The beer has been aged for six months, though not in barrels, and is fermented with molasses and brown sugar.

32 oz. Growlette poured into a North Brewery tulip glass.

Apeearance: A little more opaque than expected for an Old Ale, with a mocha-colored head that leaves a decent amount of raindrop-like lacing around the bulb and logo part of the glass.

Smell: Immediate nuanced sweetness and sourness -- very much like it was in a bourbon barrel without the bourbon, but it hasn't been aged in a barrel. The brown sugar sweetness is there, though subtle, as the molasses and sourness seem to shine through, along with possible hints of leather, char, nail polish, and barbeque sauce, and with those some red wine characteristics too.

Taste: Again, the sourness, with the molasses creeping up, lending itself then to some toasted but not too powerful brown sugar sweetness, going into leather, some char, some nail polish -- though not quite into the Flemish Red sometimes-overpowering nature -- with the best characteristic being the the long, complex finish, melding sourness and sweetness together in a balanced and oddly harmonious way.

Mouthfeel: For as dark and rich as this beer is, the carbonation does it's job well, giving that creaminess to let the sour and sweet flavors come through, without being too close to the flat point or overly-carbonated. To get the best out of it, I wouldn't let this one stick around too long in the fridge, however -- utilize the greenness and subtly of the carbonation as a positive.

Drinkability: It's not that brown sugar and molasses are new or seldom-used ingredients, but with both of them -- especially used together -- this beer's admirable in the way that the nuanced amalgam of flavors and characteristics comes together, without being too tug-of-war in any of the possibly many directions. At 9%, it also doesn't feel like 9%, which can be of course good, but also dangerous. Easily, however, one of the best beers from North Brewery so far, and certainly something to try when it's available. Complex, kind of bizarre in some ways, extremely drinkable, and yet, most likely, appealing to many of the folks out there I would imagine.

Poured into my big snifter since this one is on the strong side. Pours jet black, with a thin fizzy head from a vigorous pour (probably my fault for leaving it in the fridge overnight). Smells of sweet fermented dark fruits and molasses, with some strong sour and vinous scents. Taste is big; burnt sugar and molasses, sourness and wine-like flavors, with a drying finish with both sour and sweet lingering in the aftertaste. Mouthfeel is full and slick.
The second old ale from this brewery, and the second old ale I've had; this surpasses VII. Although it's slightly weaker, this one ups the flavor ante bigtime. One of the best beers I've had from The North Brewery so far.
