This is a beer I like. Not so hoppy but full of malty goodness. Color is straw with a modest off white head.

Smell is mildly hoppy, a light citrus nose. Also there is a little biscuity smell.

Taste is crispy and tangy with a great grainy punch. Flavors are mildly sweet and there is a bit of cherry.

Mouthfeel is full and carbonation is moderate with a neutral finish.

I like this beer in many ways and the drinkability is high.

A: Pinkus Alt is deep amber in color with a slight haze, and decorated with healthy lacing and a frothy white head.

S: This beer smells like a mash-tun, rich with grainy goodness. The honey and grain aromas are rich, bold, and let you know that you are about to enjoy a malty treat.

T: As the nose promises, This beer is saturated with flavors of raw barley, wheat, and oatmeal, topped off with a dose of honey to sweeten the deal.

M: Medium in body, carbonation, and chewiness.

D: This is a delightful, readily available Altbier that delivers the goods. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to get to know German beer.

Looks more like a pils than their ur pils does. This one is a straw slightly hazed, but no yeast sediment in the bottle. Vibrant golden with a nice brilliant white head to match, fine lacing billowing head beauty in a glass. Aroma has a nice honey malt fruit notes/tart citrus/tropical tones with herbal grassiness going strong this smells excellent. Strong tart cereal notes hints of citrus/tropical mango fruits/a touch of pineapple. Very nice expression of malt and German yeast strains, nothing like the brown versions found in Dusseldorf this is a pale Munster alt, totally different version. Carbonation is natural smooth light to medium bodied never heavy/light perfect crisp fruity qualities blend on the palate. Drinkability overall was killer, a beer I remember trying before I started writing reviews. I'm glad I decided to revisit these beers, each one is more interesting than the next. Next up the dunkel...

.5L, Germany, best by Oct. 2011.

Pours a clear, light gold with a fizzy head. Decent retention; tiny bit of lacing.

Aroma is interesting for the style. Lots of tangy, ripe fruit -- almost like a wheat beer -- and a good dose of biscuits and grain.

Pinkus Original is brewed to the "Alt" style, but it's completely different from Düsseldorfer Alt, which is more of a brown ale. The flavor is lightly tart and grainy, almost like an amalgamation of Exportbier, Weissbier and Kölsch. Let me explain: this interesting brew combines the grainy maltiness of an Export, the fruity tartness of a old-style Weisse, and the German "aleness," if you will, of a Kölsch. Tangy hop character adds some depth and bitterness. The mouthfeel is light and soda-like, but with relatively creamy carbonation. Finish was a tad too grainy.

At first I wasn't too keen on this stuff (probably because I was expecting a typical Alt) but then I realized how unique and drinkable it is. Unlike any other German ale I've sampled.

Poured from bottle into pilsner glass. Liquid is a hazy yellow with a small white fizzy cap that quickly settles. Smell is incredibly bready, lots of raw dough and crust. Some yeast and malted wheat in the smell as well. Taste seems off - it is equally tart and sour as it is malty. I cant remember having an altbier that was this tart, not to mention this lacking in hop flavor. Mouthfeel is light body with a medium high carbonation. Drinkability is not too good because of the off flavors... Overall this beer's flavors are a bit harsh and unbalanced. Pinkus, meet drain.

A very spirited white head bubbles up from an aggressive pour, needing a few moments to recede before pouring the last of the bottle into the half liter glass stein. The slightly hazy straw-yellow brew exhibits loads of active carbonation, keeping the head resupplied.

The aroma is of flowery hops with a little scent of grape and melon.

Full grain flavor predominates, but of an earthy nature, with some slightly sweet fruit overtones and mellow hop accents. Well balanced and enjoyable, the wheat influence gives this beer a lightness that makes it easily digestible (unless you are allergic to wheat). The generous carbonation delivers a frothy fusillade of fun with each sip.

A nice session beer that agreed well with some salty pretzels.

