Thoroughly enjoyed form the 22 oz bottle in a snifter. This FINE black IPA pours a dark black with some mahogany highlights. The head is fantastic and settles to a thick beaded/big bubbled ring and pooling layer with soapy clinging lacing. Nose of bakers cocoa, subtle coffee, sticky hops, and a touch of citrus. Flavors are the best I have had in the style thus far with deeply roasted malts and bitter sticky hops melding together with coffee and cocoa flavors in the middle, then finishing with a piney citrus note on the back with a slight licorice flavor that is pleasant. Smooth and on the verge of a creamy mouth feel that is nicely carbonated and lively finishing moderately dry.
Another fantastic brew from the Wooster Ohio trip recently. Excellent.
Cheers

Beer #8 8/9/13
This beer, GBS's newest, is their take on one of craft beer's biggest trends right now, and it definitely is black. A big, monstrously creamy and frothy tan head rests at well over a finger for the full session and sticks almost in sheets on the glass.
This beer has big notes of piney hops and roast, mingling very well together while each part manages to remain distinct. It's also the biggest beer they've brewed to this point, and I'm honestly impressed with what they've done here. The bitterness and the roast are both very big, while neither overshadows the other. The malts don't go too tangy or acerbic, and the balance is very good for the size. Some citrus does come out with a zesty note in the middle.
The medium body holds a big crispness more than anything, giving it life and a bit of bite the whole way through.
This is very much the best beer Great Black Swamp has done. Having had their Bullfrog stout over coffee just before, it was easy to note how the tangy and acidic notes in the stout detracted from it, while this beer didn't seem to have any of those flaws. I think they're coming along.
