Tried at the tasting room, brought two bottles home. Delicious aged brown ale - a sweetness (from the port barrels?) mixes nicely with just a bit of hops - like this better than many of the bourbon-barrel stouts I've sampled, more "beer-like" and possible to drink with a hearty meal rather than just on its own.

The beer offers sweet brown sugar, caramel, lots of barrel character up front with some alcohol, sweet red wine/port flavors, but then the beer falls away from the alcohol towards the finish. A medium mouthfeel on this beer.

Imperial Maple Brown Ale Aged in Tawny Port Barrels
Look. Poured into a snifter light brown head about 1 inch thick.
Smell. The first thing you smell is the tawny port and oak coming off the head. I detect some roast coming through with slight tingles of alcohol.
Taste. On first sip the malt is there but not to thick as it mingles with the maple syrup and tawny port barrel effects. Smooth and a touch creamy with alcohol warmth at the end.
Feel. Feels like the perfect imperial to be served with dark chocolates, grilled portabellas or a nice cigar. A comfortable feel that slowly warms the throat and stomach.
Overall. this is a excellent ale for sipping when the work week is done. At 9.2 ABV the alcohol warmth blends perfectly no blast or nose burning. The maple is present but not syrupy sweet. the label states will cellar well and I,m going back to get one more to do just that.
