Cherry pie! Cherry pie! Cherry pie! This light and fruity ale is black in color, though your palate would never know it. Black Angel is fermented on the Wicked Wild yeast and then moved into stripped down Four Roses bourbon barrels and aged on tart cherries, sweet cherries, and Italian plums. The white oak and roast malt add notes of vanilla and graham cracker that, when blended with the tart sweetness of the fruit, bring out a robust cherry pie flavor.

500ml bottle thanks to Steve. Dark brown/ruby pour with a light beige head. Aroma comes across like a tradional Flnders, while the tase introduces some kriek notes. Dark malts with a hint of chcolate add to the overall.

Had this beer on draft at the Wicked Weed gastropub in Asheville, enjoyed while watching the Stanley Cup finals - the game the Canadians won! Poured into a small tulip glass. Deep, dark purple color with little head or lacing, but none really expected. Smell and taste of dark sour grapes and cherries. Pleasantly tart and funky. Great beer for hockey watching!

Poured a black body with minimal head and almost no lace. Aroma has notes of wood and booze (or something like plum wine) but mainly a whole bunch of tart cherries. I found the beer to be smooth and the tart, acidic cherries are strong and provide a sharp zip on the tongue including the sharp finish. The beer is billed as "cherry pie" and I guess I get a smidge of sweetness and breadiness, but mainly this seems like a sour beer with some minor cherry sweetness tucked underneath.

2014 vintage. Poured from a tall bottle into a Dogfish Head tulip

L: Dark, dark brown pour... nearly black with some burgundy/plum highlights as it hits the light. Fizzy off-white head falls fast. Thin ring of lacing.

S: Fruit and vinegar. Tart... plum and baking cherry.

T.F: Tart and fruity. Apple cider vinegar, cherry pie, vanilla, and plum. Lemon rind and oak. Not much booze/bourbon... and it takes more of the wood than the spirit. Mild to moderate acidity... well carbonated and smooth. More tart fruit to finish.

O: A tasty fruity/funky sour from Wicked Weed. Picking up mostly vanilla and oak from the barrel but not much bourbon. Drinkable... would definitely have it again.

Had on draft at Wicked Week Funkatorium, Asheville, N.C., Nov. 15, 2020. Interesting production, though would have liked to have had more of the barrel aging taste profile come through. Yet still something would have again.

Pours cola brown with a plum hue. Fat finger of light khaki head that dissipates fairly quickly into a wisp and thick crown. Sheets of lacing slide fairly quickly back into the glass.

Vinegar dominates the nose, along with some red wine, wood and maybe a little cherry. Smells sort of like a Flanders red.

Taste follows closely. Tart and vinegary, with some oak, a hint of vanilla and clear vinous qualities, as well as a nice sour cherry addition on the backend.

Relatively slick mouthfeel with a burst of strong carbonation upon swallowing.

This is a puckering beer with nice tart flavors. A lot of the Funkatorium beers seem a little thin or unidimensional to me. This doesn’t totally buck that trend, but does have enough going on to keep things interesting.
