How can you reject a pint of beer during happy hour that costs the same as a soda? Well, on to the beer:

Appearance is a shade or two darker than bronze with decent head. Toast is in the aroma along with fresh fine. And to taste...it starts with a splash of carmael, and it then transforms into a fresh, crisp, mild hoppiness with piney notes. As it warms up, there's subtle fruit. The feel was pretty smooth, cool, and a tad creamy.

Enough flavor to bring you up, but not overpowering to the point where it knocks down its purpose of being brisk.

Pale copper with short white head. Metallic malt aroma, some nuts, a little bit of hops. Flat tasting pale. Malt and hops, but neither make much of an impression. Very average. Again, as with all of these restaurant-breweries, the pale ale fails to impress.

On-tap at Carmel Country Road. Did not get aroma, probably because freshly washed with chemicals. Mild grapefruit colour with a wisp of a head, and lace. Above average carbonation and bitter aftertaste. Like a below average IPA, only the faint taste of C hop. Nothing special.

On tap at Oggi's Corona, CA location. The beer was a nice clear amber/orange color which is my favorite for a pale ale. The smell was piney, and the taste was high citrus and pine, with enough pale malt in the background to give it a great light mouthfeel and balance. Finish is pretty dry. It really displayed well the hop characters while still keeping the beer fairly light and drinkable.

Consumed 11/05/07 at Oggi's Santa Clarita, CA.

Clear gold. Small head. No aroma at all I could detect. Much maltier than I expected with overwhelmed hops beating a retreat from the palate. Clean finish. Strange choice for an APA to be so malty with no hops. Unmemorable, other than that.

On-tap at Oggi's Tustin

A: The beer pours a light amber color with a small off-white head.

S: Lots of citrus hop notes to the nose with a big of pine and grass. A bit on the sweet side with plenty of bread, toasted malt, and some toffee malt aromas.

T: A pretty harsh bitterness to the beer which just isn't pleasant. Piney hops with some grapefruit and grapefruit peel. Some malt flavor to it, definitely a bit of toast and bread, but not much sweetness.

M: Medium in body with a moderate to high carbonation.

O: The aroma wasn't too bad, but the bitterness was just too abrasive.

On tap at Oggi's Carmel Mountain.

A: Burnished gold and transparent with a finger of white foam.

S: Baked bread, biscuit, caramel, and a little cardboard. Light orange and pine. A muted aroma.

T: The beer is lightly bitter with a dominating malt sweetness. Lots of bread and caramel and just a little citrus.

M: Medium in body with upper moderate carbonation.

Overall: Bland and malty.

On tap at Oggi's in Del Mar.

Appearance: Golden amber color with a stiff and lasting off white head.

Smell: Very malty and sweet nose. Nothing spectacular but good.

Taste: Sweet and malty opening with a bitter midde. The hop flavor in the middle is punching and lightly florral but mostly just a bitter spiciness. The ending is short and sweet in flavor.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied with a clean sweetness.

Drinkability: I think this beer is a bit overhopped even for a California pale ale. It tastes more like an IPA. Tasty but nothing special.

Very nice clear gold presentation with a white head. Absolutely minimal head and no lacing. The taste is nicely hopped and gives me a very real cirus sense. The fruitness does not hurt this beer and I believe it could last through a session. Average mouthfeel with no particularly strength in any one direction.

Medium amber color. Small head. Aroma is malty and a touch mango. A medium bodied pale ale. Malts are fruity. Hops are grapefruity. There is a yeasty tang to the finish. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

On tap at Oggi's Pizza and Brewing Company in Santa Clarita, CA.

Pours a hazy orange with a foamy off-white head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt and some herbal hop aromas. Taste is much the same with some earthy hop flavors on the finish. There is a medium hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer but the smell is pretty mild.

Reviewed 12/28/2007 (Sampler @ Oggi's Peoria, AZ):

Pours a dark golden color, small creamy white head. Clear body, light fizzyness. Hoppy malty aroma. Hoppy somewhat piney taste. Bitter, almost acidic. Warming up less acidic, but I'm not fan of the malt-hop flavor combo present here.

Brewed & sampled on tap at Oggi's Scottsdale, AZ
This beer is a full reddish-copper color, which shows a brilliantly clear body when held up to the light. It is topped by a wispy pale, tan colored head that is a typically flabby tap generated head. Ah, the aroma has a solid citrusy hop note to it; I get notes of grapefruit and tangerine that are quite prominent. This has some very nice hop aromatics; there is a light herbal note in the background which only adds to the overall effect of the aroma.

The taste does not quite live up to the awesomely hoppy aroma. There is a nice sharp bitterness throughout, a bit of herbal character, some mix of pine and grassy notes, but where is that prominent citrus character? The beer is too dry to show the citrus notes in the flavor; it could use some more body to as the beer is quite light on the palate. This beer is definitely hop dominated, but only a wisp of citrus character shows up in the flavor. There is a dry crystal malt note here that adds a light toasted note, but it is again a bit hard to notice because the beer is so dry.

Pair of dice pale. Pours a closer to amber but some reddish hues. Good clarity with a soft white head. Did dissipate through the tasting but did remain through a ring around the edge till the end. Limited lacing though.

The nose is light overall. Some limited malty notes, grainy and a touch of sweeter caramel. A hint of citrus on the back end.

The taste was more responsive. A sweeter malt flavor that was limited in taste but some caramel and a light husky flavor. A light bitterness from hops but finished with a nicer citrus flavor. Some lighter yeasty notes on the backend but not overly bad.

The body was closer to light than mid. Limited carbonation which helped some of the malt flavor come out. Not much overall but easy to drink.

Poured a nice golden color with a small white head. Nose is slightly hopped and some grani to it. Taste matches the nose. Lightly hopped and well balanced but a pretty standard pale ale.Mouthfeel was light, crisp and balanced. No tto hoppy like a lot West Coast Pales. More to the tradional style. Average Pale Ale but drinkable for sure.

Appearance: This beer arrived topless...a victim of an untrained barkeep and a pouring temperature which locked the CO² in solution. The body was light copper with very nice clarity but absolutely no foam or lacing.

Aroma: Because of the pour...'twas hard to coax this baby out of her shell. She did manage to tease me with a few subtle hints of citrus and fruit.

Taste: A very sweet entry onto the palate followed mid-taste by the rich malt which seemed to be absent from the nose. Finish was standard APA hops.

Mouthfeel: Thinner than expected...butvery pleasant nonetheless.

Drinkability: A good summer refresher with the main drawback being the cost...$4.26/pint? For that price I (at least) expect to be tipping a barkeep that understands how to pour beer.

This was quite an interesting beer.

Poured a bit murky sickly tan color with decent head. Very fruity and floral nose. Mild hop bitterness is quickly overwhelmed by a big fruity surge with a character I find hard to describe. Almost like a Belgian pale ale. Finishes sweet.

Certainly you can't be in a hoppy mood to drink this, but it's interesting in that is different from most brewpub pales.
