Bottle: Poured a light clear amber color ale with a medium size foamy head with OK retention and some limited lacing. Aroma consists of wood and whiskey notes are quite dominant. Taste is also dominated by woody notes with dry whiskey notes and light caramelized sugar. Body is light with good carbonation and light warming alcohol. Interesting but actual taste is closer to diluted whiskey than actual scotch ale.

I cellared this form 8 months on top of the brewery aging. It opened with a big pop but not gushing.

Dark opaque toffee brown colour. One inch head of large bubbles that last all the way to the bottom of the glass. Lots of carbonation but not in streams. Thick uniformed lacing with some retention.

Strong scotch whisky aroma. Smokey, peaty single malt. Toffee smell with roasted grains. There is some alcohol in the aroma.

The whisky barrel has given this ale almost all of its taste. Great scotch taste with long, buttery molasses that comes out as a toffee taste. Grassy hops bitterness in the aftertaste.

A full, rich, warmth in the mouth but it is missing carbonation.

Well made scotch ale. It compares favourably with the Founders Backwoods Bastard that I had recently. This is not as overbearing. Canny Man comes close to a very good single malt whisky. I with I had more of this one.

As soon as I undid the cork cage the cork flew into the ceiling and the bottle proceeded to gush, slightly unexpected but hey. Managed to get it into a tulip where there is a moderate amber head, a darkish ruby brown colour, fairly bright with good clarity, nice retention and lacing. 4

S – caramel toffee, peat smoke kilned barley, this doesn’t say it was made with smoked barley but it smells reminiscent of some that are. Some vanilla and barley sweetness. Some woody dark fruits, raisin. Good mix and profile, fair bit of sherry barrel. 4.25

T – a sweet toasty start, then a nice influx of peaty smoke, with a barley note and a subtle wave of dark fruits, cherry, plum, raisin, vanilla, molasses, thick slightly boozey oak. Some intense caramel notes, and toffee, cherry juice, lots of complex scotch oak character that is balanced fairly well but is still a bit on the sweet side from wort caramelization. Drying out on the finish with some upfront woodiness (bit much, like pencil shavings) and a dry aftertaste. 4

M – This has no alcohol presence, a smooth, slightly syrupy body with nice hint. Moderate carbonation which is appropriate, a touch aggressive, and lets the heavier scotch flavours to really tingle on the palate. A bit dry on the finish, with a bit of oaky warmth. 4

A very impressive beer, Im a fan of scotch influenced beers in general and this one takes a definite influence from its Speyside casks alongside a robust and silky peat profile. I found the caramel sweetness to be a bit too dominant but otherwise the balance was quite pleasant and tasty. Yes there is a fair bit of oaky and peaty scotch profile but the beer takes it very nicely, and the barrel aging focuses more on dry resiny dark fruits than vanilla and the peatiness is quite restrained in my opinion (I'm an Islay drinker tho!). The flavor was quite interesting and stays true to what the beer is aiming at, but it has potential to be much more complex. I enjoyed this and it was lovely as it warmed. If you see it, I’d recommend it.

My girlfriend bought this for me in Toronto. From notes.

A - Poured completely cloudy with a sorta rusty brown colour. Two fingers of really creamy off white head on top left minimal spotty lace and a finger of retention.

S - Smokey. That was about it. Later it showed some dark fruit character, but honestly, it just seemed like smoke.

T - Smokey. Way too smokey for mee. Far more smokey than the aroma. Smoke peeled back after a while with the dark fruit again, but it was mostly just smokey campfire and peat smoke.

M - Good carbonation with a medium to full body and a sweet finish with a dryness and smoke.

O/D - Not my cup of tea at all. Since I don't like smoke in beers, it really wasn't worth the time. Thankfully this was a gift, cause I didn't drink half the bottle. Not drinkable for me. Pass.

