Notes/Commercial Description:
Stonefly IPA has been refreshed with the addition of Citra Hops and introduction of a new dry-hopping process we call Alle Zeit Hopfen. A new dry-hopping contraption we custom built called HopfenKubel that we designed to slowly release dry-hops continuously for 48 hours into the fermentation tank. This will allow more surface contact time with the hops and beer fully maximizing the aroma and flavors from the hops. The addition of Citra Hops deliver a spicy, floral, strong citrus and tropical tone of grapefruit, melon, lime, gooseberry, passion fruit and lychee. Stonefly IPA will continue to support the efforts of the Schuylkill Action Network and donate a portion of proceeds to the Berks Watershed Restoration Fund to protect the source waters and health of the Schuylkill River watershed.

A: The beer is murky yellow in color and has some fine particulates visible floating in suspension near the bottom of the glass. It poured with a finger high white head that gradually died down and consistently left a short head covering the surface and lots of lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of citrusy hops are present in the nose—grapefruit seems to stand out in particular.
T: Similar to the smell, the taste is dominated by flavors of grapefruit hops and has a moderate to strong amount of bitterness. Both the grapefruit flavors and bitterness linger through the finish.
M: It feels medium-bodied and somewhat crisp on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This IPA really packs in lots of flavors of fresh grapefruit hops and bitterness, but seems like it could have used a little more crispness and underlying malts.

My bottle backlog here at Chez Woody has caused me to give short shrift to a number of breweries. In some instances, it was because I bought the bottle and then realized that no approved pic existed, so I took a pic, resized it, submitted the pic, set the bottle aside and then got sidetracked awaiting approval. In this case, some of their beers had pics and others did not, but now, all is in readiness!

From the bottle: "From farm to pint our beer is alive! Unpasteurized keep it chilled!"; "A portion of the proceeds of this beer will go towards the protection and restoration of the Schuylkill River and its source waters."

It has been in my kitchen reefer since its arrival, so it is nice and cool, but I wanted to use an initial gentle pour in case any lees had built up. Once I had a sufficient pour, I agitated it in the glass to get a finger of fluffy, tawny head with reasonable retention. Color was a golden-amber (SRM = > 5, < 7) with NE-quality clarity and if I had been able to hold them off earlier, here were Croesus, Mammon and Midas! Nose had the sharpness that I have been noticing in DIPAs of late. Grassy, minty hops with some caramel malt beginning to come through as well. Drool. Mouthfeel was medium, but very effervescent, allowing the hops to really explode on the tongue. This is precisely what I like in an AIPA! It was approachable, not overly done with regard to its alcohol, and allowing both the hops to take charge but also for the malt to follow at a reasonable distance. Finish was dry, but just enough so as not to be gasping.

I have really refined both my love of hops and especially of AIPAs over the years so that I know what I like, and this was it! Not too alcoholic, not so hoppy as to seem like it was saturated, good use of malt to showcase the hops and act as their companion, great color, decent mouthfeel (and honestly, who cares about this outside of RISs?). Why do I mention all of this separate from my review? Check my numbers! This is supposed to be rare.

I'm going on a limb to say this brewer's reinvention of its IPA is a success and I really like this beer, and want to try more.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tulip

A-Dense, rocky lasting, massive head sits atop very hazy amber-orange body. Nice lacing from beginning to end.

S-Bright and fresh. Grapefruit, lemon, pine, and maltiness. Grass, earth, pepper.

T-Sweet first following the smell. Then QUICKLY Bitter hop and a fresh long finish. Very juicy, ala a Sculpin. More west coast than east coast in its new configuration.

MF- Juicy, long finish. Medium body, unfiltered, peppery finish. A bit of alcohol.

O-Must try.

A: A billowy light tan head forms above a canyon clay colored body with a heavy protein haze within. Broken soapy ring lace, faint misty rise of effervesce.

A: Aroma was light to moderate in strength, a bit sub-par in complexity, very sweet caramelized citrus best describes this with a leave of pine hops.

T: The flavor was sweetly toasted specialty grains meeting juicy wet citrus and pine hops. Lightly dry hopped, lemon straw with only a moderate hop bitterness.

M: Light mouthful, lacking in crispness, light carbonation and mildly unexciting.

O: Overall middle of the road offering that lacks stand out features. Malting is decent, a bit heavy handed on the speciality grains, but the hop strength and complexity lacks anything more then entry level appeal.

Appearance is a cloudy light copper with a half finger of head that dissipates quickly. The nose is lightly hoppy as is the flavor. There is also some malt in the flavor profile but not much. Basically, this is a mild IPA – none of the flavors really pop.

I suppose that practically all contemporary brewers feel like they must brew an IPA. As a result, many of them end up pretty forgettable. This is one falls in that category.
