Heady, over-ripe, mushy bartlett pear fragrances are obvious from arm's reach. The color is orange, yellow and bronze with a substantial, cream-colored head. Tons of fermenting pear fruit to this beer complete with seeds and doughy, wheaty, dried herb-infused slate nuances.
The texture is rich, with vanilla and chai notes sprinkled across an improbably dry frame of soft wood, orange candy, ginger and cream. Wow! Olivier Humbrecht-like skill here. Stubborn greatness. This beer takes no prisoners and doesn't stand criticism well. Utterly uncompromising.
My first Alt was a brand called "Hannen," which was better than Ganter products, but second choice to anything by Rothaus. Hannen was mocha-flavored, thin-bodied and brown. This is better and 180 degrees different. (774 characters)

A foamy white head sits atop this yellow munster alt. A bit paler than I had envisioned. The head doesn't last long.

Very floral notes are present and a nice earthy aroma.

Sweet and delicate in the flavor. More floral and straw characteristcs. Simply refreshing and delicious. Crisp and light in character. Finishes fairly dry. There is a left over floral and sweet taste.

This is awesome! I have only had a few sips and I'm in love. A great alt and I wish I could get this more often. (488 characters)

Münster Alt pours clean cloudy gold with a 2” off white foam cap that fairly quickly drops to a tinny hillock that leaves lines of lace with each drink. Floral aromas join light fruit and grain on the nose. The palate starts with a hint of sweetness and finishes dry with a little fruity tartness. Light grains form the backbone. Medium body and medium low carbonation. Very easy to drink and very refreshing. (412 characters)

appearance; lighter colored then some Altbier, straw yellow with the slightest bit of cloudyness. Intricate lacing as a beautiful head retreats at a moderate speed.

smell; malty and some fruit and honey, slightest bit of floral hops as well.

taste; Hops are almost absent, just some floral flavors but slight. Very noticeable fruity malts, that linger into the aftertaste and turn almost toasty and warm. Some grape-like tartness like a Kölsch, but then is quickly neutralized by the malts. This is very solid with the malts, without being sweet, that's what I expect from this style....well done! Great aftertaste!

mouthfeel; Loose and smooth, with weak carbonation, certainly not flat though, nothing special just quality.

drinkability; smooth, light, and tasty, one could drink all night and day. (804 characters)

From bottle to snifter. About one finger white, fizzy head. Shorter retention and no film remaining. Light golden color. Bright fruits on nose, and quite aromatic. Red apple, pear, white grapes (actually kind of reminds me of a Riesling), honey and a wink of apricot. Tastes a little bit tart, but not nearly puckering, and lingers through finish. All flavors from aroma are present, with vinous flavors being the strongest, at least to me. Lower carbonation, and medium bodied. Very lightly syrupy. Bit of metallic feel. Overall, delicious. I wonder if perhaps mine was a little bit skunked from reading other reviews, but I still found it very enjoyable. Favorite part was aroma. Will buy again. I think I paid $3.50 for a 500mL bottle. (738 characters)

Great classic (easily recognizable) label. Pours a golden yellow with a slight haze. Foamy head on top has some sparse lacing that does hang around quite a bit.

Aroma is a bit of corn grain and some slightly skunked noble hop twang.

Flavor is very complex for such an innocent looking beer. Some floral sweetness...especially honeysuckle, crisp hops (slight metallic), and some light apple or pear flavors. A slight spice is in here too, maybe chai tea or clove, but its pretty mild.

I like this brew a lot. A bit light in color for the Alt style, but otherwise great. This brew was quite a surprise for me, very flavorful and full bodied for such a light lager. Great subtly and smooth mouthfeel.
Incredible drinkability! (728 characters)

The beer poured a hazy golden color that produced a very nice, fluffy, white head that was retained very well and settled into a thin cap that lasted throughout the beer. Excellent presentation.

The beer produced a nice grainy aroma with a nice compliment of yeast. Pretty much as expected, but I was hoping for a slightly stronger aroma.

The taste of the beer is excellent; a grainy taste with a slight hop bitterness and some of the yeast baked in as well, but the beer leaves a nice grainy/sweet aftertaste. There was nothing in this beer that was overpowering, just a good solid taste.

The beer had a medium body to it, with a clean, crisp feel, which made the beer extremely easy to drink. Overall, this is a world-glass beer and one that I will enjoy often. (766 characters)

Pours a dark gold color (lighter than many alts i've had). Small white head, very sticky on the side of the glass. Smell is sweet and grainy, very earthy and pungent. Alcohol is present in the smell, but it tastes stronger than it is. Biscuity yeast and earthy. A very unique beer, i can't really compare it with anything else. (327 characters)

Appearance: Cloudy, golden color, thin white head that retains well, noticable carbonation.

Smell: Earthy yeast smell, grainy and kind of sour, barnyard hay, very prominant on the nose.

Taste: Similar to the nose, grainy, earthy, tangy, a little sour and bitter on the finish, remind me of a wheat beer, but more complex.

