Notes from October 13, 2013

Appearance: Poured from the tap into a pint glass. A small white head develops and stays throughout the tasting. Very little lacing on the glass.

Smell: On the nose expect floral notes, spices, and citrusy hops. This beer also has some mild malt sweetness. However, it smells more like an IPA than a red ale.

Taste: The elements listed above are present in the taste. Alcohol is not really present in the taste, but does warm.

Mouthfeel. some carbonation. Smooth and silky over the palate, but a little dry in the finish.

Overall: This beer was brewed to celebrate the 130th anniversary of the Frederick News-Post. I enjoyed this beer on tap at Dan's Restaurant and Taphouse in Boonsboro, MD. Monocacy Brewing Co. is calling this a red "IPA," stating this beer will appeal to both hop heads, who love American IPAs and other beer drinkers, who enjoy American red ales. And this beer does seem to strike an interesting balance between the two styles. An enjoyable beer overall.
