This wit is the typical pale yellow color, and it's got a bit of a gleam to it. It is heavily hazed, to the point of opacity. The head, which reaches one finger and dwindles down slowly, is as pure and bright a white as I've ever seen, and it puts down sturdy patching with the beer's recession.
There's some nice spicing along with a wheat and lemon twang. It gets the earthy must down well, too. Emphasis leans very much on the clove and coriander smell, while the flavor pulls out a little more of the lemon zest on the front, then moves to must, then a little leaf and sour/tang combination at the end. While a light note of fruits can be derived from the yeast in the nose, some subtlety is lost in flavor that's more heavy on hops than most. Still, it's a good Americanization without losing tradition, and a good beer.
The motuhfeel works well, though the body has slightly more heft and slightly less depth than the great ones. Still, it's just barely medium-bodied, with a nice crispness, smoothness, and brightness.

Rivertowne Grateful White
12. oz can, no apparent freshness dating
$1.83 @ Whole Foods, Plymouth Meeting, PA

Appearance: Slightly dark for a typical witbier, but this isn't a typical witbier, it's more of an Americanized version. The cloudy yellow-orange body displays tiny bubbles beneath a bright white head of froth. It initially fizzes like soda-pop. Unfortunately the head drops quickly and the lacing is just average.

Smell: Enticing. Spice, but not overdone. It's not bright, neither is it dull. Lots of yeasty fruitiness, and orange peel as well. Wheaty malt is present as well. Very nicely balanced.

Taste: As suggested by the aroma, it offers a nice balance of fruitiness, spice and malt. The bitterness is kept to a minimum as it should be. The coriander comes through clearly without being sharp or dusty/woody/dull; and the malt is at just the right level so that it doesn't seem thin or overly "full" in flavor or body, riding over the spices roughshod. It's very nicely balanced but I should point out that it's fuller than you'd expect of a witbier, at least a European version.

Mouthfeel: A touch high in carbonation, but still OK for the style. It bristles the tongue.

Overall: Really quite nice. The only drawback was the lack of head retention, which could be an isolated batch, or perhaps a dirty glass. Certainly worth trying.

Thanks to the legendary woodychandler for this beer. Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a yellowish/white color with a 1/2 inch head. Taste is tart, lemons, wheat, refreshing but mild. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall this is a pretty good beer.

On my last trip to Da Burgh, I met up with a couple of my buddies at Rivertowne Pour House and the staff was kind enough to assemble a mixed case of four (4) six-packs of each of their six (6) CANned beers in support of The CANQuest (TM)! If that is not customer service, then I do not know what is!

From the CAN: "Malt Beverage with Spices Added"; The Malty/Hoppy Meter pegs this one somewhere between Pineapple and Scottish, toward the Malty end of the spectrum; "Andrew has spent years creating this perfect Wit. He combines crisp coriander, sweet orange peel, and grains of paradise to enhance an aromatic malt character that will have you dancing into the promised land. Try our tribute beer that is as eclectic as our grateful friends."; "Cheers and thanks, [undersigned] Andrew T. [?] Maxwell Brew Master".

Both Mr. Maxwell's verbiage and the groovy label art are meant to be evocative of The Grateful Dead and I totally dig it, man. I keep saying that we are witnessing the return of the late-1960's/early-1970's and this is more proof.

The Crack was not as explosive as some have been, but it was still another brimful CAN. The inverted Glug was marvy, unleashing two fingers of dense, bone-white head with decent retention. The beer beneath it was a cloudy lemon-yellow and the visual effect was once more of looking at a lemon meringue pie. Whee! Nose had a far out spiciness underlain by the sweet orange peel. Sweet mother of beer! Mouthfeel struck me as being kind of on the thin side, but I would be shocked to get a chewy Wit in my mouth. The flavors seemed somehow muted, especially as compared to the intensity of the nose. Certainly, the peppery spiciness was there, but it just lacked an Ooomph to make it memorable. It was on the finish that the orange peel really came into play. I could taste it long after the swallow. It was a decent interpretation of the style, but the style is not really my bag and I have had better CANned beers from these guys. I would tell you to make like a hippie, man, and try anything and everything once and beyond that is up to you. For me, it was a once and done.
