Wicked Weed is one impressive operation and probably the most interesting beer coming out of Asheville (or even all of NC) right now. Taking a cue from Dogfish Head and others they really swerve at times and create some unique brews that you won't get anywhere else in the area.

Large outdoor area leads into a long hallway, roughly twelve tabs at the expansive bar and lots of long Old-Europe style tables and booths line the front. Place was packed while I was there, there is an open kitchen in the back. Down the stairs is their private brew-house room that has even more unique beer and some pretzels. That's for the true die-hards as that's where the rare stuff is.

I had an IPA, a super light wheat and their Peach Ale. All very nice, the Peach in particular was suprisingly good, no food but it looked solid and Asheville has great food all around so I'm sure it stood up.

Service? The one drawback of this place, and other reviews have mentioned it, is that it's really the only beer place in Asheville where you will get some douche attitude from the staff. A fellow patron of mine was new to craft beer and had some basic questions and was treated with a roll of the eyes and some surliness from the otherwise nice bartender. Didn't really think that was called for.

Anyway, this place is well worth a stop, it gets crowded so come at off times. Probably the best beer in town. By the way, make sure to stop by and see a show at the Orange Peel next door, one of the best rock clubs in the country.

My favorite beer place in the world. I miss Asheville and this beer especially.

Wicked Weed is new, and big, and packed... My first stop in Asheville. I walked in around 5:30-6 and the restaurant upstairs was already slam packed and it's a giant space. I didn't do much looking around and just headed straight downstairs to the bar since I didn't plan to eat there anyway. The bar downstairs looks over the brewing equipment and seats about 12 with hightops loaded in and jammed to the gills. At 6 people were already standing around. A huge, walkout patio area is also available with picnic tables and standing bars, also packed.

The chalkboard is huge, taking up the entire wall behind the bar, it would have to be huge with all the taps available. 25 taps, I believe...Maybe even 30 but they ran the gamut from Belgian styles to IPAs to the Funkatorium options. Everything I sampled was good, some better than others, a few pretty out there and experimental, which are always fun to try. Short pours were offered. Even though the bar staff was swamped they stayed on their game. Good stuff, probably the best beer overall in Asheville.

The clientele was a different matter. Everyone seemed to be trying to be someone they weren't. The pretension oozed from nearly every person in the bar. Hipsters and want to be hipsters have taken over Wicked Weed, mostly the latter. It was just odd. Like I said, the beer was definitely good, the staff quick and knowledgeable, the clientele I could do without. With that said, they probably didn't like me either.

I've been underwhelmed by the WW beers I've found in Raleigh. I think they get too much home state love. The IPAs tend to be much better than the sours. So I wondered what to expect from a visit. But I was pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere is top shelf! Both upstairs and downstairs are as good as it gets. And the service is great and the prices are amazingly low. The food is outstanding too. Surprisingly, the beer was the weakest part. I really loved the Mosaic Saison and Lusus Naturae. They were world class. There were a few others I really enjoyed but most left me a little short. They seemed very modeled after Russian River in every way but I found them a little lacking. But it's my favorite NC brewery, just ahead of Olde Hickory, so I look forward to their continued growth and refinement.

Great food, great beer, great atmosphere. The only thing that keeps me from giving it a 5 is the line that is usually there. Good for WW for having a great product, but I am not a huge fan of waiting in lines. I am excited about their expansion into bottling, and the funkatorium. This will hopefully improve the herds of people at the brewery.

Love this place. Always busy, but worth checking out if you're in the area.
