Poured deep amber, with very little head, into a goblet. Appearance is of a deep amber. The aroma is comprised of equal parts malt and spices. Tastes of sweetly subtle spices mixed with malt; both overpower any obvious taste of hops. This beer is pleasantly and appropriately bitter, however, without the bitterness ever calling attention to itself. For a pumpkin ale, however, the pumpkin taste is either curiously subtle or, perhaps, very well balanced with the spices. After waiting several moments, though, the pumpkin taste arises as a pleasant aftertaste. The mouthfeel is reasonably light and would lend itself to drinking several more bottles in one session.
The verdict- to fully appreciate the somewhat complex (although not terribly subtle, and this is a good thing) flavor profile, this beer must be imbibed slowly and with attention paid to its full range of flavors. Not everyone will like this beer but, for such a style, this is to be expected. It's best niche, I think, is for drinkers who are new to spiced beer and want something that tastes more familiar than Old Fezziwig.
