Notes/Commercial Description:
The Freak of Nature is our San Francisco inspired hoppy monster. At 8% abv and who knows how many ibu’s, this beer is our shrine to the Hop. Absurd amounts of the big West Coast hops gives this beer its citrusy, weedy nose and big, dank flavor. We dry hop with 48lbs per batch, which is over 3lbs of hops per barrel. In keeping with the classic style of the West Coast double, sugar plays a large part in creating this dry and minimally bitter double IPA. The Freak is particularly pintable for the style, so if you dare to enter, we welcome you to the Freak Show.

Consumed at brewery December 26th, 2013.

Beer is a very clear light yellow with a white one-finger head. Plenty of sheeting.

Aroma is piney and citric.

Flavor starts with bashful pale malt, then kicks in with a tsunami of piney and peppery hop flavors. A black hole of bitterness on the finish; not overdone, but goes on forever.

Slight carbonation bite. Some alcohol warmth in mouth. Otherwise, correct for style.

Serious West Coast style, done properly.

The trick to making a great "imperial" IPA is to not make an Imperial IPA at all! Sure, make an IPA, but kick it up a notch. Not so much that its residual sweetness attempts to balance the hops or that its body contradicts the IPA's supreme dryness.

This Freak of Nature kicks off with a bright golden-orange color and less haze than expected from such highly hopped ale. As a tall column of froth climbs to the rim of the glass, it retains largely with creamy texture and lacing rings within the beer's wake. Its simply a glowing ale to captivate the eye.

Bold aromatics spring forth with all-things-hops: Citrusy grapefruit, tropical pineapple and a deeply herbaceous scent that's reminiscent of chive and cannabis. Backed by a thin layer of caramel and honey, the malts simply seem to give the hop character a juicy, vibrant and ripe scent.

Equally as hop-dominant is the beer's taste, but the malts play delicately on the early palate before hand. It thin honey and caramel is bet with the terse bready sweetness of biscotti for a creamy and malty-dry upstart. Then the middle bursts with tangy, juicy fruit flavor- red grapefruit, pineapple, mango, passion fruit, apricot and lemon all converge with the semi-tart and semi-sweet fructose character before the ale develops quickly into a deeply resinous tone. The bitter taste of torn pine needles, fresh-cut grass, herbal lemongrass, chive and light cannabis dry the beer's taste with ease.

Medium bodied, the beer's early creaminess dissolves on the middle palate as the racy carbonation pulls from the malt and its sweetness dissolves. What's left is the arid hop dryness and light alcohol warmth that closes the session with firm dryness and lingering resin.

Freak of Nature isn't really any freak at all- its a beer that straddles the fence of standard American IPA and that of more imperial-ized versions. Yet, it capitalizes on the best of both worlds- the body and showcased bitterness of IPA but with the drippy goodness and focus on hop aroma and early taste of Imperial types- a "dip and duke" that works out marvelously.

5 oz pour into a tasting glass on tap at the Wicked Weed taproom.

L – Medium amber color with a 1-finger creamy, cream-colored head. Nice retention and some patches of lacing. Clear with a good amount of bubbles.

S – Tons of hops with grapefruit, orange, and mango notes. There may be some bready malt here, too, but this is loaded with hops.

T – Just like the aroma, the taste is filled with bitter grapefruit, orange, and mango hops. That bready, caramel malt shows up for a second at the beginning and is quickly overshadowed by the bitter blast of hops. Really tasty.

F – Medium-to-full-bodied, good carbonation, a sticky and chewy mouthfeel, and a very bitter and dry finish. Grapefruit and mango hop bitterness lingers and pairs well with the mild throat-warmth from the alcohol.

O – This is a really tasty DIPA. It is loaded with hops that shine through in the aroma and the taste, and the mouthfeel is great. For a beer this big with an ABV like 8%, it is crazy drinkable, too. Really nice beer from Wicked Weed.

Resiny, piney, grapefruit pith, with a fairly bitter finish. The bready malt backbone stands up well. Onion is a bit strong for my palate, but I think they have the bittering hops and malt balance nailed.

After bringing a 32oz bottle back to the house, I noticed it was cloudy. Also, a bit rainy. I sat down, cracked open the bottle and filled up a glass. I let the beer sit for a minute or two. After the first sip, a stiff North West wind was felt. Another sip, and I noticed the clouds began to break and the rain stopped.

All is right now. I give credit to this beer. Well done Wicked Weed. A DIPA that goes down like a Session IPA. But you know, with some balls.

Pours a clear light golden with a thinner but quite sticky bone white head atop, grapefruit and fresh mown grass in the nose with a tinge of sweet onion, some alcohol sweetness as well.Sweet onion and pithy grapefruit flavors really hit ya at the onset, big almost raw-like hops just juicy and great, some sugary sweetness along with that lingering alcohol as well.A DIPA that's not as sweet and sugary as alot of them and the hops are large and in charge,a great DIPA here.

On tap at the brewpub in Asheville.
Pours clear with a light amber body and a very good head. Nice lacing.

This DIPA has a load of fruity hops in the nose. Pungent aroma.
Flavor: fruity but herbal and slightly dank hops dominate. Mild bitterness for style.
