Atmosphere: This is by far one of the best atmospheres for restaurants in Huntington. It's certainly one of the more hip and trendy places. You can go here for dinner on any night of the week and expect a good crowd.
Quality: The quality of the food here is great. The pizzas are the best in town and the seafood appetizers are superb. I always make sure to get the ahi tuna every time I visit. However, the quality of the beer is where Backyard earns a few knocks. I will start by saying that Backyard is THE place to go for draft craft beer in Huntington. They have the best tap selection. What hurts them is that they don't rotate many kegs and some kegs seem to sit for quite some time. I have received a couple beers that were either stale or almost flat, which indicates that either the kegs were old or mishandled. Lastly, all beers are served in pint glasses or 20 oz mugs. During the last release of Hoptimum I was given 20 ounces of it in a frozen mug... Not only is the frozen mug cringe-worthy, but the size of the glass is slightly irresponsible. A part of me died the last time I was there when I witnessed a bartender pouring Chimay White into one of the 20 oz mugs. 8%+ beers should never see a 20 oz glass at a bar or restaurant due to the alcohol content.
Service: Most of the servers here are very nice and personable. My only complaint is that the servers and bar tenders aren't very knowledgeable about their beers. I can remember one instance where a server had to grab a manager to talk to me about the beers because I asked for their IPA selection. The manager recommended a Sierra Nevada Narwhal.
Selection: As much as I hate to, I have to give them a 3 for selection. Their draft list is pretty darn good for the area. You can always expect to see some Sierra Nevada, Great Lakes, one decent import (Chimay, Weihenstephaner), Bridge Brew Works, Goose Island, and etc. However, not all of the taps are rotated and there aren't any bottles to choose from. All of the craft is from draft. I would guess that probably 10 of the 20 taps are rotated. I couldn't tell you the last time I saw their #9, Magic Hat Circus Boy, Raging Bitch, Harpoon taps (two hefe variations), Yuengling, or PBR were swapped out for something else. Lastly, their beer is a little more expensive than most other places. They are roughly $1-2 more than most places. I purchased a 16oz glass of Weihenstephaner Hefeweizen for about $7 and I could have walked down the street to the wine bar or Hot Corner and purchased a bottle for $3.50. Overall, if you want some great draft beer in Huntington, this is the place to go.
Food: The food is great. Most of the pizzas are superb and the appetizers and deserts are great. I only wish that they would have more pizzas with marinara and some with more adventurous cheeses.
Edit: They don't appear to be serving frosted glasses anymore and it looks like they now have snifters. It also appears that the service has gone downhill too. The last time I was there I was in a party of four and we were there for almost three hours. The wait was an hour, which I don't have a complaint about. However, our server was terrible. He forgot to ring in our order and it took 45 minutes for us to receive our ahi tuna appetizer, which should have taken only a matter of minutes. We then had to wait another 45 minutes for our two pizzas. We arrived at 7:00 and weren't able to leave until almost 10:00.