A: The beer poured hazy golden yellow in color with a thin white head that quickly dissipated, leaving a ring of bubbles around the edge of the glass and some lacy patterns in the center. A light amount of carbonation is visible.
S: There are aromas of bread and caramel malts in the nose, along with some notes of apples.
T: Unlike the smell, the malty flavors are not as pronounced in the taste and only lend some hints of sweetness. Fruity flavors are more apparent in the finish; apples and lemons stand out in particular.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and a bit watery on the palate with a light amount of carbonation.
D: The light-bodied nature of this beer makes it go down rather easily.

appearance; lighter colored then some Altbier, straw yellow with the slightest bit of cloudyness. Intricate lacing as a beautiful head retreats at a moderate speed.

smell; malty and some fruit and honey, slightest bit of floral hops as well.

taste; Hops are almost absent, just some floral flavors but slight. Very noticeable fruity malts, that linger into the aftertaste and turn almost toasty and warm. Some grape-like tartness like a Kölsch, but then is quickly neutralized by the malts. This is very solid with the malts, without being sweet, that's what I expect from this style....well done! Great aftertaste!

mouthfeel; Loose and smooth, with weak carbonation, certainly not flat though, nothing special just quality.

drinkability; smooth, light, and tasty, one could drink all night and day.

500ml bottle from Gourmet Haus Staudt. Straw colored with some haziness. The head doesn't stick around long on this one, receding in minutes to a thin film. Smells very fruity, but it's hard to place - persimmon maybe? A bit of tartness, citrus zest, light bready malt and a bit of aspirin. Similar on the palate, ambiguously fruity with a touch of lemony tartness and orange peel. Fairly sweet, and lacking the bitter finish I'd expect from an alt (or any finish to speak of, actually - it just falls off the palate). Finishes with an aspirin-like flavor that puts me off. The body is thin and carbonation a bit too low. Pretty mediocre, though it goes down easily enough.

Poured into a large goblet gives me a pale straw brew with good carbonation and a white head that doesn't leave much lace.

The aroma is musty, earthy, with some grainy malts and a little floral hops.

More grainy malts in the taste. Not too sweet, with some nice floral and herbal hop character. Moderately dry finish.

Mouthfeel is light, and very clean and crisp with a slight fizz from the carbonation.

On a hot day this would be a fantastically thirst quenching beer. I think I could knock a few of these back in quick succession. The organic aspect is a big plus in my opinion.

A - Straw colored, dramatic white head that dissipates as quickly as it appears.

S - Sweet malts and earthy muskiness.

T - Very sweet and floral with a honey finish.

M - Lighter than expected, very pleasant.

D - I had no idea what to expect with this one. I expected something much darker and rougher but was given a sweet surprise.

Poured from a 500 ml bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: Fluffy white head on a slightly hazy golden body. Head retention and lacing is a little light.

Smell: Sweet and grainy pale malts with some grassy/herbal hops.

Taste: Pale malts, good hop flavors, mild bitterness.

This beer is much more simple than I was expecting. Kinda reminds me of a kolsch.

Nice cloudy straw-golden colored pour with white head. Nose has bright fresh fruits with a whiff of See's hard candies. On the palate the fruit is there as well, but also a pleasant malty component that isn't overly sweet. Rather light bodied but smooth texture of course, with nice carbonation. Good drinkability.

500ml bottle poured into a Duvel tulip.

Pours a nice golden yellow with a small white head with some nice lacing. Nose is malty, dry, yeasty and a bit fruity.

Taste is sharp, got that signature German lager flavor that's very crisp and refreshing. It's got a nice light noble hop bite but there's also some creamy maltiness to it. It's super drinkable, especially when it's 90 degrees out.

look: 3 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 3.5

Poured from 500mL bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: body is slightly hazy with a medium-light golden hue. Head is a thick finger of pillowy white foam. This looks OK, overall, but is way lighter than I think of an alt as being.

Smell: aroma is slightly fruity; slightly biscuity. Malt is quite sweet and there's not much here in the way of hops. Not bad, but again, not super altbier-ey.

Taste: quite fruity: pear and apple, mostly. The beer is sweet and bitterness isn't strong enough for good balance (though there is some bitterness at the end). Earthy hops are present, and they are nice, but overall this beer is kind of sticky and I feel like the brewers could have put a bit more care into it. That said, it's not *too* bad.

Mouthfeel: at last, something to celebrate. Medium body (concomitant with all that residual sweetness, no doubt) mixes with a decent carbonation to yield a rich, creamy texture. Like it.

Drinkability: to me this beer is a little too sweet, not really to style, imbalanced and generally flawed. It is pretty refreshing, though, and I dig the texture quite a lot. Split the difference.

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 1 pint 0.9oz bottle into a tall stange glass.

Appearance: The body has a slightly hazy golden body which seems a bit light for the style. There is some visible carbonation that helps support it tall white head. The hangs on very well and makes good splotchy lace patters on the glass.

Smell: Its aroma is mostly malty and nutty with some classic German spicy floral hops mixed in with just the slightest touch of mineral.

