One Down, a robust cherrywood smoked porter, was brewed in celebration of the brewery's first anniversary. This porter pours midnight-black and has a complex and assertive profile consisting of roasty coffee and dark chocolate characteristics, a complementing bitterness, and a distinct, yet subtle, earthy smokey finish. The cherrywood smoked malts lend just a hint of cherrywood flavor, which gives way to just a touch of caramel-like sweetness that serves to balance out the flavor profile. This beer is full-bodied and is robust in more ways than one as it clocks in at a 7.75% ABV.

From the 16 oz. can dated 11/15/19. Sampled on Jan 2, 2020.

Attractive looking dark brown color beneath a long lasting tan head.

The aroma is roasted dark chocolate malts and a hint of the smoked malts it was brewed with. A floral or earthy hop character.

Medium, smooth mouthfeel.

Sweet dark and chocolate malts in the taste with a bigger than expected earthy hop bitterness that lingers shortly at the end.

Pours a brown-black with slight cap of head and a bit of lacing. Faint malt aroma. Taste most coffee, some faint chocolate. Very well balanced and bodied.

*Filled my growler on 11/8/15. The brewery had this beer at 8.5% abv*

Looks like how you'd expect a porter or stout to look. Typical kind of red tint towards the bottom of the glass. Big 2/3 finger tan colored head died to a 1 finger head with lots of staying power. Decent lacing. Looks inviting.

S-Roasted malt character. Medium roasted coffee and dark chocolate. Some dark fruits are present, although hard to tell which ones I'm picking up. Maybe even faint strawberry if I swirl the glass. Maybe some vanilla too. Some of the alcohol is present, but not much. It's a decent scent.

T- A little on the flat side, but the growler top did pop 2 days after being opened. The initial taste is of roasted/lighted charred malts and chocolate. A bit of alcohol astringency is present at 8.5% on their current version of the beer. I'm still getting this strawberry mix with dark fruits thing. The strawberry is noticeable, but light. Kind of earthy on the bitterness. Not an extremely hoppy beer, but there is a defined bitternes that's tough to put in words. Finishes on the sweet side with a bit of sourness.

M- Mouthfeel is on the high side of medium. You can totally taste the 8.5% that this is brewed at right now at the time of this review. If imperial porter is a style, this would be it. It would be great after the Thanksgiving meal or in the early winter for sure.

Overall this is a very interesting and very warming-feeling porter. I'd recommend it to imperial stout lovers, dark beer guys and gals, or anyone that apprecaties well crafted beers. Get to BOG IRON!

Poured 11/5/15 from a 500ml swing-top growler that was filled at the brewery on 11/4/2015, into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep dark brown color, with a thin beige head that fades quickly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains coffee, chocolate, smoked malts and a faint touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out a little creamy with flavors of coffee and chocolate that are quickly followed by a decent smokiness and a hearty roasted malt character. There is also some dark fruit in the background. The hops presence is mild but provides a good balance. The after-taste is slightly bready and slightly smoky.

M: Smooth and crisp, medium body, light-to-medium carbonation, finish is clean.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, good kick, good representation of style, this is a solid porter to drink for a long time.

Was pretty surprised when i saw this at a local bar on tap knowing it comes from a relatively small local brewery. Good chocholate notes and also some smoke going on. Overall was very impressed will look for others from Bog Iron.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a nice dark brown almost black hue with a thin mocha head that fades to leave a thin blanket and light wisps.

S - Aromas of nice smoke, cherry wood, chocolate, nice malts. Solid porter background, good smoke really pleasant.

T - Taste is chocolate cherries thanks to the smoke , nice caramel, good chocolate, nice smoke, good vanilla nice.

Three pours into a Bog Iron pint glass.

Pours dark chocolate black with little head. Mouthfeel is on the creamy side and carbonation is relatively light. I did not get much in the way of smoky flavors from this one, aside from the expected roasty notes and bitter chocolate you'd get in a nice stout. More dry than sweet. Alcohol is imperceptible for such a boozy beer. Did not catch much on the nose.

All in all, "merely" a very good, thick and full-bodied stout. I feel like Bog Iron's selections have trended towards the hoppy, so if you want to support the local guys but aren't a fan of those brews, this is a good excuse to hop (heh) on the bandwagon.

And congrats to B.I. on their success. The renovations to the taproom look awesome.

Growler filled yesterday, this was pretty interesting when I sampled it, so hopefully it transferred through the growler in a full pour.

Pours a slight mocha colored fluffy head with big bubbles as well from the chugging pour, hits about 1/2 a finger and fades at a med pace with the big bubbles popping, and leaves a nice sticky lacing. The beer is pretty much pitch black, no light getting through at all.

Nose brings a nice smoke, a very nice cherrywood smoke, smooth and mellow smoke with a hint of that nice cherrywood and mild toasted bark like, just a hint of campfire smoke. Under that is a nice porter, robust, with a bit of a roasty malt, a little caramel and just a touch of a coffee like note from the roast, a hint of a charred black malt, as well as a little bit of a chocolatey note like a cocoa dust.

Taste again starts right off with the smoke, a nice mild campfire smoke, and smoldering log, with a bit of that nice cherrywood character, little ash note. then quickly into the dark malts again, little charred black malt, with a bit of a roasty character and hint of burnt coffee. Then flashes of cocoa dust come through again, and a little creamy melted baker's chocolate. A mild caramel note in the center as well, and a bit of an almost cherrywood like sap character interestingly. Mild bitterness more from the roasted malts I think than the hops. Finish is a bit sticky and still a bit sweet, maybe a bit drier finish would have been a nice touch, also a bit more cocoa and caramel on the finish, long lingering mild smoke.

Mouth is on the full bodied side, a bit creamy even, almost chewy even, just a bit light on the carbonation but it is a growler. No real booze either which is hidden well for almost 8%.

Overall pretty nice, I really like how the smoke comes through, nice smoke character without being acrid or overpowering, or just nasty in general, a nice mild smoke that still prettty much dominates, with nice flashes of roast, coffee, and chocolate underneath, and I swear I even get a bit of the cherrywood notes in there (huopefully that's not my brain messing with me). The only real drawbacks are the lack of carbonatino which is excusable due to growler fillage, and the finish could have been a bit drier and less sticky, but still quite nice and drinkable for how big it is.
