Clear yellow-gold color (with a slight haziness) and a towering white head. The head has decent retention. Cereal grains and a dryish spicy continental hop smell in the aroma. Fleeting veggie smell (didn’t believe it at first). Not terrifically carbonated, and llight to medium mouthfeel. Grassy and hoppy, and a rather dry finish. Pretty good for a spring sipping beer; it is refreshing, but not outstanding.

As I poured this I was thinking "This is an Alt?". The color was way off, imo. It was a medium to light golden color, with some chill haze. I was expecting something more copper-hued. The head was bright white, fine and creamy, though, with so-so lacing. I found the nose to display mostly hops, and in sort of a grassy type of fashion, too. I found no hints of any malt in the nose. The body was leaning towards medium, yet not quite there; a fine carbonation produced a foamy, creamy feel on the tongue. As in the nose, I found no maltiness to speak of in the taste, either. It was predominantly a grassy, slightly floral hoppiness. This tasted more like a Munchner Helles to me, imho. Granted, it's not bad, yet nothing like I was expecting!

As a sidebar, after posting my review I read others. I noticed MississaugaMatt mentioned that this is in the "Munster" Alt style. Is that a recognized sub-category? If so, what are the parameters? I judged this solely by the Dusseldorf Alt parameters and personal experience drinking that style of Alt. Vielen Dank!!

Furthermore, I just consulted a Michael Jackson bier book, and he mentions that this bier is definitely much different from the Dusseldorf style, and made with 40% wheat to boot....

Pours a mostly clear, pale yellow body with a soapy, vanilla head that retains well and produces a lot of patchy lace. Active carbonation is very apparent in the glass.
Aroma is subdued, with very floral blossomy hops.
Mouthfeel has a light medium body and sparkling carbonation.
Taste is well balanced, with floral and citrusy(orange and grapefruit) hops and a biscuity and bready malt.
Nice taste, excellent balance, and wonderful drinkability.

My first alt brew, so I gonna review with a grain of salt. I read the style characteristics, so here we go:

Hazy lemon yellow pour, foamy white head, some lacing.
Aroma: lemons and grass, both weak
Taste: Hmmm. Again, lemon and grass to start, very subtle and unremarkable. This style seems awfully thin – almost like lemon soda water. Would make a decent summer brew, but deep in Nov. it lacks backbone and character. The Pinky may be a good rep. of the alt, but this is something I’m not going to go after.

A different alt is needed for comparison.

Poured a hazy light golden color with moderate white creamy head. modest lacing. Smell is summer fruity, with some citrus (lemon) notes also present. Taste follows through on the taste with a nice fruity sweetness and stronger lemon tastes. At the finish a fine hop bitter bitterness begins to come through, which proves to be a fine ending for this beer. Not quite what I was extecting, but still a very enjoyable beer.

Bought in the brown pint bottle...lovelly old fashioned style label.
Ok after a shaky pour .and a monsterous head the beer settled down to a pale golden , honeyish looking beer..the head goes but leaves nice lace.
Very nice feresh malty, spicy aroma to this..almost Belgian in smell.
MM intresting taste..but its the weirdest altbier I have had..,ore like a Belgian golden ale..spicy, malty and very sweet..citrus tones at the end.
Its pretty nice on the tongue.
A nice drinkable beer..but not really a classic alt..worth a try though.

Organic Munster Alt

Appearance- piss yellow with no head at all.
Smell- yeasty, pilsner. Sweet.
Taste- sweet and yeasty. Flat.
Mouthfeel- watery and disappointing. Went down smooth though!?

Overall- what is this?! Too watery, too cheap tasting. Maybe I have a bad bottle but this was a total waste.

From a 500ml brown Euro bottle, red label, no freshness date.

