Poured into a tulip pint and consumed 11 Nov. 2014.
(Thanks to all the veterans out there!)

Look- Nice golden color, two finger head gradually dissipates until a thin layer of foam covers the surface. Stays like that for the duration. No lacing.

Smell- Some resin, pine, and malt in the background. Fades out pretty quickly.

Taste- Hops are there, but hardly dominant like you get to expect from an IPA. Malts more present in taste than in the nose. Strong bitter finish.

Feel- Nice A softness to it. Carbonation kicks in and a long bitter finish ensues.

Overall- An enjoyable drink, but not one that'll satisfy a real hophead.

An OK gateway IPA. Nothing special. Mild and safe.

This is Conquest's first batch of Sacred Heart (they will be making slight changes for the next batch).

Growler fill at Green's Piney Grove, poured into a Conquest Brewing Tulip-Pint glass.

A: Pours plenty of fluffy off-white head, which sticks around for a while. The head eventually settles to a decent ring on top of the beer. This beer is deeply golden coloured, with a bit of haziness.

S: A bit of grain, with a prominent tropical fruit scent (mango, maybe a bit of pineapple).

T: Bitter up front, with a pine quality from the hops; this is followed by a deep malt backbone that is grainy but not overly sweet. The tropical fruitiness from the aroma is here in the taste as well. This avoids the strongly citrus-y and bitter hop profile of a "West Coast" IPA, focusing instead on a strong malt backbone and lightly sweet, tropical hop notes. I've honestly not had an IPA that tastes quite like this. It hits all the right notes, but in its own peculiar way.

M: Proper carbonation for the style, with a pretty full body and a bit of creaminess. Feels great from start to finish. Mouthfeel is important to me, and I couldn't be happier here.

O: At over 7% ABV, and with a prominent malt backbone, this beer pushes toward a IIPA categorization. However, it doesn't go over-the-top with the hops, as is typical of that style. This is a balanced, full-bodied, unique IPA. Cheers to Columbia, SC's new production brewery!

Bottled 8/6. Love the label artwork, unfortunately the beer not so much. Not horrible by any means, not even unenjoyable, just nothing l feel like I'll need to revisit in the future. Hops a bit muted for the types of ipas that I love, a bit more in the style of an English style ipa. However, at 3.99 for a 22 Oz bomber, it was well worth the try.

A - On the pour, Sacred Heart looks outstanding. - deep gold with a slight haze and a fluffy off-white head piled on top that settles down leaving a proper lace. Very enticing.

S - A bit perplexing as nothing immediately jumps out at me that's characteristic of the IPA style. Up front I get a tiny bit of biscuit. When I REALLY got in there I started to pick up some citrusy hops and maybe a hint of pine, but I shouldn't have to linger to detect anything notable on the nose.

T - An absolute miss. The flavor of the beer is a bit of a void, much like the nose- so much so that I have a hard time even calling it an IPA. The hop character is way watered down, leaving a mildly bitter aftertaste that is completely unsupported by any sort of malt. The beers lacks a solid backbone and ultimately tastes somewhere between wet paper and bitter orange/lemon peel.

M - Carbonation is close to where is needs to be for the style, but the lack of appropriate flavor makes is seem a bit watery with a creeping bitterness that makes the pint hard to finish.

O - As Columbia's one and only craft brewery, I so badly want to love this beer, and I suppose that's why I keep trying it. On a positive note, Sacred Heart does seem to be improving slightly with every batch - but it has a long way to go to even be on par with mass - produced pale ales. To be frank, this beer in its current release is hard to drink and the taste is lightyears away from competing with other local IPAs such as Coast's HopArt or Westbrook IPA. I wish the gentlemen of Conquest the best of luck, but I urge hopheads to steer clear from this lackluster pale.