A I didn't even get the wire off and the cork hits the ceiling almost taking my head off, you've been warned. clear light copper with fast bubbles feeding a well sustained three finger foam that leaves lots of random lace

S peat smoke and cigar ash, nutty toffee and campfire work well, a little booze with just a hint of plum

T more earthy peaty notes and slightly more booze too, caramel apple, wet wood and ashtray tastes better then it sounds but I preferred the nose

M lighter side of medium and a little foamy with faint heat, bruised plum and peat smoke lingers on the finish

O if you like the peat smoke you might like this one, not quite there but heading in the right direction

I'll give some credit to these guys for trying a scotch barreled wee heavy as your their first beer, not bad but could be better but I'll be keeping and eye out for their second brew

LCBO first release from this brewery. Pours brown as tobacco with a forever lasting foam head. Peaty aroma, but that's nothing like the adventure in smoke you take, with ashes and cigar smoke and char thrown in. It grows on me and leaves a handful of mint and spices on the aftertaste. Medium mouthfeel, a bit much on carbonation. Maybe that works for some.

Appearance: dull caramel, slight haze, with orange rounding it out; vigorous hear on pour, but peters out to a thin layer quickly

Aroma: light wisps of peat - fresh not too smoky, more earthy; caramel in background

Taste & Mouthfeel: strong smoke flavour and a good hit of alcohol makes this feel like "Scotch Whisky Lite" - it's almost more like whisky than beer; caramel and some fruit sweetness - peach, orange; some toffee, vanilla; good carbonation and medium body

Overall: the barrel ageing has worked it's magic, infusing smoked peat to just the right amount. However it falls down from there, offering little depth of flavour; perhaps too much reliance on the barrel ageing; it doesn't hold your interest

Reddish copper colour, nearly 2 fingers of off white head, light lace as well here. Smell is very whisky forward, lots of barrel and oak, peat is pretty well in the forefront also, there is some fruity notes here as well, bit of cherry, toasted malts with some caramel and toffee. Taste is basically all peated malt and scotch whisky barrel, salt water and iodine flavours are tough to get past, very faint fruit and brown sugar, mild sweetness, finish has more peat whisky. Medium carbonation, a touch high initially, medium body. Very one dimensional and way too much scotch flavour here, after 8oz. the rest of the 750ml bottle was a drain pour, perhaps a bit ambitious for their first effort.

I don't understand why the brewery bothers wrapping and ornamenting their bottles when they are so pretty and eye-catching in and of themselves. Knowing this was all done painstakingly by hand definitely earns brownie points from this reviewer, though I insist the tall, sleek, black ceramic-looking bottle and dainty label are becoming enough.

Canny Man is almost the same deep amber colour as a well-aged scotch (although denser, especially by the second and third pours which take it a full two or three tones darker, making it looks concerningly thick and muddied). Its head overflows like a freshly picked apple pale, the white foam nearly flowing over the edge of the chalice.

Barrel aging didn't take over the beer but instead has allowed this 'wee' heavy to grow in stature so that the details can be better recognized: buttery toffee, caramel and cream, apple and plum esters, a sizable amount of peat-smoked malt. Despite having a whiskey-and-gingerbread thing going on, there's little barrel interference.

Wood spice, smoke singed baking spices and peat intensify in the flavour. I'm not getting the vanilla the brewery insists on but I do taste dark toffee (likely the added molasses). It tastes like a whiskey and plum infused bread pudding. It has the essence of a good Scottish single malt but is denser, maltier, mellower and dances less intensely on the tongue.

Canny Man would make a really nice Wee Heavy on its own, without the barrel-aging. It has all the right parts: mild kettle caramelization, rich and lightly smoky malt, subtle plum and dried fruit esters. As it warms there's butterscotch offshoots. Of course all of this unfolds well into the earthy peat and smokier notes of the barrels, over which the whole flavour dries out.

The barrel's stint in the finish, however, is relatively short as caramel and bread pudding take over closing duties. There's some alcoholic warmth but it's sewn right into the beer's fabric. The bubbles have a surprising amount of energy considering they were saturated in whiskey for 71 days. Still, despite firm and stable carbonation, the beer has a Willy Nelson-mellow demeanor.

Canny Man is quite the production - importing dozens of barrels from overseas, wrapping each bottle by hand - investors sparred not a dime in this launch. Sheesh, they could have just done a pale ale or an IPA, but good on them for not! This is the kind of beer that is perfect for sharing or else can easily transport you into the late hours of the night. Great either way!
