On tap at the brewpub which reports 11.7% ABV and use of 3 malts (including honey malt), rye, honey, brown sugar and dextrose. Two samples, 2 days apart.

Pours are dark and opaque red-brown with a small, very durable head.

WW uses a pre-rinsed BBL to great effect on the aroma, flavor and smooth feel. Nit-picking, I note a bit more burnt flavor in the aftertaste than optimal.

O: very enjoyable; every aspect excels.

Tap at Salud NoDa. Your standard black, nice and thick appearing. Thin but frothy layer of tan head. Laces just a bit.

Aroma, roast malt, dark chocolate fudge, some vanilla, oak, bourbon.

Taste, roast malt and bourbon barrel are big and about equal throughout. Roast malt and darker less sweet chocolate. Vanilla and bourbon. Just a little anise and coffee bitterness. It all lingers very nicely.

About full body, a tad warming. Not quite creamy mouthfeel. A nice sipping after dinner or cigar beer for sure.
My favorite dark beer of theirs so far, as good as their Belgian and ipa lines.

Black with light khaki head.
Aroma : almond, caramel, very light charcoal, slight but not off-putting vegetal aroma
Taste : big baking chocolate, every chocolate flavor is represented here. Caramel and lots of fig.
Mouthfeel: full, slightly bitter, with next to zero alcohol heat
Overall : excellent beer, and a good representation of style in my opinion

@ Wicked Weed

A small tan head covers a deep black body, before fading to a few wisps on the surface. Aromas of bourbon-soaked wood, dark caramel, brown bread, figs, and raisins. Boozy and clearly barrel-aged, but it maintains the characteristics of a classic RIS, which I appreciate. Big, dark, malty flavor – sweet and boozy, but not too much of either. Cocoa, coconut, light coffee beans, and nuts. The aftertaste is the best part, bringing a tasty marshmallow note in to the fold. A little too woody through the middle for my personal tastes, but the lingering richness helps with that. Medium-full bodied. When they inevitably bottle this, I’ll buy a couple to sit in the dark for a bit, hoping for just a little more cohesiveness.

draft at beer study in chapel hill. into a FW tulip.

dark black pour with a very appropriate dark beige head. terrific looking pour. the smell is very big on bourbon and chocolate... but much more on the bourbon. the taste follows suit and is a big bourbon bomb but that is not a bad thing for me... chocolate too... abv not very apparent. big body, mild carbonation. sipper.

overall very good. each batch is aged in a different bourbon barrel too!

This was a 10 oz. pour at Wicked Weed in Asheville NC.

It pours a very dark black with a small hea that dissapates quickly. It doesn't smell nearly as strong as it tastes. Upfront I get the sweet dark malts followed by the bourbon which is really balanced well and is not overpowering. The body is big but I have had bigger and it has decent carbonation. I would highly recommend to anyone in the area.

Appearance: Near black, imposingly languid body, topped with no more than a very slim, dark tan head.

Smell: Potent fresh bourbony scent supported by heavy, malty notes of bittersweet chocolate, caramel squares, rich roast as well as fruity hints of raisin and plum.

Taste: A load of chocolate fudge, caramel and roasty (but overtly roasty) coffee beans drenched in succulent bourbon with all the oak wood, dark brown sugar and vanilla you could want. Moderate dark fruitiness. Sweetish, smooth, softly warming finish. It's bursting with vibrant flavors and character but still comes across as well balances on all fronts.

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium-light carbonation.

Overall: Wow. Is there anyone else who agrees with me that this is one of the greatest beers to come out of the Asheville area? For those of us who never gave up on the dream of another top-class barrel aged stout, it's almost hard to conceive that this could have been done any better.
