Die StammKneipe / Der Schwarze Kölner
Die Stammkneipe basically means "the regulars local pub", and I found that to be very true. It's in Fort Greene so it's not very touristy (in comparison), and what I found was basically local friends getting together for a few beers and a snack, although on weekend young families will show up with their kids in tow, which is OK because it's very open (with wide windows open to the street during good weather) and fairly roomy inside. They even have a couch and a foosball table.
It's a nice looking place with a black & white checkerboard tile floor, and wooden, outdoor folding chairs and tables inside. The walls are adorned with interesting "German" beer hall type stuff: mirrors, candles, small barrels, a stag's head, etc.
The beer selection is really pretty good. 18 taps including::
4 weizen: Weihenstephaner, Paulaner, Franziskaner, Erdinger, Schneider, Benediktiner, or Andechser - depending.
4 pils: Jever, Bitburger, Dinkelacker, Einbecker, or Krombacher - depending.
2 lagers: Spaten, Hofbrauhaus, and Weihenstephaner - depending.
3 bocks: Weihenstephaner, Hofbrauhaus, Schneider, and Spaten - depending.
5 specialties: Kölsch, Alt, Zwickl, Berliner Weiße, Radlers.
They also have 29 bottled beers available.
Beyond a great draft selection and atmosphere (which is very comfortable, casual, and relaxing), the food is surprisingly varied compared to some of the other "German" places in Brooklyn that feel a simple wurst or two and a pretzel is authentic. In addition to those, they also offer Pickled Herrings Filet, Strammer Max, Reibekuchen mit Apfelmuss, and Kausler Rippen mit Sauerkraut. With that said, I found the food fairly authentic (but perhaps a little tempered to American tastes), and quite good. I also felt the service was much better than average, and the prices good.