Taste/Palate: I get a firm medium bodied beer with loads of bready and nutty maltiness with just a touch of dry earthy yeast. This is balanced by classic German hops that add some spicy and floral flavor notes as well as some moderate bitterness and dryness. Its finish is bready and dry with hints of the hops.

Notes: To some this beer up quickly I would call it simply liquid bread and a tasty one at that.

Transcribed from undated notes.

The pour initially netted a massive two fingers' worth of rocky, bone-white head that settled into a marshmallow Fluf-like consistency. Color was a beautiful straw-yellow with NE-quality clarity. Nose was light, slightly sweet, but quite tempting. Mouthfeel was medium with a very dry quality on the tongue. Finish was totally, bone-dry. Man, this would be fantastic in the summer.

My first Alt bier. Very nice.

It's yellow with a white head that dies down fairly quickly.
Aroma is mostly malt.
First taste is surprisingly clean. The flavor hits the tongue and disappears almost immediately. Kind of sour, but in a good way.
Nice carbonation and mouthfeel.
Very drinkable.

pours a surprisingly light color, peachy gold and quite hazy. Head is big and frothy, quite inviting overall, though so far it is far from what I'd expect from the style.
Aroma follows suit. There is big fruitiness here. Orchard fruits, some citrus, suggestion of doughy malt before hops and more likely yeast takes over. If blindfolded I'd have said this was more like something using the Fullers yeast strain than an alt.
Flavor continues the fruitiness. There is a honey-ish sweetness like a fresh peach to the flavor with moderate tartness in the finish. Moderate bitterness though it doesn't really linger. It's not particularly clean with a mildly sticky sweet fruit flavor coating the palate, again at odds with what I'd expect. Not particularly caramel-y either.
Carbonation is medium low, body medium, drinkability high after I quit trying to figure it out and just enjoyed it.

As a general beverage this falls somewhere between good and excellent. As an alt, I can't see how I'd even rate it as average. I shall have to do more "research" on this beer!

Germany's oldest organic brewery has quite the extensive selection in the Organic Market. Pours out an "untypical" Altbier color of light honeyed amber. Light carbonation makes a nice light fluffy head. Looks a bit like a Keller bier.
On the nose--tart lemon, musty grains, touch of orange, lightly sweet-apple,pear, grape.the sweetness is nicely cut by the blast of mineral, grain, and fresh grass.
Flavor is reminiscent of a Berliner Weisse. Lemon, acidic, light, nicely carbonated, and just the right amount of creaminess to balance. this finish is long and lingering with pepper, honey and lemon.
nice, light tart and refreshing. Maybe not a typical Altbier but tasty nonetheless. I'll be living near Munster soon, so looks like I'll have lots more in my future Cheers

500 mL bottle,

A: Pours a cloudy yellow with a light white head, no real lace, looks like a hefeweizen.

S: Classic German malt smell, bock like a 180 from what I was expected due to the colour. Smells like Alt. Nice minerality.

T: Pilsner malt, with a nice tartness bringing notes of lemon and hard water. Nice flavour, unique for the style.

M: Crisp mouthfeel with carbonation that just dances on the palate makes this beer very refreshing, in this aspect it reminds me a bit of Berliner Weisse.

D: Pinkus has brought a smorgasboard of German beer styles together and created a fantastic ale. This would make a great beer for the summertime.

A: Golden/straw color. A bit cloudy. White head dissipates to a thin line of white foam with pretty good lace.

S: Carmel sweetness comes through on top. A little doughy maltiness. Just a wee bit of grassy hop character.

T: Sweetness and maltiness, honey character. I also get a sort of sourness, a fruity acidity that is a little off putting at first, but then begins to lend itself to a nice crisp finish. The hop character is restrained, but in nice balance with the sweetness.

M: Carbonation is a little too thin for me. Other than that it has a nice clean finish and a lingering sweetness. The taste left on the tongue after a glass of the stuff is almost as if you just finished off some cider.

D: Smooth and crisp. The finish is really the best part of this beer. You could drink a few of these, especially on a hot day.

Poured from a 16.9oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a light gold color, with a short white head that fades slowly and leaves a spotty lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is of light caramelized malts, honey and a little bit of hops.

T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of honey and caramel. Then there is some breadiness from a hearty but not too heavy malt character. The hops presence is mild but complementary and brings some balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is clean.

D: A little tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, mild kick, not the best representation of style, this is a decent beer that it worth drinking for a while but there are others in the style that I would pick first.
