Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Stonefly IPA has been refreshed with the addition of Citra Hops and introduction of a new dry-hopping process we call Alle Zeit Hopfen. A new dry-hopping contraption we custom built called HopfenKubel that we designed to slowly release dry-hops continuously for 48 hours into the fermentation tank. This will allow more surface contact time with the hops and beer fully maximizing the aroma and flavors from the hops. The addition of Citra Hops deliver a spicy, floral, strong citrus and tropical tone of grapefruit, melon, lime, gooseberry, passion fruit and lychee. Stonefly IPA will continue to support the efforts of the Schuylkill Action Network and donate a portion of proceeds to the Berks Watershed Restoration Fund to protect the source waters and health of the Schuylkill River watershed.

No visible bottling date info but the Wegman's pasteover label suggested it arrived at the store Sept. 30th. So it would be at least a month old.

Poured from the 12 oz. bottle into a Lawson's Finest Liquids tulip.

a: Slightly hazy amber with a two inch tall white head which receded to persistent heavy surface foam and dense lacing.

s: Floral, pine and citrus.

t: Follows the nose with medium hop bite over a bready malt base. Rather bitter finish.

m; Medium, good body, plenty of carbonation tingle.

o: An exceptional medium strength IPA, tasty with no shortage of hop bitterness or initial flavor. Inviting durable head and lacing too. Main drawback is the hop flavor fades and bitterness builds. However it is hard to say how old this bottle was when I bought it in a mixed six, and age tends to cause the hop flavors to decline.

Pours a cloudy golden amber with a medium off white head, mild lacing. Aroma and Taste is of floral citrus hops upfront, some grapefruit, yeast and bready notes and mildly fruity, caramel malt. Palate is a medium body, smooth with good carbonation. The finish is sweet caramel malt, yeast and bread notes with some grapefruit citrus and floral hops bitterness. Overall a simply good solid all around IPA.

Very very mild IPA. Lacking the strong hoppy / bitter taste an IPA should have. Taste more like a pale ale. One of the poorest tasting IPA's I have had

IPA is my go to beer. Therefore I have had a lot of good IPA and a lot of want to be brewers that think they can make a name for themselves with a bold and distinctly hoppy tasting IPA. This tasted more like badly brewed pale ale. This is no where close to what an IPA should taste like. In addition I have been to hundreds of brewery's across the country and Saucony Creek Brewing has remained at the bottom of my list.

A: The beer is murky yellow in color and has some fine particulates visible floating in suspension near the bottom of the glass. It poured with a finger high white head that gradually died down and consistently left a short head covering the surface and lots of lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of citrusy hops are present in the nose—grapefruit seems to stand out in particular.
T: Similar to the smell, the taste is dominated by flavors of grapefruit hops and has a moderate to strong amount of bitterness. Both the grapefruit flavors and bitterness linger through the finish.
M: It feels medium-bodied and somewhat crisp on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This IPA really packs in lots of flavors of fresh grapefruit hops and bitterness, but seems like it could have used a little more crispness and underlying malts.

My bottle backlog here at Chez Woody has caused me to give short shrift to a number of breweries. In some instances, it was because I bought the bottle and then realized that no approved pic existed, so I took a pic, resized it, submitted the pic, set the bottle aside and then got sidetracked awaiting approval. In this case, some of their beers had pics and others did not, but now, all is in readiness!

From the bottle: "From farm to pint our beer is alive! Unpasteurized keep it chilled!"; "A portion of the proceeds of this beer will go towards the protection and restoration of the Schuylkill River and its source waters."

It has been in my kitchen reefer since its arrival, so it is nice and cool, but I wanted to use an initial gentle pour in case any lees had built up. Once I had a sufficient pour, I agitated it in the glass to get a finger of fluffy, tawny head with reasonable retention. Color was a golden-amber (SRM = > 5, < 7) with NE-quality clarity and if I had been able to hold them off earlier, here were Croesus, Mammon and Midas! Nose had the sharpness that I have been noticing in DIPAs of late. Grassy, minty hops with some caramel malt beginning to come through as well. Drool. Mouthfeel was medium, but very effervescent, allowing the hops to really explode on the tongue. This is precisely what I like in an AIPA! It was approachable, not overly done with regard to its alcohol, and allowing both the hops to take charge but also for the malt to follow at a reasonable distance. Finish was dry, but just enough so as not to be gasping.

I have really refined both my love of hops and especially of AIPAs over the years so that I know what I like, and this was it! Not too alcoholic, not so hoppy as to seem like it was saturated, good use of malt to showcase the hops and act as their companion, great color, decent mouthfeel (and honestly, who cares about this outside of RISs?). Why do I mention all of this separate from my review? Check my numbers! This is supposed to be rare.
