LCBO seasonal. Biere de Garde in malty yeasty sweet sandwich. Just too sweet. Floral malty yeastiness. Creamy mouthfeel. Large retained head. 750 ml is a lot even for 4 people.Want more of the spice, the biere de garde part. Pours like a champagne, understated carbonation.

Corked, aged around 6 months: Bright straw color with moderate activity. Foamy light beige 2 finger head, lasting around 5-10 minutes, with average legs but good swirl reaction. Flavors of sweet barley, wheat, pears, apples, light caramel, Belgian yeast, coriander, and floral hops. Slick and almost smooth medium to full body with crispy carbonation. Medium to strong strength finish, dominant cereal feel, soft barnyard and straw effect, light maillard sensation turning more into honey than caramel. Subtly spiced but quite yeasty. Slightly vinous and alcoholic, yet still very well hidden and intensified, more warming and pleasant. So the attenuation is pretty high, as is the uplifting freshness. The general feel is a cross Tripel and Belgian Pale Ale. Nice balance and highly drinkable. Overall excellent quality craft, it aged very well too.

Very classical French bière de garde. Golden colour, it delivers a lot of esters with notes of peach, pear.
Moderate to high carbonation. Not that bad

Clear golden color with a thin head, but keeping a constant plate.
Aroma with predominant notes of oranges and hints of white grapes, musk, distant banana, apple and white bread. Slightly sour.
Flavor with predominant notes of Cointreau liquor, mild curacao, musk, bread, bubble gum and apricot. Dry aftertaste with a very mild bitterness.
Light towards medium body with appropriate carbonation. Alcohol of 8% is well hidden.
Delicate and easy to drink Strong Ale. More assertive than complex.

Another fine 'biere blonde de degustation' to whet ones appetite (for beer) and this one comes from Brasserie Duyck based out of Jenlain a town only 9km from the Belgian border - now that's a pedigree to be proud of. The only other Bière de Garde I've reviewed so far was 3 Monts, which was fantastic, so I'm expecting big things from Or.

Poured from a 750ml bottle into a Chimay chalice.

A: Presents a clear golden body with large champagne bubbles and a minimal white head.

S: The nose is upfront with vinous characters; pinot blanc grape, crisp apple and floral aromas. There is also a note of bubblegum and bread yeast in the background.

T: Flavour is even bolder, first let me say - yes it has a truckload of sugar. However the sugar is a ruse to hide the alcohol content (8% ABV) without destroying the palate. And what a palate; fusions of grape, apple, bubblegum, pepper and baker's yeast swirling around, a classic Simpsons phrase "It's like there's a party in my mouth and everyone's invited" puts it poignantly.

M: Medium bodied with some champagne fizz that refreshes the palate well.

T: Some might think that Or has too much sugar in it. Those people would be missing the point - you don't criticise a sweet dessert wine for being sweet, neither should you criticise an 8% ABV blond for being sweet, there are very few beers above 8% that you will not find sweet. This brew, along with 3 Monts has shown me that there are some serious players just south of Belgium making some top quality beer. Doubtless they are all from Brasseries, the craft brewers of France, and when I find one these days it's no longer with scorn do I think "From France? Those cheese eating surrender monkeys", but with delight that I think "From France? Those guys that brew as good as the Belgians", thank you Or.

Food match: Some hearty French cuisine would pair well; pommes de terre dauphinoise, boeuf à la Bourguignonne or even a nice grilled filet mignon, with gravy of course.

Drank from my Duvel tulip

A - Pours a clear classic Gold colour with a tight one fingered head that reduces to a film and does not lace

S - (with a cold) Sweetness and grainy malts

T - bits of banana and apple from the yeast. heaps of fruit in this beer. The alcohol content is well hiiden. A little sticky on the finish

M - Light body with medium carbonation.

O - Really liked this one, It tends to lean towards a Belgian Blonde comapred to other De Garde's that I have had. Not to say it isn't a good beer though. Recommend with some Cheese or White sauce based pasta

Served from a 750 ml bottle into a goblet. Bottle was bought in France.

A - Light color on the edge between straw and gold; not much orange color. Crystal clear. Head is pure white; not much on initial pour and only a thin ring around the glass later.

S - Aroma is dominated by a corn-like note. No hops. No malt. Some alcohol booziness, but not much.

T - Flavors are subtle, but nothing bad or offensive. Very low hops flavor; type is indistinct. Hops bitterness is low. Not really any malt flavor except for a faint nuttiness, but the corn is back. No yeast notes. Some white sugar sweetness late in the palate. Alcohol flavor is not evident.

M - Light to medium body. Carbonation is not very high, but there is a carbonic "bite". Some alcohol burn. Finishes dry.

O - A disappointing beer. It is clean and relatively easy to drink, despite the high alcohol content. However, there are no malt or hops to hold it together. I'd much prefer more malt background and an interesting yeast to add character. And hold some of the corn, please.

Bottle: Poured a clear golden color ale with a huge pure white foamy head with good retention and some good lacing. Aroma is unfortunately dominated corn notes which are not really pleasant. Taste is also dominated by loads of corn ester with an overly sweet malt base. Boyd is full with a weird oily texture and good carbonation with no apparent alcohol. This one is a total mess and not something I would look for again.

Bottle from the LCBO, corked and caged 750ml into a tulip. Date on the neck is July 18, 2012 (is this a best before date?)

Pours a perfectly clear gold, with a finger or two of white head. Decent carbonation evident in the body; lacing is webbed but thin and retention is moderate. Nose is gentle, but suggestive of something more along the lines of a Belgian Golden Strong, sweet and a light candied note, a bit of caramel, and light and gentle hopping. Malts are more prominent here. Taste has some gentle grassiness/European hops and thin, crackery/wafery golden malts. Apple/pear flesh. Sweet body and light bitterness and spice in the finish, with a bit of sulphur. Alcohol is present but not substantial. Lighter medium body, with carbonation being quite high and appropriate. Not like a couple other Biere de Gardes than I've had before, and I'd believe you if you had told me this was a Belgian Golden Strong.

750ml into tulip. Picked up at the lcbo by the mrs as a surprise.

A- Crystal clear straw pour. Two finger soapy white head that drops quickly to a thin cap. Lacing just coats the glass.

S- Biscuit and sugar. Apples and grape skins. Slight pepper aroma.

T- Slight metallic taste, slightly sweet, apples and grapes. Sweet biscuits and pepper.

M- Lively carbonation, light bodied.

O- Not bad, I wouldn't consider this a bier de garde. Probably would have been better in smaller serving size.
