Picked up a 17oz bottle from my RT 8 Giant Eagle for $2.30.

A - Color is a nice hazy yellow, almost orange with a 1/2 inch of bubbly white head.

S - Tons of lemon and grass with some grains and a touch of caramel like sweetness.

T - On the palate it's sweet and grainy and to me almost has a sour apple like note mid palate. The finish has some hops and a sweet caramel malt.

M - Light to medium a good beer.

Overall this is a great German Alt. If I ever go back I will have to pick up the pils.

500 mL brown bottle with no freshness code on it. Pours a mostly clear light gold color with a full three-fingers worth of fluffy white foam. Retention is excellent, as is the lacing. A bit lighter in color than expected, but it is a really good looking beer.

Smell is grainy and rye bread maltiness with a fair shot of grassy hops (Hallertau?). Malts continue to develop as it warms into some nice sweet caramel and toffee notes. Pretty big nose for an alt.

This is a pretty refreshing and tasty brew. The malts are slightly sweet and crackery. Hops provide enough balance and even a bit of hay-like grass flavors. Mouthfeel is a touch on the thin side and it is not exactly a complex beer, but its a nice drinker that I wish was cheaper and sold in six-packs. A good sessionable beer.

Great looking glass of beer, tall and thick white head just over an inch high, golden straw yellow body, head settles slowly to a thick hazy foam, lace sticks amazingly well in clumpy patches. Aroma is lightly malty sweet and fruity, kinda like sourdough bread and eggs, notes of vanilla, almond, and strawberry. An inticing nose, but lightly so. Taste is mild, some short lived bready sweetness, lightly fruity with strawberry and honeydew, subdued tangyness, malts are quite sweet and frothy fresh. Takes a bit of getting use to, but once it settles in and warms up some it ain't half bad. Feel is close to medium, carbonation is pretty full and raspy in texture with a full on sweetness sticking around long after each sip. A strange, sweetly fruity brew, a bit enjoyable, but I think I'd rather be drinkin' something else.

Aroma is strong and malty with fruity undertone, banana and a little apple. Pours a clear golden amber with a fairly thick and fluffy white head. Flavor is a bit thin but not bad - malty with a hint of bananas and just a whisper of sweetness. Texture is jazzy and lively. Not outstanding, but not too shabby.

A: Slightly hazy golden/blond color. Poured a 2 finger coarse, stark white head with good retention. Thick lacing clung to the glass.

S: Delightful fruity presence; orange and grapes. Bitter crispness tickles the nose.

T: Opens with a light malty sweetness. Fruit flavors came through int he middle. Bitter finish gave a bit of crispness, but some lingering sweetness.

M: Light side of medium body. ied, but substantial enough. Decent carbonation but not sufficient; seemed a little flat.

D: Very smooth and pretty flavorful. Goes down real easy; crisp and dry. I only had one bottle, but easily sessionable.

Appearance – This one poured a brilliant yellow in color with some nice orangish-brown tints. It’s a deep, glowing yellowish-orange-brown, really. The head was magnificent. It puffed up nicely and showed good retention, clinging to the inside of my glass as it dissipated.

Smell – The sweet grainy aroma was terrific. It was very musty and well-complimented with some light hopping and huge sugars. The sugars were more orangy than caramely like one would think for the style, but the nose was a winner regardless.

Taste – The orange flavor really took over at the taste, spoiling what looked to be a solid 4.5 Altbier. There was a hint of caramel in the malts but mostly the Orange Crush dominated.

Mouthfeel – This one is light-bodied and completely overboard on the orangy sugar. I like the light carbonation though.

Drinkability – This isn’t a bad drinking Altbier, just not up to snuff for the style. It will go good with lighter food, but don’t pair it with bratwurst und brotchen. I had it with a spinach fruit salad and it was fine.

