Poured from a bomber into a shaker pint, the beer is a vivid, clear, mahogany-brown coloring with a chunky, frothy, dense, off-white head of a solid inch and a half sitting on top. Aromas of peat and smoke, nut sweetness, coffee, and maple. Very rich, blended nose. Flavors are roasted and woody on the forward tongue, very robust. Nut sweetness is subtle, but present in the backbone. Tangy and smoky throughout, with a bitter and coffee-like aftertaste. Light and crisp in mouth, with a solid amount of carbonation making the brew very drinkable. Crisp, effervescent finish with a slightly smoked linger. Decent Brown, with bold characteristics and a subtle kick from the ABV.

From the 22 fl. oz. bomber. Sampled on June 29, 2013

It pours an incredibly heady medium amber to mahogany brown. The head is a bit much but it may simple be due to the speed at which I poured it. My bad. Unfiltered brew but excellent clarity.

The aroma is mild and subtle with nutty malts, maple syrup, and a kind of vanilla ester as well as a vague hop note deep within. The sweetness is at the front.

The body is medium but there is a kind of astringency to it that made it feel thinner.

The taste comes back with a passion with its malt forward sweetness, maple flavor, and a wonderful low to moderate dry bitterness that lingers at the finale. Really nice.

A - Very dark brown, almost black, with a big off white/tan head. Excellent lacing.

S - Lots of caramel, maybe the maple syrup contributes to that? Some Getting a bit of DMS.

T - Caramel, toffee, burnt toast, malty sweetness. Hops are present only as bitterness and some spiciness.

M - Very smooth, medium body, medium carbonation. Lingers on the palate.

O - A nice American Brown Ale. I really like the use of local maple syrup and hops. I'd like to try others from Foley Brothers.

From a recent VT hike/beer tour haul. Runaway abbey style foam gush head over a clear chestnut colored beer. Smells like maple syrup and some wet Green Mountain earthiness. Maple and brown sugar dominate my palette and leave little room of anything else. The caramel/brown sugar/maple combo somewhat reminds me of of Sapling bourbon, another VT maple product.

No brown ale depth behind the maple sweetness is my biggest complaint. Meh.

22oz bottle purchased as a single from somewhere in the Middlebury/Burlington area.

Poured into an imperial pint glass, formed a 1 1/2" tan head over the clear brown brew. Head falls slowly, with coating lace. Aroma is malty.

Taste starts with dark malt sweetness, a touch of root beer or maybe licorice, then balancing bitter through the close. Slightly chalky aftertaste. Mouthfeel is smooth, with drinkability is great. Oh, I'm liking this one...

Picked up on my last trip up to VT.

Big fluffy fizzy possibly over carbonated 2.5 finger head that fades slowly with lots of sticky lacing, over super dark molasses brown color beer with faint hints of mahogany light sneaking through.

Nose has a light yeasty start, but that fade quickly. under that is a light maple aroma, toasty brown malts, an earthy herbal aroma that is either from the maple or a bit of herbal hops, creamy brown malts with light nutty and caramel aromas.

Taste starts with some toasty brown malts, nutty caramel and hint of toffee, which then goes to maple flavors with very light sweetness. Again that earthy herbal flavors with a decent spicy bitterness, chewy and herbal little spicy, and faint earthiness from the maple too. A light creamy mocha too, and a faint yeasty twang. Finish its drier but sticky, lingering mocha, caramel, toasty nutty malts, light earthy herbal hops and very light maple.

Mouth is med bodied, fluffy carb, sticky too.

Overall ok but not anything special at all. Yeast seems to have taken its own path, hops are a bit much for a maple nut brown, and I would have liked more maple myself. However, the malts are nice and its an overall fairly decent beer.

Foley Brothers Brewing - Native Brown Ale - 1pt 6fl oz bottle

Look - Pours dark brown with a glorious foamy head. Excellent lacing. Unfiltered, even when fresh (not expired) and poured gently, some sediment is present in the mixture. Not that I mind but it is an element of appearance.

Smell - Honey, maple, and malt are all present. Molasses as well. Impressive aroma for a brown ale.

Taste - Bitey malt followed by an ever-so-slight twinge of hops, then sweet maple galore.

Mouthfeel - Very sweet brew. Great at what it does for sure. Malt rests vigorously on the palette. Alcohol is perfectly concealed. My biggest concern here is how sweet it is, because it is VERY sweet.

Overall - Not bad, but not really my bag. Well-done overall, but very, VERY sweet. Unique nonetheless, and I appreciate that. If you are a fan of a sweet brown ale, this is for you.

Pours a mild brown with amber overtones and a thin head into my glass. I had purchased a second bottle of this before realizing that this bottle was still in the fridge.

Sweet with caramel, a smidgen of cocoa and brown sugar. Nothing complicated here. No additions. No illusions. A brown ale as intended.

Robust, hearty with brown sugar and molasses that come to the mind.

Carbonation level is perfect and it leaves a soft imprint on the palate consisting of molasses, cocoa, etc.

I like this. No gimmicks. Just a straight-forward brown ale. Recommended.
