Notes/Commercial Description:
Don't let the Slingshot's color fool you, it has a light body and smooth complexities that will remind you to never judge a book by its cover. Or, more likely, it'll just remind you that beer is a pretty darn good thing.

Poured a nice clean Mahagony color with a mild head.

The smell was dominated toasted caramel malts and a hint of bready munich.

The flavor was pretty nice, a big toasted bready malt flavors balanced out quite well with a touch of spicy hops. I love the flavor of munich malt and this seems to have plenty.

The mouthfeel has a medium thickness with a light dry finish.

Easily the best offering from old man river. A nice tasty sessionable malty lager, something of a rarity these days.

On tap @ Hideaway in Chaseburg WI. Review from notes.

Tap handle said Einfach Dunkel, which was traced to Old Man thanks to Google and Mike @ Toppling Goliath. Einfach = "unpretentious simplicity" gotta love that.

Nutty amber brown, collar of lacing, wispy skim, slow moving visible carbonation.

Sweet estery aroma, apples and nutty toasted malts.
Flavor is similarly sweet, nutty (almond or walnut), with a mild dry bitter aftertaste. Mild and easygoing, light bodied. A pint or three would be easy to session. This was good stuff, it's not everyday you get to try a Dunkel from Iowa.

12 oz bottle poured into a pilsner glass.
5.3% ABV

A - Slingshot pours a deep copper in color with excellent clarity below the well-formed ivory head. Sticky clumps of lace clutch the glass with fortitude for one inviting-looking beer!

S - Munich malty sweetness gives Slingshot a wonderful aroma of fresh-from-the-oven nut bread thickly sliced and drizzled with a dribble of toffee.

T - Nuttier than the nose suggests, the thick, dense bread flavor carries over with more malt heft and sweetness dusted with just a hint of cocoa before finishing quite cleanly.

M - Crisp and lighter in bodied than expected for it's color, Slingshot is smooth and easily drinkable with just the slightest lingering sweetness on the tongue.

O - Munich Dunkel might not be the most popular style in the craft beer world but this German-style brewer has nailed the classic dark German lager with Slingshot. Nutty, bread-like maltiness never becomes too sweet or aggressive, just finishing cleanly for a really tasty, easy drinking beer!

Poured from the bottle into a pilsner style glass.

A cloudy chestnut amber body, kind of motionless a bit with some fast rising carbonation that's hard to see, and a bit of yeast chunk at the bottom. Head forms large on the pour but in control with a foamy three finger tan top and soapy retention.

Nice solid, nose if a bit grainy. Clove like spices and some sticky smelling yeast. Hints of peanut strangely which seems a bit off putting.

Palate is a bit surprising, with a little bit of a light body. Interesting fruity estery tones on this similar to grape and cherry. Hinted crispness that falls a little flat with a mineral water action. Hop herbality seems very unoticeable in this, but drinks well and quite easy. Much more caramel like warmth comes out as the beer warms.

Overall not too bad for a dunkel

A- light, much too light for a dunkle. Barely too dark for a helles. Almost no head.
S/m almost no scent. Straining to find one....I guess I would say malt extract. Flavor is rather bland. No big Munich malt notes at all. None. It is smooth though.
M watery, but smooth. No crispness, just a fading away
O No glaring flaws, but no discernible character either. Honestly, it reminds me of an extract homebrew. If my buddy had home brewed this, I would drink it. I would however not pay for it.

A - Fairly light for the style. Crisp amber with a small to medium sized head. Smooth, tight, creamy, white head. Average retention with little to no lace.

S - Sweet caramel malt with some sweet, dark bread. Caramel, toffee and hints of dark fruit. Toasted malt and touches of orchard fruit.

T - Similar to the nose. Lots of sweet dark bread, moderate amount of caramel and toffee. Fair amount of apple, pear, hints of dark cherry. A good amount of fruity esters in this beer that come in and out from that sweet, dark bread. Touches of herbal, floral, and grassy hops but they are definitely secondary.

M - Great medium body with average carbonation. Smooth, creamy, and full feeling which fits the style wonderfully.

D - Easy to drink Dunkel. Wonderful smooth body that goes down very easy. Nice flavors and it is sweet but not cloying.

Notes: Quite a nice example for the style. Wonderful body, and a nice flavor (not outstanding though). Great malt body and although it is sweet, it isn't cloying or sticky or too sweet. Nice hints of hops. Esters are also nice and not overpowering (thankfully).
