Had high hopes for this west coat imperial but was disappointed with the blatant imbalance between malts and hops... over done on the malts with a lingering bitterness on the tongue... Alcohol was noticeable and pungent...
This beer was overdone in my opinion... The overall flavor profile would benefit from more hops and less malts...

This was a very solid Double IPA. It poured a medium gold color with a small head concitering the fact that every inch of the glass was used for beer! The smell was super hoppy with plenty of piney dry hops in the nose. The taste was quite good too, good ammount of hop kick and a slight maltiness that kicked in mid-sip. But there was nothing really spectacular about this beer, it seemed like it just needed one more thing to make it great that I could not put my finger on. But as it is, it is a very tasty IPA that one should try if one gets the chance.

Tap @ Mission Valley. Very nice Imperial. Pours a dark bronze with a slight head. Aroma is hops, pine tar, and perfume. Strong and fresh, even out of the bottle (yes, I've had that too). Taste is very smooth, but with a strong hop flavor. Resiny goodness that play well with the grapefruit. Citrus-sweet finish.

This beer pours a slightly cloudy yellowish orange color. It boasts a thick, fluffy off white head with a yellow tint to it. The head fades very slowly, leaving a thick curtain of lace.

This peer has a strong piney aroma. Some citrusy grapefruit is present. I can detect a surprising malty sweet aroma as well. Some fusel alcohol aroma as well.

This beer tastes like it smells. More malt than I would expect. It has a citrusy and piney hop flavor, with a slight alcohol flavor.

This beer is full bodied. It leaves a sweet piney aftertaste. The alcohol warms as it goes down. Carbonation is good for the style.

This beer wouldnt be the best session beer. It is high in alcohol. The bottle says 9.4% ABV. Also, the aggressive alcohol flavors would become cloying. One is good enough.

Overall: This is a decent beer. I dont think I will go out of my way to try it again. I think I was just caught up in the name. Hop Juice sounds so cool!

on tap at Lucky Baldwin's in Pasadena

This is one of the best examples of the deliciousness of the West Coast DIPA.

It has the same beautiful floral aroma you'll find in the Plinys, Maharaja - better hopbombs. In fact this could be mistaken for a Pliny the Elder, I'd imagine.

I really can't think of more to say about this fine beer, other than if you cross paths with it - drink it, you'll be better for it.

Thanks to Blitheringidiot for this growler. I've been wanting to try it for a long time.
Pours a nice golden orange with a pretty craggy 2 finger head that becomes top coating sticky lacing.
Aroma is all hops...fresh clean citrus hops and pine ois.
Flavor is (surprise?)....HOPS...sweet malt to start then a mixture of hop varieties finishing to a light sweetness and grapefruit peel.
Mouthfeel is smooth and not cloying at all.
A very nice balance exists in this hop bomb.
Woo Hoo!
Good stuff.

A: Amber in color very little haze some lace nice bit of carbonation but not to much

S: Smellled really nice, grass floral, hoppy freshness! You can tell IBU was high from smell alone

T: Tasted Good, very hoppy as expected from a double IPA. Tha alchohol was present, but mainly grassy pine tastes with bitter HOPS. Very bitter. I loved how bitter.

M: Clean, crisp, then dry. Nice mouthfeel.

D: I really enjoyed this beer. I was in the mood for a very bitter IPA and thats what I got. Its a bit much to drink more then the 750ml, but 750 was not too much either.

On tap at Carmel Country Road. This batch was 7.99% listed. Orange with minimal lace. Strong with heavy malt, good mouthfeel. Every hop they can find and put together here, cascade, warrior, amerillo, etc. etc. And dry-hopping. Oily. Better than average example of this style which I believe are overated.

I'm not sure what people are complaining about. Eat a hop pellet. Chew on it and memorize its flavor. That's what this beer tastes like. And that's what it advertises. It's very hoppy and a nice diversion from the rest of the stuff you can get. Malty? Not really, but they obviously had to start with a lot of malt to get the ABV where it is.

Hmmm, me thinks this is an older bottle...

A: Rather nice amber color with a good amount of head but no lacing.

S: Bread, no hops at all, just bread and caramel.

T: More bread and caramel with a hint of lime citrus and pine. again, probably due to an older bottle. I do like the lime, but really it is not enough to sustain.

M: Creamy and full bodied. Nothing harsh about it

D: Meh. I think that pretty much says it all

On tap at Oggi's Corona, CA location this beer poured a darker orange/amber color. There's no better description for it than its name "Hop Juice." It smells like concentrated hops oils, and tastes like pure hops oils, but has some malt in the back making it a slightly sweet but not to syrupy, which gives it a very good mouthfeel of hop goodness. The ABV listed on the menu was also over 9.

22 oz bottle into a couple of pint glasses. Thanks go to HopDerek for sharing this one.

Pours a clear coppery amber with a couple fingers of foamy eggshell white head. Thin yet creamy retention leaves some thickish lacing back. The aroma is super rich smelling with tropcial fruits...and not much else. Maybe some floral hops and spice, a touch of sticky caramel but this is really uneven towards the citrus.