Mouthfeel: Mouthfeel is juicy, medium to light in body, easy to drink. Went well with my kiebasa and sauerkraut sandwich. (446 characters)

Beautiful label designed by Charlie Finkel.

The Pinkus Muller Munster Alt is certainly different than the altbiers common to Dusseldorf. It's yellow-gold in color; with a frothy head of bright-white foam that holds quite well, slowly drops to a creamy cap, and leaves wide rings of sticky lace about the glass with each sip.

The nose offers fresh, sweet, and grainy malt.

In the mouth its gently effervescent carbonation bristles the tongue before it warms to become somewhat creamy, displaying its medium body.

The flavor is much as the nose suggests, with its lightly sweetish and very subtly tart malt dominating. Some hops and a bit of very low key yeasty fruitiness come into play; and it's grassy, slightly doughy, and very mildly bitter with an underlying acidity that also helps to balance it.

This is a great, easy drinking, refreshing, and mildly complex beer that would be perfect in a wide variety of situations; and one that would pair easily with an even greater selection of foods. Quite nice! (1,025 characters)

Odd -- light yellow-gold, slightly hazed, carbonation desperately clings to the sides of the glass. Highly herbal quality to the aroma. Grainy aromas. Light notes of lemon grass. Medium-bodied, feels a bit like a dense, unsweetened cake. Grassy hops. Slightly astringent feel to the aftertaste. Simply a spectacular beer to drink. It isn't the most exciting or most flavorful or most aromatic brew you'll ever have, but it's tasteful simplicity and drinkability make it a great beer. (483 characters)

This is light but tasty, with a firm character, a little complexity, and high drinkability.

Slightly hazy straw-gold, it has a medium white head steadily shrinking to a thin foamy ring and a little weak lace.

Aroma is fully fruity grain, herbs, bread, apple, pear, yeast - a bit like a Belgian blonde/pale ale crossed with a helles bier.

Taste is similar, light, crisp, but with a solid, firm character and a little complexity well-rounded. It is strong, fruity grain, yeasty-tangy bread dough, mineral, light herbs, hay, light pear and apple. It finishes with a mineral-lemony dryness, slightly yeasty-lemony-earthy tartness, before a slightly sweeter, lingering aftertaste of grain. (688 characters)

Travelled a long way to visit the brewery - and it was worth it (Munster is a great town and Pinkus a great brewery).

Everything says lager about this beer until it hits the back of the palate. A nice fruitiness, slight tartness and a general depth of flavour and complexity emerges from this beer. From the brewmasters mouth, its a simple pils base, with an alt yeast and some PH manipulations to get some tartness.

Top beer, very very drinkable. (449 characters)

Poured from bottle into stange. (Warning: don't serve this too warm, or you will get lots of foam!)

A: Clear straw color with a copious head that faded with nice lacing.

S: Earthy, grass with a hint of noble hops.

T: Classic altbier. Crisp, tart, and refreshing. Sharp bite up front gives way to a malty center. The finish is grainy and hoppy together.

M: Rather light in body with massive carbonation that cut through the fat in the meal I was having it with.

D: When you're in the mood for an alt, this is one to reach for. (532 characters)

Poured from a bottle into an arrogant bastard glass. Beer is dark yellow / light brown. Smell is wheaty but no hop character. Carbonation / head was large to begin with and fell away quickly, carbonation persists through the life of the beer. Taste is great, wheaty, nice, not hoppy. Mouthfeel is full, drinkability is high. Pinkus is a great brewery and they produce excellent beers. This is one of the best they produce. Check it out if you get a chance. (456 characters)

Presentation: Sleek brown euro style 17 oz bottle with no freshness date.

Appearance: Puffy cloud like white head floats on top of a hazy pale golden brew.

Smell: A bit raw and earthy with yeast, grain and a mild tartness in the nose.

Taste: Medium bodied with a crisp and chewy malt mouth feel. Lots of malt on the tongue with a very rounded grainy undertone. Hop bitterness is slightly assertive leaving a sweet herbal flavour in its path. Mild tart twang from the hops and yeast in the background from start to finish. More sweet grain and a long lasting grain taste make up the finish.

Notes: Brewed in the classic Alt style, lighter in colour though still retaining a sturdy malt backbone. (706 characters)

500 mL bottle,

A: Pours a cloudy yellow with a light white head, no real lace, looks like a hefeweizen.

S: Classic German malt smell, bock like a 180 from what I was expected due to the colour. Smells like Alt. Nice minerality.

T: Pilsner malt, with a nice tartness bringing notes of lemon and hard water. Nice flavour, unique for the style.

M: Crisp mouthfeel with carbonation that just dances on the palate makes this beer very refreshing, in this aspect it reminds me a bit of Berliner Weisse.

