Pours a clear, dark brown color. 1/4 inch head of an off-white color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of sweet malt, slight hop, hint of roasted malt, and dry hops. Fits the style of an English Brown Ale. Mouth feel is smooth and clean, with a low carbonation level. Tastes of sweet malt, hint of roasted malt, slight dry hop, and hint of hops. Overall, good appearance and feel, simple otherwise, nothing outstanding.

Served From: Bomber
Bottled on Date: 8/14/12

Appearance: Dark brown with two fingers of an off white head with good retention.

Smell: Slightly toasted malt.

Taste: Malty with a hint of bitterness at the finish. Nutty notes throughout. Tastes “brown”.

Mouthfeel: smooth mouthfeel, appropriate amount of carbonation.

Overall: Tastes like I would expect an English style brown ale to taste. Not always my favorite style, but I like this one better than others I've had because it is well balanced. First time trying this brewery, definitely excited to try more of their offerings.

On tap at the brewpub, 10/18/11.

A-Pours a rich ruby amber with a small off white head.

S-Nice breadiness, light hops.

T-Rich malt, toasty with caramel sweetness and light citrus hops.

M-Medium bodied, pleasant rich flavor.

O-A nice beer. I was disappointed that I drove all the way out to the Drafthouse to find no seasonals and no IPA. This was an ok substitute though.

Red Hydrant Amber Red had an excellent color and a good mouthfeel, the aroma was very malty. The flavor at the beginning was smoky and interesting with a bit of molasses taste but the after taste was flat and a little too bitter. Overall for me this was an average beer, I've had far better Amber Red's than this one and in my opinion not the best that Big Dog has to offer. That being said I still found this beer to still be pretty drinkable and it did match up with pub style food very well. All in all it's at least worth trying if you like Amber Red's.

Served in a pint glass at the Draft House.

A - Translucent reddish brown hue with a 2 finger head. Retention was decent for a Red, lacing was mostly nonexistent, although that may be attributed to the recently washed glass.

S - Sweet smell of caramel and toffee, and something akin to fresh toast.

T - Rich, malty presence, but not very complex. Mildly sweet with a clean finish.

M - Clean, crisp, slightly watery. Sharp carbonation.

D - Surprisingly drinkable. It won't knock you out of your socks, but it is a great brew to have on hand during a good conversation.

Poured on-tap at the Ale House into a pint glass. The beer has a great coloring of vibrant auburn-reds, with a decent foamy head. Unfortunately, it is downhill from the appearance. The flavor of the beer is bland, with sour and malt undertones. The beer has a lingering film on finish, with a slightly sweet aftertaste. Not a beer I would order again.