The taste is very similar to the aroma, being very unbalanced towards the sweeter side of things. There is a ton of citrus and caramel and a good bit of hops as well, which come off as a bit more herbal and resinous, but this is definitley all about the fruits and malts. Finishes with a good bit of leftover tang and light bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a generally creamy feel but there is also a good bit of beef to it as well. A bit too much warmth actually, mixing with the bitterness, herbal qualities, and sweetness, to give this a medicial feel.

Unbalanced and warm aren't qualties that I look for in DIPA, so this was fairly disappointing. I'm not sure how old this bottle was, so I guess that some hop fade could have attributed to the unbalanced nature of this. I'd give this a try on draft sometime, to see how it compares.

Originally reviewed November 26, 2006. On tap at Pizza Port, Carlsbad. Musky aroma of Columbus or Cascade, with hop resins and musky lemon tones domianting. Burnished copper pour, orange and gold. Flavor is a sweet, sticky honey-lucious. Astringent and heavily bitter, I find the hop character in this beer somewhat one dimensional and resin driven. There isn’t an interplay between floral and biting. Yet, flavorful and full of cascade orange qualities. There are pears and tannic pear skins, that play with a more grapefruit level. Palate edges sweet and sticky, but a long continually morphing hop character build creative play.

Appearance - Pours a nice, dark red color with two fingers of great looking head which recedes to leave minimal lacing.

Smell - A faint hint of hops, citrus, bread, caramel, etc. Nothing that is that "impressive".

Taste - Very bitter and hot. I was expecting more of a citrus rush but all I really got was bitter pine followed by pretty intense sickly sweetness and then ends with it going back to a slight bitterness.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied, oily on the tongue, decent carbonation.

Drinkability - I personally did not think this was highly drinkable. There are many other DIPA's out there with the same or higher ABV and the alcohol was well hidden. Here, it was hot and you could clearly taste the alcohol. Not very balanced overall. Will not seek out again.

22 oz bomber, no freshness date. ABV on my sample is listed @ 9.4%

Hazy orange, thin head, no retention, not much in the way of lace.

Aroma is scorched caramel, earthy hops, some citrus.

Flavor is sweet caramel up front with a grapefruit pith finish.

Alcohol is a bit hot going down.

Bottle courtesy of Bu11zeye: Poured a deep cloudy orangey color ale with a small foamy head with average retention and some good lacing. Aroma consists of a sweet malt base with loads of grassy hops with a dominant bitterness. Taste is an unbalance mix between some grassy and extremely bitter hops with a malt base that I just too sweet for my liking. Body is full with some great carbonation and no alcohol could ever be perceptible over this much hops and malt. I am not sure if my expectation where too high or what, but I didn't enjoy this as much as expected - the balance between the sweet malt and the bitter and grassy hops is hard to digest...

There is too much going on. And due to the ABV this comes in a smaller glass and never on Happy Hour...why, this is an overated beer there and one to avoid if possible.
A: Slight gold/light brown color.
S: Hoppy hits the notes with citrus notes that just jump out.
T: Too sweet and hard for an IPA to enjoy.
M: Milky and alcohol kill this one
O: Have had it several times...it is okay

Draught @ O’Brien’s San Diego
The beer resides in the glass a golden amber color, the head big and white, the texture creamy with the lace a tight sheet upon the glass. “Whoa Nellie”, hops floral to the max, sweet and a treat for the old schnozzle, start is sweet and nicely malted with the top middling in it’s feel to the palate. Finish is delectable in it’s a acidity, the hops potent and pleasing to us hop heads, the aftertaste dry and long lasting, and a remarkable companion to O’Brien’s Garlic Fries, raw Garlic and ton’s of hops “Yummy”! Lol

Chill hazed amber colored beer the color of apple cider. Normal sized off-white head.

Strong citrus hop aroma, both grapefruit and oranges. Malt and toffee with a strange chocolate cake scent. Strong caramel aroma is under the hops if you manage to pick it apart.

Starts out strong and bitter, something like a hop cough syrup. Strongly hopped but tastes more herbal than citrus. Savory flavor, heavy on wood and pineapple with some mango. Little bit of melon flavor, shares some aspects of a Barleywine, this one straddles two beer styles.

Mouthfeel is good.

Little bit of a disappointment, I had hoped for more of a citrus hop bomb and actually got something closer to a Barleywine. This is good just not quite what I had expected.

Canned pineapple and candied oranges.

Very fruity malt up front, with lots of sweetness. A bit cloying.

Not quite enough hops to balance the overpowering sweetness.

I enjoyed the beer but found it to be a little bit one dimensional in its malt, with the fruitiness taking over most of the palette. The hops do provide some foil but also had their own fruitiness to the beer.

Might be a great beer to pair with dessert or maybe a really spicy dish even, but not very drinkable on its own.
