I am not a huge fan of the Blue Moon beers that I've had, but as I explained in my last two reviews, a friend of mine (alas, not a beer guy) brought over a whole goddam twelve pack of Blue Moon products the other night and we had several left over. So, I decided I should review them. This is #3 of 3 from the Blue Moon "seasonal collection."
Apparently, this is the first review in BA of the Blue Moon Summer Honey Wheat beer. According to the label it won the 2010 GABF Gold Medal in the Specialty Honey Beer category, whatever that is. To me, it's just another pale wheat ale. I think this may have been called Honey Moon Summer Ale in the past, but Coor's has apparently decided to change names.
Pours a golden straw color with a decent two-finger bright white head. The nose is actually okay. I expected something over-spiced and over the top, but it was mild with slight citrus notes and a faint sweet honey scent. The taste is okay too. I'm not a huge fan of honey wheat beers, but this really isn't all that bad. The honey flavor is subtle, but there is a funky aftertaste that doesn't really sit too well with me. It's not great, to be sure, but it's not offensive. Mouthfeel is acceptable, more so than the Blue Moon witbier.
A passable effort from Coors. I give it straight 3s across the board because it's an average beer. No better, no worse, in my opinion.

Poured from bottle into glass. Appearance is a strong wheat color. Smell is poor with the wheat and honey coming through. The taste is fairly bland with the honey and wheat shining through. The mouthfeel though is incredibly smooth though. Very good summer beer, especially for the price this can be picked up for. Compare to Leinenkugel's Honey Weiss. Good summer beer overall.