D: Pinkus has brought a smorgasboard of German beer styles together and created a fantastic ale. This would make a great beer for the summertime. (647 characters)

A: Mildly hazy honey colored (soft yellow-orange). Slowly recessing foam with large chunky bubbles, Two fingers tall when poured into a 1L mug.

S: Honey, white bread and honey malt aroma

T: grainy with a bread crust vibe. a bit of fruity, sweetness maybe from the ale yeast? earthy spice hop after taste.

M: moderate body and carb. very smooth

O: A very drinkable bier. My first Alt that wan't a Homebrew and it was much different then I expected. I could easily drink a Liter of this on a warm day, and to me thats a sign of a good German beer. (549 characters)

Served from .5 liter bottle without freshness date.

Poured a somewhat hazy golden amber with big, peaky white head and slight lace. Smells rather grainy and fruity; citrus and banana on a lightly toasted and wheaty malt base. Flavor is a continuing interplay of earthy grains with banana sweetness, finishing very pleasingly dry and tart. Nicely carbonated medium-weight body.

An unusual, but satisfying beer. The initial flavors are what you'd expect from an Alt, while the finish is saison-like; surprisingly tart and full of citrus. (541 characters)

Pours a hazy golden brew.

Smell is light and very fruity; fruity to the point that it approaches the level of a Belgian brew. There is an apples and peaches scent to this.

Taste is mild malts and fruit, with some husky grain thrown in. The hops in this create a mild almost tea tannin level bitter finish that is quite nice.

Mouthfeel is good.

A super drinkable brew, I like Alt Biers, this is the best one I have had yet. (434 characters)

Poured from a 16.9 ounce Euro-brown bottle into a sampler. A moderate pour produces about 1/2 inch of a frothy, snow white head. The beer is a hazy pale golden with high carbonation. The color is surprisingly pale.

Wow. This is unique and different (and very tasty). The aroma is so unique that I can hardly describe it, but it is very nice. Delicate hop flavor-aromas are evident, producing hints of citrus and candy-like pale malts- pineapple comes to mind. I think the uniqueness that I can't quite describe might be from mineral water, yeast, or a combination of the two. A little bit of pleasant tartness is evident in the aftertaste. The brew feels tingly on the tongue and produces plenty of pleasant burpiness.

I bought this bottle for $3.29 at Front Street Market in Butte, Montana. This beer is a very reasonably priced treat, and I must extend kudos to my favorite local beer outlet. I've noticed a few of these German imports that are a very good value. Prost! (974 characters)

500 ml bottle poured into a wiezen glass, the Organic Münster Alt is clear gold with a small white head that leaves scattered lace.

Smell is sweet and thick, flowers, sugar and

Taste is pretty good, nice sweet malt but clean, almost more like a belgian pale ale, not at all cloying or overly sweet as the nose might sugguest. I've never had an alt beer that I can remember, and though I expected this to be yellow when I bought it, I see BA cites the style is more brown ale.

Mouthfeel is on the crisper, dry side, but very smooth.

Drinkability is really pretty good for me, a tasty german blonde. (606 characters)

A: Pinkus Alt is deep amber in color with a slight haze, and decorated with healthy lacing and a frothy white head.

S: This beer smells like a mash-tun, rich with grainy goodness. The honey and grain aromas are rich, bold, and let you know that you are about to enjoy a malty treat.

T: As the nose promises, This beer is saturated with flavors of raw barley, wheat, and oatmeal, topped off with a dose of honey to sweeten the deal.

M: Medium in body, carbonation, and chewiness.

D: This is a delightful, readily available Altbier that delivers the goods. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to get to know German beer. (634 characters)

I had this beer at Mr. Moto's in Burlington IA, poured from a standard German 0.5L bottle. The beer was much lighter in color than I expected for an Altbier, it was crystal clear and golden colored. The aroma was malty, a little like a muted wort smell, very promising. The flavor was almost all malts, slightly sweet, nothing offensive but nothing too strong either. Very easy for a variety of palates I would guess, almost like a strong Kolsch. Very nice sessionable beer. (474 characters)

.5L, Germany, best by Oct. 2011.

Pours a clear, light gold with a fizzy head. Decent retention; tiny bit of lacing.

Aroma is interesting for the style. Lots of tangy, ripe fruit -- almost like a wheat beer -- and a good dose of biscuits and grain.

Pinkus Original is brewed to the "Alt" style, but it's completely different from Düsseldorfer Alt, which is more of a brown ale. The flavor is lightly tart and grainy, almost like an amalgamation of Exportbier, Weissbier and Kölsch. Let me explain: this interesting brew combines the grainy maltiness of an Export, the fruity tartness of a old-style Weisse, and the German "aleness," if you will, of a Kölsch. Tangy hop character adds some depth and bitterness. The mouthfeel is light and soda-like, but with relatively creamy carbonation. Finish was a tad too grainy.

At first I wasn't too keen on this stuff (probably because I was expecting a typical Alt) but then I realized how unique and drinkable it is. Unlike any other German ale I've sampled. (1,007 characters)
