Stop # 2 on Ron's Beer and Baseball Vegas Adventure - May 19, 2005
Far from the glitz of the strip, Big Dog Drafting House is a very inviting old barn style pub. Nice change from the glow of downtown. Not sure if this is bus-able like Chicago, as I abandoned my mass transit plan after Stop # 1, and I left my notes in Vegas (along with my gambling money).
Inside it's a rustic atmosphere, belied a bit by the stainless steel tanks visible to the left as you enter the bar. Its Old West / hunting lodge / sports bar rolled into one. I deduce that the owner is from Wisconsin since the sports part of the motif is dedicated to the Green Bay Packers and University of Wisconsin Badgers.
There is a small dining section just off the bar (U of W), which then opens into a larger dining room (Old West). The larger dining room does give off an acceptable "family" atmosphere. The men's rest room off the bar is clean and features attractive dark tile.
The bar itself is enormous, and features plenty of tvs above, and plenty of video poker games embedded in the bartop. There's no escape from the siren call. Bar is full service, and regretably includes "guest beers" of the sort that many of us frequent brewpubs to avoid. Still, there are a dozen house beers, each with a Lab on its tap handle.
The bars run a decent size spectrum, from light to barleywine, and includes a belgian white and a strawberry cream ale. Unfortunately for me, both the regular and double IPAs had kicked. I did enjoy a respectable Pale Ale, a nice stout, and my fav of the day, Chocolate Lab Porter. In addition, a few sample sips of the barleywine were quite tasty.
Regrettably, still full from lunch, i failed to even look at the menu. Next time.
The barmaid was attentive, but considering the sheer size of the bar and the ever increasing afternoon patrons, a second bartender would not have been out of the question by mid-afternoon. There must be two on by six o'clock at any rate.
Definitely worth an excursion off the strip when visiting Vegas.

Got to go to this location as the Cafe & Casino location on West Sahara near where I was staying in Vegas was closed for renovations. This is the Main Brewery and is readily accessible from anywhere in Vegas. Tried several of their brews but the one that captured my fancy and would have gotten a Blue Ribbon in a judging was their Lake Mead Monster Imperial Red 9.0 ABV ! This is a style that I really like but is rarely found. Made my visit. Will definitely go back.

Fairly typical brew pub. Around 15 taps with most of them being their own brews. A couple of guest taps but nothing I was interested in.
Tried the Dirty Dog which was a solid IPA. The Calrsbad IIPA which was outstanding and the Sled Dog Imperial Stout which was one of the 5 best non-BA stouts I have ever tried.
The food was average pub fare. Nothing special.
Service was good, but the waitress had to double check most beer related questions with the barkeep.

I will not visit this place again and never say anything good about it or their beers, matter of fact I will not visit Vegas again, the place sucks. Even the Vegas BAs are assholes, they say one thing and do another.
Well I found out today that the Sled Dog was on nitro, that is why my growler was flat as hell. No one at Big Dogs mentioned this, it was not even on the board that list's there beers on-tap. If the server mentioned this when I was purchasing growlers I would never had bought one. Hell it should have even been mentioned that it was on nitro that day I had the glass (Monday 9 Jun 14). Here in Utah most places if not all will not even sell you a growler if the beer is nitro or cask. That growler at Big Dogs should not have been sold to me. I'm waiting for Dave the brewmaster to call me back to see how we can remedy this situation.
Well after my 6/11/14 vist, the growler of Sled Dog I brought home was nothing, I mean nothing like the brew I had 2 days earlier, flat, no carbonation, a BIG disappointment. So because of that I'm changing my review of this place. Sorry, but this is un-acceptable.
Well, I finally got over to Big Dog's last Friday. I dealt mostly with Nancy and I got to meet Dave (Brewmaster), both very nice people. I got the Father's Day Gift Set and left with 3 growlers and had 2 brew's from on-tap. AWESOME brews! I also had a Pastrami omeltte breakfast which was very good, never had one of those before. Very good food and the service was excellent. Meet a couple of nice people while I was drinking. The place is pretty big, freakn' slot machines all over the place, and they still do let people smoke inside, I don't care for that at all, but when I was there, there were not that many smokers. I will be visting again, especially if they have some new beers I have not tried out yet. Highly Recommend!

This is hands down the best brewery in Las Vegas. The food always pairs well with beer drinking. Light or heavy. I highly recommend the Bratzel Burger and a Dirty Dog IPA. Great cheeseburger, brat, bacon on a pretzel bun. The Dirty Dog is a classic "west coast" IPA.
I have had several other beers there and most of the time I am COMPLETELY satisfied. They usually have great guest taps (Lagunitas, Ballast Point, Stone, Deschutes, etc.) and local breweries (Tenaya Creek, Triple 7s) on tap as well.
When in Vegas this is a MUST visit. I always get 2-3 growlers of their brews to take back to L.A. Love this place. Cheers!

I couldn't sleep yesterday morning and at the same time I had an urge for Chicken Fried Steak, and a few pints of course, its Vegas.
So I decided on Big Dog on Rancho. Its been years since I have been here. The atmosphere is like a farmhouse inside and a little like a barn on the outside. Its Vegas so smoking is allowed in the bar but at this hour there were three other customers and none were smoking.
For beer I started with something light, the Leglifter Lite, good lite micro beer, something one could drink a bunch of.Next was the Holy Cow Pale Ale, a very good Pale Ale.
The Chicken Fried Steak was very good but expensive $11. Every 24/7 sports bar in Vegas has this item on the menu and prices range from$5.95 to this price. The menu is sort of Wisconsin based, cheese curds, brats etc.
