Another blast from the past... never thought i'd see Tuman's show up on BA. The old Tuman's Alcohol Abuse Center was once a cramped dingy tunnel of a bar, inhabited by a crowd of drunks and weirdos swimming through a perpetual smoky haze, occasionally contorting themselves to the classic punk and soul gems on the juke, among other randomly lewd activities.
Fast forward 12 years. Tuman's has been scrubbed squeaky clean, no more tobacco stains, questionable smells, busted up couches, or $2.00 Guinness pints. No more Tamale Guy or Muffin Lady either. Top 40 music blares randomly overhead. There's P.E.I. mussels on the menu now. Some chick that was likely in grade school the last time I was at Tuman's is bartending.
The beer list has clearly been revamped recently, and i'd imagine that's why they're adding the place now. Good variety of taps, even a couple of handpumps, but they were empty (always seems to be the case, doesn't it?). Token bottle selection of lame macros and imports. Tap highlights: Baudonia, Founders Porter, Lil Sumpin Sumpin, Sixpoint Pacifica, Bells Double Cream, Curieux, Uinta Labyrinth, and more. Some of these were on beermenus but not on the printed menu we received while here. The two drafts I had seemed a little long in the tooth.
Food... we had "totchos", a small plate of tater tots with an ounce of thin ballpark cheese on the plate underneath, topped with a tiny teaspoon of pico de gallo and ice cream scoop of "creme fraiche" aka sour cream. The whole dish wasn't even hot... basically it was a stoner-food fuckup for $8.
Service was adequate, the bartender was also waiting tables early on a weekday night. There were only a handful of people in here, though there was a group of 4-5 overserved girls cackling and emitting shrill omigods at the end of the bar, that appeared to be friends of the next bartender coming on shift (who didn't look a day over 21).
Tuman's is a sterile makeover of a classic Chicago dive, brought to you by the owners of Mac's American on Division. At least they kept the front window sign and mounted it in the back, the old Tiffany lamp, along with a few photos of the old bar hung on the front wall.
