CAN: 12 fl oz. Purchased at Stein's Market & Deli, New Orleans, LA. Standard pull-tab can. Generally appealing label design. No canned on date.
"Imperial oatmeal stout brewed with coffee, chocolate, cinnamon & chili peppers.""Brewed with Bern Fruit coffee co." 10.0% ABV.
HEAD: ~4cm. Khaki colour. Creamy and robust for a 10% ABV ale, sticking around a good 7+ minutes.
BODY: Opaque solid black. No yeast/lees are visible within.
Looks pretty standard for an imperial stout.
AROMA: Cassia bark, faint ancho chile warmth, chocolate malt, dark malt sweetness, and muted coffee. I hoped for more expressive coffee aromatics, but hopefully the taste is better than the aroma.
Not finding any true cinnamon or overt roasted barley.
Aromatic intensity is low for the style and below average overall.
TASTE & TEXTURE: Has a nice full-bodied dry mouthfeel that accentuates the timid ancho chile warmth and flavour. Powdered chili pepper, cassia spice, chocolate malt. Dark malt sweetness runs throughout but it never tastes cloying - though the chile flavour helps keep it in balance more than the generic subdued coffee flavour does; I'll never know why so many breweries play up the quality of the coffee in their labels and then don't commit to it or deliver in the actual beer.
Well-carbonated, smooth, approachable albeit unrefreshing. Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, or harsh. Does have a bit of scratchiness from the powdery chile, brittle coffee, and ground cassia bark.
It's well balanced though surprisingly tame for an imperial stout...lacks the bold flavours you might expect/hope for in a 10.0% ABV imperial stout.
OVERALL: Despite a disappointing coffee profile and ill enough commitment to its flavours, this comes in drinking easier than most 10% ABV imperial stouts - though the tradeoff is lesser depth of flavour and reduced complexity.
$2.79 for a can was a bit steep in hindsight, but I guess if you're after good beers from Mississippi it's slim pickings for the most part. It doesn't hold its own against the better widely distributed expressions of the style from other states, but it's competent and drinks like it's far less alcoholic than it is.

Dark reddish brown brew with solid tan cap.
Scent of roasted malt with an accompanying hit of bright coffee. Rather rich scent with an overriding but not intrusive scent of spice and floral.
Taste on entry is a nicely combined group of flavors that echo the scent but paint it in broader strokes. Just more in all respects. I get the spice in the scent but not the chocolate which emerges mid palate like a solo singer in the chorus that takes center stage briefly then recedes back into the group. I get the chili as almost a high note in in the middle that reemerges in the aftertaste.
Full texture with balancing carbonation.
Brewer says this is an Imperial oatmeal stout brewed with coffee, chocolate, cinnamon and chili peppers.
It's that and a bit more, fairly complex for a flavored Stout in that everything promised is there and works together in harmony.

First had on draft into tulip. This "Imperial Oatmeal Coffee Stout" is also brewed with chocolate, cinnamon and chili peppers. To borrow an expression from a Milwaukee bar owner, it beats a kick in the head.

Poured into a tulip glass at the brewery
A: Shoe polish brown with a thick 3 finger tan head that sits and sits. Thick, ambitious lacing.
S: That Bean Fruit coffee scent takes hold of your olfactory, followed by charred dark chocolate and cinnamon.
T: Thick, sweet and robust. The Flare Incident on steroids with coffee, cocoa nibs and light heat on the finish. A touch of cinnamon rounds out this beauty. Let it warm for even more chili pepper taste. The coffee wakes you up. The 10.3% puts you in another dimension.
M: Thick and chewy with medium carbonation.
O: My favorite LT brew (tying with Lucktoberfest). Lucas and krewe knocked this one out of the park.

Tasted at the brewery during the third anniversary celebration. It's a double version of their award winning Flare Incident brew infused with cinnamon, cocoa nibs, Ancho & Gaujillo chiles and Bean Fruit Coffee (Old Route 4 Coffee) a local Jackson, MS coffee company. Great coffee smell, chunky mouth feel with a chocolate and coffee finish. Alcohol is well hidden. An excellent brew. Love it! Cheers!
