West Coast IPA meets Midwest Rye. Unrated is a beer for the Minnesota hopheads. This Rye IPA greets you with a burst of citrus hop aroma and tempts you with the spice from the rye. 612Brew’s most full-bodied and hoppy beer, yet easy enough that your mom would like it. If your mom is awesome.

On-tap at 612 Brew, Minneapolis, MN
A: The beer is clear dark amber in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high frothy white head that has good retention properties and consistently left a short head covering the surface and lots of lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Light aromas of rye are present in the nose along with hints of caramel malts and piney hops.
T: The taste follows the smell and has flavors of spicy rye along with notes of caramel malts and hints of rye.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and slightly crisp on the a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This seems like it could be a bland IPA, but the rye spices things up a lot.

Unrated Rye IPA pours a cloudy dark copper color with a big, long lasting and lacing head. Earthy aroma. Flavor is very earthy, with a strong and noticeable earthy hop flavor. Decent body and feel. Overall, stronger, and very earthy.

Again no can dating so I have no idea how old it is.
Does have some hop fruitiness but the spiciness of the rye it bigger and the malt base seems even larger than that. Overall kinda' funny mix of aroma with only okay blending.
Hazy amber of orange to brown. Nice dense tan head with good stamina and sticky lacing.
In the flavor the rye again stands out. The hops are earthy and not the fruitiness advertised on this. Prominent bitterness that dominates the finish, which seems to hold a bit of a creaminess on the finish. The feel is kinda nice although maybe a little more carbonation than I like, but pretty rich and smooth.
Rye is too strong and not blending on this one. I wouldn't seek this one out.

this is better than its ratings, especially when fresh, not sure why there is so little love for the beers these guys make, i have liked most of them well enough to be honest. this is a cool beer, heavy on the rye, which i think isnt common enough in the beers that claim it in their names generally speaking. plenty of the pale rye malt dusty peppery spice, which goes well with a heaping dose of fresh tasting spicy earthy hops, some citrus too, but a ton of bitterness in the end, which is where i can see this one losing some folks. its anything but subtle in the finish, gnarly bitterness lingers longer than anything else and seems to drive a train through some of the subtleties that were present earlier on. i very much enjoyed the flavor of this being so driven by the rye, its a nice use of it, and i like the progression to the hoppier back end, but its a bit much on the IBUs. good carbonation and a nice medium body, its better beer i think than its been given credit for being here on BA.