16oz bottle, pours super pale gold, super clear, topped with a fizzy white head that holds decent retention and leaves some lacing on the glass. Aromas are grassy, biscuity, fresh, grape juice, apple juice. Tastes are crisp, very dry, tart, white grape, chardonnay, apple juice, grassy, delicate noble hops. Mouth-feel is thin and bubbly, finishes dry. Overall, this is different than any other altbier I've had. Definitely sessionable, but not for the price. I probably wouldn't get this one again.

Presentation: A nice 500ml tall brown glass bottle with a very traditional looking, old Teutonic style red label. On the neck there is a much simpler white rectangular sticker with the word “Organic” – it almost looks as if this was stuck on as an afterthought, maybe it was. Imported by Merchant du Vin, and I paid $2.49 for this.

Appearance: A very cloudy golden color, with milky hints. Massive cloud like white head when poured, that threatened to run a mock. Laces with a smattered look at first, this lace slides down the clean glass back into the beer I noted later.

Nose: Wheat mixed with an earthy herbal and a soft yeasty aspect.

Taste: Grainy malts are very perceptible in the beginning. Biscuit grain transposes to a mix of fresh fruits with some yeast. Has a very “Pilsner” mix of malt and hops in the finish. It also has a very short lived, but clearly acidic tartness in the finish that seems to rapidly “spike” just after you swallow this beer. Lingering grain malts & a light bitterness in the ending.

Mouthfeel: Above average feel, the high carbonation assists in giving this beer a solid feel. Very nice and crisp drinking.

Drinkability: Well above average, but not a beer I would want more than say two Pints (US or UK) of. It was quite easy to mark this one, a very clear cut case of a 3.5.

Overall: Different, dare I suggest that it does indeed taste “Organic”. Maybe it sounds stupid, but it does a very natural earthy aspect to it, which for me dampens the overall appeal of the beer a little.

A: Straw gold liquid with a big puffy white head.

S: Fruity malt without any hop character that I can distinguish. Some vinous yeasty notes.

T: Lots of fruity grain flavor. Mild apricots are somehow brought forth from malted barley. It has the meticulous attention to grain that you find in German beers. It just doesn't draw me in as much as the best of them.

M: Pretty good mouthfeel. It's a touch thin but fresh and crisp on the palate.

D: Interesting but not incredible. It's a surprisingly solid beer, but I can't say that I'll necessarily buy another bottle.

Think I got a bad bottle. Butterscotch aroma. Butterscotch flavor and odd carbonation. Bleh. Very little head, no lace. Not drinking more of this. Hints of bridal leather and kerosene, reminds me of the fresh earth at a funeral. The finish was thankfully, not that long nor lingering. No bbe date.

Misty cider (how telling) with a thick broth of white head.
Nose of musty pressed apples and brown stalky hops.
Enter with a tart notion of granny smith apple sauce. And here it lingers for a good long while. Doughier in the midlands, but still with a raw tartness that seems ultimately out of place. Fades with vague notions of herbal hops.
Medium in both body and carbonation.
Maybe I just prefer the Dusseldorf renditions, but this one has little worth to me.

Pretty pour. A hazy orange beer that sparkles and then explodes into a bright white head that sticks around.

Smells like plums and overripe fruit. It's a very intense smell but not complicated.

Tastes...different. Yeast and malt upfront. Plums giving way to a strong, very juicy taste of generic fruit that disolves into a bitter lemon in the back. Complex and different, and nicely balanced, but not really my cup of tea. Too sweet in strange ways.

Nice body and it goes down smooth.

From what I've heard, this beer really varies from bottle to bottle. If I ever come across it again, I might give it another try. Until then, it's just a rather MOR import.

Light haze in a golden mustard body. Light, soft guazey-white head. Peppery, tangy barley malt. Wet hay, buttered oatmeal. Interesting. Tangy hay and oats. Dry. Sourdough bread. Yeasty, getting slightly bitter into the long, semi-acidic finish. A little too tart? Light to medium bodied with a refreshing, crisp, dry feel. Not bad, and nice that it’s organic.

