Took a flyer on this as part of a mixed sixer... BBD 17 Mar 14

Pours an effervescent copper/orange with a thumb of cream colored head. Average head retention & lacing

S: Grassyness, green apple peels

T: Follows the nose, some caramel as well up front & pears as well. More pears & a bit of caramel & white pepper as this warms & some jolly rancher green apple, & dryness. Finishes dry, a sweet with more jolly rancher

MF: Medium bodied, firm carbonation, overly firm. Skews too sweet for the style

A flawed attempt at the style, but drinks pretty easy despite that. This would still be the best beer available for the most part around here for at least ten miles, sigh...

16C - Saison

Aroma 7/12
Immediately hit with a strong candy strawberry aroma. As it warms it gives way to a strawberry wheat aroma. There are no hints of hops whatsoever.

Appearance 3/3
Amber red. Clear. The ocassional bubble rising to the surface. Big frothy off-white head with excellent retention. Very slight stick to the sides that quickly washes away. Excellent head retention.

Flavor 12/20
Clean watery profile and sweet strawberries with a light tartness all immediately hit. Slight hop bitterness and a sweet-tart strawberry lingers for a short while. As it warms the taste is first sweet strawberries and a touch of wheat followed immediately by an almost overpowering pepper flavor with a strong tart strawberry finish. There is just the tiniest hint of some kind of light hop bitterness. The aftertaste is overwhelmingly pepper that burns the tongue. This gives way to a strong tart strawberry with a lingering light candied strawberry.

Mouthfeel 3/5
Dry finish. Light body. Medium-high carbonation. The pepper burns the tongue making the mouth pucker instead of making for the expected refreshing finish.

Overall Impression 4/10
Lowering the amount of pepper would make this far more palatable. If there are any other characteristics than pepper and strawberry, they are lost. The additional light spices, citrus notes, and malt profile are entirely absent from this style.

Poured from a bottle with a best by date of 5/19/14; into a pint glass.
Appearance - sunset orange, lots of carbonation, thin, white head. Lacing is poor.
Smell - a blend of sweet and sour.
Taste - light and tart. A bit refreshing, but not something I'd want to have more than one of.
Feel - the sweet, tart and light feel is not something I seek out.
Overall - nice price point, but nothing else entices me about this beer.
