Consumed 05/10/08 at Big Dog's Bar and Grill.
Nearly opaque - black. Can't pick up any highlights in the subdued light of the establishment.
An uber-smooth, dense, creamy tan head courtesy of our friend nitrogen. Yes, we actually did draw a clover in it to see if we could.
Aroma is delicious: sweet, dark roasted malt with some raisin notes.
Flavor is sublime; robust chocolate that's balanced between sweet and bitter with more of those complimentary raisin notes. Almost a malted milk aftertaste with a touch of some kind of wood. Texture is smoother and creamier than any mortal deserves.
Big Dog is my hero for bringing me this sweet gift.

I had this on tap at the draft house in Las Vegas, NV. It was dark black-brown in color with some red tints. It had a long lasting creamy tan foamy head. It had a nice smell of some malt, but not too strong. The main taste I detected was of coffee, with not too much roast or chocolate taste.

nitro poured, jet black with a thick creamy head. simply awesome looking. the nose has some light coffee notes with some sweet malt, faint but pleasing. the taste is where its at, big coffee bill, dark chocolates all over, sweet cocoa, vanilla bean, roasty malt and a light hop bitterness. finishes slightly sweet. creamy in the mouth but not overly so (think guinness). milky, silky and smooth. a wonderful stout that looks great, feels great in the mouth and delivers with a intense semi sweet coffee/vanilla/chocolate explosion. how hyped am i this is local? VERY HYPED. awesome brew.

Notes taken from a vacation May '11...
A- Color was of black motor oil with a cappucino colored head....and it was very dense with about two fingers of foamy goodness! It retained very well, settling to a thick froathy layer, that resembled the look of a nitro tap. There was perfect thick lacing that stuck to the side of the glass. A perfect looking stout overall I had to say!
S- Sweet, yet traditional smelling stout aromas were found here....dry toasty aromas of chocolate malt, aromatic coffee bean, and a nice dry unsweetened cocoa smell. The sweetness seems to be derived from a hint of brown sugar/mollasses.
T- More of the same, but with slightly more dominance. There was a dominant dark chocolate flavor with hints of coffee in behind. This was countered by the aforementioned hint of brown sugar. The finish had a slightly dry earthy character that tidies up the flavor profile nicely.
M- Smooth medium/full body that reminded me of drinking a chocolate infused coffee. Carbonation was very fine, providing a very richly flavored creamy stout.
O- I didn't find this as filling as other stouts that I've tried, yet it had a somewhat chewy character. Also, I didn't find this as sweet as other Milk Stouts by comparison either. I had this with the BBQ Pulled Pork Pizza, and what a great combo that was! Even without a meal, this is an excellent stout to enjoy on it's own and would be a perfect sit down, let the day go by, type of brew!

Served in a pint glass at Big Dog's in Las Vegas.
A - Beautiful brew! Dark, thick, cloudy head, excellent lacing. The head sat gently on top all the way down.
S - Roasted fireplace-type aroma. Would score higher here but it almost smelled burnt if that makes any sense.
T - Sweet and thick. I could almost chew it. Slightly spicy with a nice bitterness to balance it out.
M - Creamy body with a mildly dry finish.
D - Outstanding. I'd definitely recommend making a trip to the Draft House is only to try this beer. Probably my favorite offering from Big Dog's.

On nitro at Pizza Port Carlsbad
A: The pour is a nice dark brown with the usual creamy, off-white head from the nitro pour.
S: The nose is chocolatey (primarily dark chocolate) with some hints of coffee and roasted malt. Perhaps a bit of molasses in there as well.
T: The flavor is not quite as muted as you often find with beers served on nitrogen. Good roast and smooth, creamy chocolate flavor. The coffee is subtle and in the background.
M: The mouthfeel is also quite creamy, though a bit watery at times.
D: A nice stout from a brewery that I had never heard of/had any beers from before. I wouldn't mind having a glass of this one again.

Black in color with a thick tan head that lasts through the whole drink. Nice lacing with this one. The aroma was pleasant as roasted malt and coffee filled the nose. The flavor rocked, as the roasted malt, coffee, and hint of bitter chocolate were well balanced. Some very faint hops rounded it out.
The mouthfeel was smooth and creamy. Heavier bodied. The coffee and roasted flavors last long on the tongue after swallowing. This is the best brew I sampled during my trip to Big Dog's.

Presentation: Sampled on draft at Big Dogs Brewing Co./Draft House as part of a Sampler during a visit with fellow BA UncleJimbo.
Listed on the large wall sign that has the names of some 12 or so house brews as Black Lab Stout.
Appearance: Served on Nitro-Tap it obviously benefits from good conditioning and head retention. Smooth tan had that lasts and sits proudly atop the dark mass body. Looks great, even in a sampler.
Nose: Lots of sweet roasted malts mixed in with a nice warming coffee finish. Some dark chocolate too.
Taste: Lots of roasted malts that are sweet to start with, slowly they meld with a dark chocolate middle that rises with a nice coffee finish. Mild bitterness with a charming roasted coffee finish that lingers. A very attractive Stout.
Mouthfeel: Smooth, thick yet wholesome and rich. Lovely silky body that bolsters the already great flavor profile, the taste and mouthfeel in the Black Lab Stout make a great double act.
Drinkability: Easily partaken, smooth, silky and very tasty. A bold but not heavy Stout that has a very attractive quaffability. Likeable.
Overall: Another great brew from Big Dogs Brewing / Draft House, I love the hefty bold mouthfeel and the superb roasted malt through coffee profile which work well with the delicate bitterness. Recommended.

Another brew from my buddy Dave from LV.
Pours a very nice dark brown color, nice carbonation, very thin/tiny tan head, with some sticky lacing left behind. The nose is very nice and malty, with some very nice coffee/toffee notes, mostly toffee, some dark chocolate as well. The taste is malty, with the very nice dark stuff, slightly bitter/dry. Medium body. Very drinkable, this is a very tasty brew.

This came with a nice black pour, and a pleasant creamy beige nitro like head. Some ruby edges to it and a mils smell of roasty malt and taste as well. I found it thin bodied and flavored, but overall decent. Certainly not as enjoyable as the 88th % indicates, I thought.

Sampled on nitrogen tap at the brewpub. This stout grew on me.
This cream stout poured an opaque black color with creamy tan foam that persisted very well and coated the glass. The smell was rich and malty with some notes of coffee. The taste was tangy with a coffee sweetness up front followed by a bitterness and finished with a sweet, milky flavor with a bit of cocoa. The mouthfeel was smooth and creamy with full body and low carbonation. The initial taste/feel was almost sour, but after a few sips this was no longer noticeable. The was a very drinkable and enjoyable stout which grew on me.

A- deep brown brew with a milky, one finger tan head, good retention and attractive lacing
S- sweet with roasted and chocolate malts
T- milky and creamy malt sweetness makes up main flavors with roasted malts in the aftertaste, chocolate malts around the edges and hints of burnt malts
M- creamy and smooth
D- sweeter than an Irish dry but its served on nitro and just as creamy as an Irish was the roasted malt flavor/scent to match. mellow and drinkable, much better than the easier stuff to find.

Sample at the Rancho Dr brewpub. This beer is a dark brown color with a thin and creamy beige head that dissipates steadily. Sheet of lacing. Light malt and roasted coffee aroma. Medium, smooth body with flavors of sweet malt, roasted coffee and subtle hops. The finish is watery and short with roasted malt and cocoa flavor falling off quickly. Below average overall.