Pours out a light chill hazed golden honey colour, small dash of white head that recedes to a thin film. Cut grass and hay on the nose, along with some faint bready malt, and just as faint metallic grain. The flavour starts out with some light malt, more grainy and dry in the middle, blending into a hop finish akin to thick wet grass, and somewhat floral. The aftertaste is sticky but dry, it coats the palate yet still has something of a parching effect. A fairly light altbier, but enjoyable for what it is. I'm not craving another, nor do I have any major plans to run out and buy more, but it's one of the more decent organic beers that I've sampled, it has it's own small charm.

got this one in a trade with stephenlouis. thanks stephen!

the label on this one doesn't quite match the picture. it says "original pinkus obergarig" and "pinkus alt" on the back, so i think it's the same one.

pours a pale straw yellow with a bit of pure white head. quickly drops and leaves no lace behind.

aroma is ok. corn and dms, but not overpowering. not much else to it though.

taste is ok. fairly plain and simple. hint of bitterness. little dms. touch of biscuity malt. hint of spicy hops. decent, but not wowing me.

mouthfeel is good. it's light and has a fairly low well integrated carbonation.

dirnkability is ok. at first the aroma threw me off, but it's a decent and enjoyable beer.

Single bomber bottle copped from Gary's in Madison for $2.75...
Very different than your average Altbier, with a pronounced mustard and butter flavor, very unique with a strong body and flavor to match...
Pours a hazy, murky hue with rising carbonation and a significant amount of lacing...
Smell: Replete with bread, butter, carmel, and slight sugars...
Taste: Flavor strongly complemented the aroma, and as mentioned before, had a mustard-like aftertaste, with bread and butter on the tongue as well...
Good, creamy mouthfeel along with a great level of drinkability...
Certainly a different-style beer...
Worth a try...

Opaque gold, lighter than I expected. Bright white head of 1/4 inch and small bubble sizes. Sheets on the Imperial pint glass. Whopping malted chocolate milk aroma, like a Dairy Queen malt dessert or something. Flowery and nutty flavors, lots of cashew and a lot of persistant mouthfeel for style. While there is bit of hoppiness, its more like a seedy skin bitterness that permeates the sweet side from middle to finish. Not a dry finish at all, lots of aftertaste. Seems a lot bigger in profile than many Alts, you can either like it or go the other way.

Hazy pale-gold hue, white fluffy head, reaches a modest half finger, held well. Unorganized lace. The nose is aromatic… I just don’t think I like the smell. Funky and tart, earthy, raw sweetness that’s muted. Odd. The palate has raw sweetness, like fresh honey, lemony-tart with noticeable wheaty taste too. There is a strong acidic bite. The maltiness is weak. Odd but it was okay to drink. The hops are more available as it warmed, an improvement. Medium body. Indifferent carbonation. Creamy mouthfeel. I can’t say I’d recommend this one. I prefer the Dusseldorf-style of Alt.

0.5L brown bottle, capped, no date.

This altbier poured a very slightly hazy, golden amber color with creamy, white foam that settled flat. A somewhat unexpected color for an altbier. The smell was very lightly sweet and malty with a bit of biscuit and an aroma somewhat grain-like. The taste was lightly sweet and tangy with an almost corn sweetness. A light hoppiness came through in the finish. There was a hint of floral hops in with the bitter. The mouthfeel was smooth and creamy with medium-light body and low carbonation. Not much of an aftertaste. This was a bit of an odd altbier, unlike the typical Düsseldorf style altbiers that I am familiar with.

Pours medium yellow with a foamy white head. No lace, moderate retention (about half a glass before gone).

Grassy notes with some herbal aromas, some light malt.

Nice light malt, with some sweet grass and bitter herb. Dries out a bit, and you get a grassy bitter bite. Clean brew with a nice bitter and light malt finish.

Nice light body, decent carbonation.

What more can you ask for from a brewer. This is terrific and refreshing brew. Nice job.

Pours a dark gold color (lighter than many alts i've had). Small white head, very sticky on the side of the glass. Smell is sweet and grainy, very earthy and pungent. Alcohol is present in the smell, but it tastes stronger than it is. Biscuity yeast and earthy. A very unique beer, i can't really compare it with anything else.

This is light but tasty, with a firm character, a little complexity, and high drinkability.

Slightly hazy straw-gold, it has a medium white head steadily shrinking to a thin foamy ring and a little weak lace.

Aroma is fully fruity grain, herbs, bread, apple, pear, yeast - a bit like a Belgian blonde/pale ale crossed with a helles bier.