Poured a murky brownish tan, with a few rather scary sediment chunks drifting about. Not nearly enough heft to the malt, the beer leaned in the direction of a thin astrigency. I kept waiting for the flavor in this beer to get up and do something, but it seemed content to languish in mediocrity. No punch of any kind from the hops, and the malt just had no horsepower.

Clear yellow-gold color (with a slight haziness) and a towering white head. The head has decent retention. Cereal grains and a dryish spicy continental hop smell in the aroma. Fleeting veggie smell (didn’t believe it at first). Not terrifically carbonated, and llight to medium mouthfeel. Grassy and hoppy, and a rather dry finish. Pretty good for a spring sipping beer; it is refreshing, but not outstanding.

As I poured this I was thinking "This is an Alt?". The color was way off, imo. It was a medium to light golden color, with some chill haze. I was expecting something more copper-hued. The head was bright white, fine and creamy, though, with so-so lacing. I found the nose to display mostly hops, and in sort of a grassy type of fashion, too. I found no hints of any malt in the nose. The body was leaning towards medium, yet not quite there; a fine carbonation produced a foamy, creamy feel on the tongue. As in the nose, I found no maltiness to speak of in the taste, either. It was predominantly a grassy, slightly floral hoppiness. This tasted more like a Munchner Helles to me, imho. Granted, it's not bad, yet nothing like I was expecting!

As a sidebar, after posting my review I read others. I noticed MississaugaMatt mentioned that this is in the "Munster" Alt style. Is that a recognized sub-category? If so, what are the parameters? I judged this solely by the Dusseldorf Alt parameters and personal experience drinking that style of Alt. Vielen Dank!!

Furthermore, I just consulted a Michael Jackson bier book, and he mentions that this bier is definitely much different from the Dusseldorf style, and made with 40% wheat to boot....

0.5L brown bottle, capped, no date.

This altbier poured a very slightly hazy, golden amber color with creamy, white foam that settled flat. A somewhat unexpected color for an altbier. The smell was very lightly sweet and malty with a bit of biscuit and an aroma somewhat grain-like. The taste was lightly sweet and tangy with an almost corn sweetness. A light hoppiness came through in the finish. There was a hint of floral hops in with the bitter. The mouthfeel was smooth and creamy with medium-light body and low carbonation. Not much of an aftertaste. This was a bit of an odd altbier, unlike the typical Düsseldorf style altbiers that I am familiar with.

Organic Alt is a cloudy yellow color with a high level of carbonation. The head is tall and pretty thick. Aroma is of sweet grain, almost euro lager-like, with an edge of darker malt. Taste starts with sweet malt, with an earthy edge. Graininess is high for the style. Herbal hops stay in the background. A slight lemony flavor is noted mid-sip and is joined by an acidic mouthfeel. Midsip also brings a musty flavor that seems off. This doesn't taste like the few alts I've sampled. Flavors collide all over the place and provide no cohesive taste. Maybe my bottle is off or old. Anyway, this isn't bad, but isn't something I particularly want to drink either.

Pours a mostly clear, pale yellow body with a soapy, vanilla head that retains well and produces a lot of patchy lace. Active carbonation is very apparent in the glass.
Aroma is subdued, with very floral blossomy hops.
Mouthfeel has a light medium body and sparkling carbonation.
Taste is well balanced, with floral and citrusy(orange and grapefruit) hops and a biscuity and bready malt.
Nice taste, excellent balance, and wonderful drinkability.

My first alt brew, so I gonna review with a grain of salt. I read the style characteristics, so here we go:

Hazy lemon yellow pour, foamy white head, some lacing.
Aroma: lemons and grass, both weak
Taste: Hmmm. Again, lemon and grass to start, very subtle and unremarkable. This style seems awfully thin – almost like lemon soda water. Would make a decent summer brew, but deep in Nov. it lacks backbone and character. The Pinky may be a good rep. of the alt, but this is something I’m not going to go after.

A different alt is needed for comparison.
