Brawley's - Charlotte

TakeTake is peach colored with enough haze to make seeing through the body impossible. The white head has a slight yellow tint and easily rises to three fingers on the pour. Settling, it rests at a finger in height with great creaminess and lacing that coats the glass like super glue. It will be tough getting that foam off.

Notes of bubblegum and faint clove are the first noticeable components of the nose. The New Zealand hopping and brett are noticeable in the middle. Brett comes across with soft straw and wildflower notes while the hop profile is all over the place, in a good way. Pineapple and mango are both vibrant. Herbal greenness runs the periphery. There even seems to be a touch of banana. Each time I stick my nose in the glass the aromas change, but those listed are most prevalent. The malt is mostly sugar cookie with some graham cracker creeping in.

The flavor profile is much the same as the nose but the tropical notes are less vibrant. The malt base is all sugar cookie in the flavor and the hop profile adds a ton of fruitiness. Peppery mango, pineapple, papaya in small doses, and other unspecific fruitiness have their fingerprints all over this saison. The addition of brett adds a soft mustiness to the abundant fruit. This is a damn tasty libation. The saison shines briefly on the finish with green apple and peach notes. Damn good beer!

The body lies squarely in the middle of the spectrum, weight wise, with a great velvety feel. Carbonation is lively, yet soft, working the beer through fairly quickly. The finish is semi-dry and bitterness is there but low. Drinkability is off the charts.

TakeTake is one of the better Wicked Weed beers I have had. The base saison is very good and a perfect canvas for the showcase of New Zealand hops. The tropical fruits are bright, the brett adds just enough must, if refreshing and highly drinkable. What more could you ask for in a beer? I would drink this again, that's for sure.

Poured into a Saint Somewhere wine-style glass. No freshness date.

A- Pours a hazy medium amber color with a 1/2 inch off-white head that retains a bit before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a side patch of bubbly surface foam.

S- One of the most unique aromas I've ever put my nose to. The earthy New Zealand hops combine with the funk of the Brett to make this incredibly musty, dank, borderline rubbery aroma. Lots of green olive too.

T- And, unlike some other Wicked Weed beers, the flavor actually lives up to the aroma. The grassy, herbal hops play off the semi-astringent Brett taste. Notes of green olive and grapefruit. Tangy, zesty, juicy. Just awesome. The alcohol is also superbly hidden. Resilient sheet of sudsy lacing.

M- Very sharp and vibrant from the hops and perhaps the yeast. Medium carbonation and a lightish body.

O- This is my new favorite Wicked Weed beer and full-on proof that they're not just a flash-in-the-pan brewery that's only driven by hype. I've had beers that have used Brett in conjunction with hops brilliantly, but the New Zealand varietals they picked for this bring a totally new aspect to the table. Bravo. Now if only I could figure out how to pronounce the name of this beer...

No bottling date, simply says "Bottled in 2014"

A: Pours a very, very cloudy pale orange. Very large, effervescent and fizzy light tan head. Head fizzes out fairly quickly with halfway decent, soapy lacing. Decent chunky head retention too.

S: Tropical fruit and sweet oranges. Really nice citrus; a nice combination of sweet juice and bitter rind. Really nice refreshing aroma. Top notch.

T: Similar to the aroma, very tropical and orange juice-like. Has lots of earthy and black pepper character from the belgian yeast mixing in quickly, however. Mildly funky, mostly in the earthiness that becomes sort of all-encompassing. Mild bready malt followed by loads of black pepper that lingers on forever.

M: Medium bodied, smooth and spicy.

O: Nice hoppy and funky saison. Sharp flavors but well balanced surprisingly. Drinks surprisingly well....as well. Aroma is actually my favorite part - perfect smashup of tropical fruits and oranges. Really just hit me right.

Poured from 16oz bottle into Allagash flute

Nose is really hoppy, with some vinegar. Really different. Never smelled anything like that. Awesome.

Taste follows the nose, but the hops really meld with the acid. You don't get a lot of that Belgian yeast in the flavor from a normal Saison, but the bitterness from the hops really lingers. Fantastic. Its mellow, but sharp, if that makes sense.

Really enjoyed it. One of my favs from WW. Love this brewery

500mL bottle from the Wicked Weed brewpub (Asheville, NC). 9.99. No bottling date. Served in a goblet.

Pours a cloudy orange-hued hay with a frothy four fingers of white foam. The head calms to a shallow layer that laces quite well.

Smells of oranges, lemon, hay, a little musty and some vague funk.

The flavors are a complex yet refreshing blend wherein yeast, funk and citrus battle for dominance. Rinds, lemon zest, wet hay, dry yeast, marmalade and a little bit of crackery malt. The flavors come together well and make for an enjoyable, easy drinking brew.

Dry, medium body with crisp carbonation. Aftertaste of marmalade and funky hay.

Quite tasty. If I keep finding saisons that taste this good, I might start to really like this style.

A: Pours a very hazy deep golden yellow in color with light to moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising from the bottom of the glass and moderate amounts of golden apricot highlights. The beer has a three finger tall dense foamy off-white head that slowly reduces to a medium sized finger thick cap towards the center surrounded by a thick film covering the remainder of the surface of the beer and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of citrus/orange and tropical/pineapple hops over the top of pale malts and moderate to strong aroma of brett (earthy and slightly barn-like). Slightly funky.

T: Upfront there is a light to moderate flavor of pale malts with a moderate to strong flavor of brett - earthy and barn/hay-like with a moderate amount of funkiness. That is followed by moderate flavors of citrus/orange and tropical/pineapple hops which contributes a light amount of bitterness in the finish which fades quickly.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Light to moderate amounts of dryness in the finish.

O: A very enjoyable funky and hoppy saison - definitely one that I plan on grabbing again. Easy to drink and rather refreshing. Very nice mouthfeel and nice hop combination.
