Stonefly IPA has been refreshed with the addition of Citra Hops and introduction of a new dry-hopping process we call Alle Zeit Hopfen. A new dry-hopping contraption we custom built called HopfenKubel that we designed to slowly release dry-hops continuously for 48 hours into the fermentation tank. This will allow more surface contact time with the hops and beer fully maximizing the aroma and flavors from the hops. The addition of Citra Hops deliver a spicy, floral, strong citrus and tropical tone of grapefruit, melon, lime, gooseberry, passion fruit and lychee. Stonefly IPA will continue to support the efforts of the Schuylkill Action Network and donate a portion of proceeds to the Berks Watershed Restoration Fund to protect the source waters and health of the Schuylkill River watershed.

Average / decent ipa. Normal citrus hop aroma, taste doesn’t have much “pop” to it but is fine, malt is certainly on the chewier side, finish is bitter but nothing abrasive.

Saucony Creek Brewing Co. "Stonefly India Pale Ale"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle without freshness dating
$2 @ Giant, Havertown, PA
Look: Slightly hazy golden body, possibly from dry-hopping. Creamy bright white head that holds well and leaves impressive lacing behind.
Smell: Lightly sweetish grainy malt with gently citrusy, tropical, and softly piney hops. As an American IPA I would expect the aroma to be a bit bolder, but the label doesn't indicate that. On the other hand, as an English IPA it would be remiss in that it's clearly utilizing hops from the American pacific northwest.
Taste: As the aroma indicates it will be, but fuller of course. The citrus, however, remains gentle and not particularly clear although at least orange is upfront, if not grapefruit as well. It's a little bit spicy and peach or apricot-like as well. A solid bitterness anchors it and conquers any sweetness that the malt might have left in it by the time it reaches the finish. Along with bitterness some earthiness, citrus pith, mild fruitiness with a hint of peach, and pine linger.
Feel: Medium bodied with a median carbonation that's gently crisp and then smooth.
Overall: While it doesn't stand out from the great hordes of IPAs on the shelves theses days it's certainly able to maintain it's position within the group. Nicely done. A well balanced and rounded, "solid" IPA.

This was poured into a nonic pint glass. The appearance was a hazy bronzed golden orange with a two finger white foamy head that dissipated within less than a minute. A good amount of white clingy and ringy lacing glazed around the sides of the glass. The smell had a decent citrus to piney hops overcoating a delicate caramel malt. The taste had pretty much the same with a sticky piney aftertaste leading to sticky dry finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a decent sessionability about it. The carbonation was there and the bitterness is there but allows a decent sticky citrus to sharpen and delicately stroll across my tongue. Overall, this was a pretty good AIPA that I would have again. It definitely had a different mouthfeel, but still everything else seemed spot on.

The first one I opened blew up all over the place the second it was popped...It was not mistreated on my watch. Anyway, after cleaning up the mess I might be a bit biased. Rumor of strong citrus and floral aroma with lots of citrus flavors but that does not exist in this one. Maybe this was an old batch, hence the blow up.
Overall there is nothing that stands out here, just a middle of the road IPA. I do appreciate the effort to support restoration of a watershed which would make me more inclined to go back if I was local, but unfortunately its nothing I will actively seek out going forward.

12 oz. bottle poured into a tulip glass.
A--Golden, orange & hazy. Nice white head that left nice lacing.
S--Hoppy & piney, like an IPA should be.
T--Piney & fruity. Nice & hoppy, minimal maltiness.
M--Creamy. plenty of carbonation, not too dry at the end.
O--A good enough IPA. Nothing special, but nothing to turn down either.
