"Our Valencia Grove Amber is crafted with roasted malts, Valencia orange peel, and a touch of wheat for an uplifting orange, caramel aroma. It's the perfect inspiration for taking advantage of the season." Brewed in the style of an American Amber ale. First released in Spring 2013, this is the newest Blue Moon spring seasonal. Available in both 6 packs and the 12 pack mixed variety.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to a Blue Moon pint glass. Served north of 51º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a sudsy golden-white head over a mildly hazy orange body with substantial busy carbonation in tow. Retention is below average, surface cover is shallow and there is no lacing. While many of these visual flaws aren't surprising across the Blue Moon line, they set the appeal that this beer has apart from more heady and robust Amber ales. 2.5

(Smell) Pale, clean malts base with a pinch of mild bready amber malt depth. Moderate levels of herbal and citrusy hops and a semi-potent orange profile, probably Valencia if I had to venture a guess. The orange is a bit rind-like despite a mellow tartness, but focal in the build of the aroma, which is overall simple but approachable. Potency is medium at best. 3.5

(Taste) Moderate breaded malt profile reminiscent of German styles (Munich) with a pinch of lightly toasted caramel grain and a light syrupy toffee sweet finish. Where'd the orange go? It's almost completely gone past the nose, if anything remains it's a pinch of orange juice that contributes nothing aside from sugar into the forward malt body. Hops are also subdued in flavor, bitterness does a decent job at rounding out the flavor, yet it's still settled on the sweet side- not by a bothersome margin. As anticipated, drinkability is very high and few off-flavors are discernible, which is amongst some of the highest praise I can give to this beer. 3.25

(Mouthfeel) Malt profile is slick from some light syrup and a touch chewy from the biscuity and bready malt profile, carbonation adds a bit of fluff but no significant creaminess, keeping the body slick and feeling thick. Body is just shy of medium for the style, medium overall. Balance is slightly sweet but you wouldn't be able to easily tell. Drinkability is naturally high. It's not a bad texture, although a more busy carbonation wouldn't kill this beer. 3.25

(Overall) Blue Moon seems to continue putting out styles that have me guessing at other styles. I found the malt-forward, German-oriented grain choices indicative of a mild, drinkable bock beer, very clean and smooth drinking with a light enough body to be a good session choice. As usual, I'm pleased with the malt side of this beer despite an elevated sweetness and underwhelmed by just about everything else. The namesake Valencia never really came into its own and the hop profile, while offering some decent bitterness and balance, doesn't contribute any flavor depth either. If you can fight past these wasted chances for increased flavor and depth, you may find something to enjoy in this beer. 3.25