Taste is similar, light, crisp, but with a solid, firm character and a little complexity well-rounded. It is strong, fruity grain, yeasty-tangy bread dough, mineral, light herbs, hay, light pear and apple. It finishes with a mineral-lemony dryness, slightly yeasty-lemony-earthy tartness, before a slightly sweeter, lingering aftertaste of grain.

Into a half-liter mug, this beer is a very pale gold with a moderate head. Crystal clear. Sweet, grainy malt aroma. Good malt flavor for a light beer, like the best Helles. Balanced by a light-to-medium bitterness that dries out the sweetness, and adds a touch of floral hop character. Fruitiness is low but detectable. Light bodied with a crisp character.

Very drinkable beer, light but tasty.

A: Straw gold liquid with a big puffy white head.

S: Fruity malt without any hop character that I can distinguish. Some vinous yeasty notes.

T: Lots of fruity grain flavor. Mild apricots are somehow brought forth from malted barley. It has the meticulous attention to grain that you find in German beers. It just doesn't draw me in as much as the best of them.

M: Pretty good mouthfeel. It's a touch thin but fresh and crisp on the palate.

D: Interesting but not incredible. It's a surprisingly solid beer, but I can't say that I'll necessarily buy another bottle.

Pinkus Organic Münster Alt

Bottle Inspection: Brown 500 ml bottle certified organic, not much else to report.

Aroma: Sweet floral nose with noble hop earthiness blending with a light wet grain. Bit of a bready yeast character too.

Appearance: Dark golden yellow with a trace of thin white head and collar that give up some short lived lace, but not much.

Flavor: Definite "German" quality to it that I'm guessing is either the noble hops or the yeast strain, probably the combination. A fruit taste, pear mostly, hints of bubblegum, and lightly sweet malt.

Mouthfeel: The grainy texture really pushes the pear experience, otherwise medium light body with a slightly syrupy feel.

Overall Impression: Good beer, not really refreshing or filling, good middle of the road beer. Great taste for an organic beer, most the others I've tasted have issues, this is just good beer.
Worth a try

Very light clearish yellow with a good sized big white head. Smell is light malty graininess, almost a spiced essence and a touch metallic. Taste is a mix of a light maltiness and subtle yeastiness. Very similar to a lightly flavored Wit beer. Not bad at all, but then again, nothing spectacular. It is the first organic beer I've tried that didn't taste strange in some way though.

Clear golden in hue if decanted off the yeast sediment. Impressive fluffy, thick well retained head. Herbal Hallertauer hop nose, along w/ a bit of mellow tartness due to the unusual use of wheat in the grist. Soft grainy malt flavors in flavor, but that honey - like sweetness is prominent, just as in Pinkus's Pils. Hop bitterness is fairly subdued for an alt and residual malt sweetness is high, but as a beer in itself this is a very tasty one. Hop flavor is absent. Although Munster lacks the crispness and assertive bitterness of an alt, there's plenty of flavor to make it an enjoyable brew.

Poured into a Pinkus glass on 2/12/13

Dimmed golden straw color; rather clear. A one inch head of white, crackling foam is fed by constantly rising bubbles. Smooth, thinner retention. No lace.

Grass, straw, hay, floral and herbal hops are prominent in the aroma. Smells mildly spicy, too; maybe a little allspice? Toasted grains with a hint of biscuit.

The taste is similarly sharp in terms of the herbal grassiness of the hops; though it tames of time. There are some light juicy overtones especially in the middle. The malt bill is concise and dry. Biscuity malt fills out toward the end.

Light, juicy body with smooth, easy going carbonation. Grass notes linger on the finish.

I think this is my first proper German Alt. Pretty well enjoyable.

A: Slightly hazy gold with mild carbonation from small bubbles. Bone white head starts out fizzy, turns rocky and then settles to a thin film. Leaves bits of lace.

S: Fruity apple and pear scents, with a straw backbone. A little bit musty too.

T: Quite hay like, with a pepper bitterness that provides nice balance. A pear flavor can be tasted throughout the experience. Finishes tart and dry with a lingering lemon flavor.

M: Medium body feels bit syrupy. Carbonation level is a tad too high.

D: A nice unassuming beer. I'm glad I picked it up. Relatively low ABV makes for easy drinking. Seems like a good session beer.
