Poured on-tap at the brewery and served in a shaker pint, the beer is a dark brown to black coloring with ruby highlights and a low profile, white, clingy head. Nose of mocha and cream, with roasted highlights. Chocolate and coffee notes, too. Flavors are bitter roast coffee forward, with creamy highlights at the end. Dry, light bodied, with a bitter, roasted aftertaste. The finish is dry, with a subtle bitter coffee and chocolate linger.

This porter is incredible! It has the nice bold feeling of a porter but not too strong. Satisfaction guaranteed for all beer drinkers. With it's IBU at 23, it has the body of an average porter but is smooth enough for anyone. "A midnight hue is complemented by chocolate and coffee aromas. With a creamy head and smooth finish, it stands apart from other porters."

Poured into a Due South Brewing Co. snifter. Unlabeled sample bomber from the brewery.

A- Pours a 99% opaque black color with a 1/4 inch light brown head that retains a bit before becoming a thin ring around the edge of the glass and a tiny center patch of surface foam. Minimal lacing.

S- Strong dark roast aroma brings lots of dark chocolate notes plus some coffee and a bit of nuttiness.

T- Bitter dark roast comes on first with a chocolaty sweet middle and some mild hop flavor in the finish.

M- Thick for a porter, actually bordering on stout territory. Medium carbonation and a full body.

O- I gotta say, I'm quite impressed by this. Porter's a style that has to be done a certain way for me to like it and these guys nailed it. Good and roasty with a mild sweetness to balance and a robust body.

A: Pours an opaque yet still clear jet black in color with light amounts of gentle visible carbonation along the edges of the glass and faint garnet red highlights. The beer has a three finger tall dense foamy mocha colored head that slowly reduces to large finger thick cap in the center surrounded by a thick film covering the remainder of the surface of the beer and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Light to moderate aromas of roasted malts, semi-sweet chocolate, and hints of freshly brewed coffee. Just the most subtle hint of nuttiness as well.

T: Upfront there is a moderate flavor of roasted malts, semi-sweet chocolate, and freshly brewed coffee with a very light amount of sweetness. There is a very light presence of nuttiness towards the finish. Light to moderate amounts of roasty bitterness which lingers for a short while.

M: Just shy of medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Light amounts of dryness in the finish.

O: This is an easy to drink and enjoyable porter - slightly lighter in body than I expected but the flavors and aromas are spot on. Definitely worth grabbing.

A can from my trusty NC trade partner. Tasted 30 January 2015.

Pours black, only a little dark brown at the edges; very dark and opaque for a porter. One finger plus of medium tan head, pretty good retention, not much lacing.

Smell is rich and dark, full of dark chocolate and charred wood. Yum.

Taste is not what I expected. It's pretty sweet, almost like a milk stout, with some fruity character (plums). Very tasty, but an odd match for the smell.

Feel is also unexpected. Much lighter in the mouth than it looks in the glass, with tingly carbonation.

A very nice beer, though it looks and smells like one beer in the glass, but tastes and feels like a totally different one once it hits my mouth.

Now in cans. Pours an inky black, with a nice tan head. One of the best smelling porters in recent memory - nice balance of roast, malt and chocolate. I prefer beers with more body in general, though for a porter this has above-average heft and not too much carbonation. An excellent beer to satisfy dark, roasty urges.
