A Belgian-styled amber ale, brewed with honey and rye. On-tap at the source and served in its branded shaker pint glass. On to the beer:

A short head sits on top this dark amber colored beer, which leaves a few touches of webbed lace around the glass. Not much of a looker, though its aroma pumps my hopes up. The aroma brings a spicy yeast to the nose, a dusting of toasted sugar, and honey. No sign of the eye at this stage, however that changes at the taste. The first note to hit is that rye spice, and just after that hits comes a sweet flavor, like the flavor of brewing sugar. Honey, there it is, adds a little extra dimension. Sweet and spicy, but in this case the spice is coming from the rye, not the yeast. It's lighter-medium bodied, and finishing off the beer is an aftertaste which is peppery and slightly sweet.

Sometimes it works, and sometimes it fails. Criterion is no world beater, though overall it comes out as a successful attempt at a Belgian amber with added ingredients.

They call this a "Belgian Amber." Dark amber with a modest foam that dissipates fairly rapidly. Minimal carbonation but there's a slight tingle in the mouth. Some malt in the nose. THe flavor seems to have some biscuity taste, but they've been burnt, not browned. Not really yeasty except for the drying tendency.

Winey, vegetable flavors. Hints of cherry and pear skins. A little malty sweetness with each new sip. Seriously dry at the finish. I just couldn't work up much enthusiasm for this. It seems too bitter for the limp flavors and it would have benefited from some sudsiness. On tap at Local Habit in San Diego.

On tap at Field Of Drafts held at The Hanger in Lancaster, CA.

Pours a clear orange with a foamy beige head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Tiny dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, honey, and slight rye aromas. Taste is much the same with honey and rye flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a nice honey presence in the aroma and flavor.
