This beer is yellow, with a fizzy white head that leaves some lacing on the glass. Really I though Altbiers are supposed to be darker. This looks like a lager.

This smells like a pilsner to me. Grassy and hoppy. A little bit of soapiness to it.

The taste is tart and a bit acidic. Fruity in spots and grassy in other spots. The finish may have just a bit of ginger to it. Doesn't taste bad, but what lingers isn't all that nice.

There isn't much body, perhaps a bit of an oily feel, and the carbonation is prickly on the lips and tongue. Not for savoring.

Even though there isn't much good about this one, it still goes down alright. Perhaps a fair weather beer, however I won't be after this one again.

Appearance: pours a hazy pale yellow color with a 2" head. The head quickly falls to a thick surface foam. Some mild lacing paints the glass.

Smell: grassy - no more like a freshly mowed lawn after a spring rain.

Taste: biscuity and grainy, with loads of grass tones and lemon / grapefruit citrus. Very dry.

Mouthfeel: crisp at the start and finish. The dryness is most noticeable by the tongue. Medium bodied.

Drinkability: not the altbier I expected. Average drinkability as this is too grassy and dry. This is an example that organic may not always be the better choice.

The beer jumps out a pale translucent yellow color with a big foamy white head. Whaa? There is a light berry aroma. The flavor is very fruity, again, berry. It is sugary sweet with a slight soapiness in the finish/ aftertaste. Mouthfeel is the best thing here. It's mid-weight and fluffy. I was really expecting more from Ayinger on this. Maybe I'm just a dumb american, but his beer is not only antithetical to my idea of alt, its just not a very good beer for any style.

Light haze in a golden mustard body. Light, soft guazey-white head. Peppery, tangy barley malt. Wet hay, buttered oatmeal. Interesting. Tangy hay and oats. Dry. Sourdough bread. Yeasty, getting slightly bitter into the long, semi-acidic finish. A little too tart? Light to medium bodied with a refreshing, crisp, dry feel. Not bad, and nice that it’s organic.

( Served in an Imperial pint glass)

A- This beer pours has a hazy golden orange body with creamy white head that last and last. The carbonation is a slow gentle note of tiny bubbles.

S- The notes of dry pale malt with a slightly sweet caramel malt note. No real note of hops. As it warms the smell of fresh malt and a slight earthiness comes through.

T- This beer has a dry pale malt and biscuit note that is soon followed by a bright fruity almost orange note. The finish has a slight green noble hops bitterness. As it warms the orange note has a slight nutty quality to it.

M- This beer has a medium-full mouthfeel with a slightly thick texture that is note really creamy and not really watery.

D- This is not what I was expecting in an alt. The bright fruit notes are nice and adds more depth. The malt flavors are light but complex with fresh grain qualities that are refreshing.

Pours hazy golden ( I wish I remember what color it was when I drank this in N. Germany, but that was late into the night in Hamelin (sp??)) Not a traditional alt color to my understanding. Thick white head fades to a sight film. below average lacing

Smell: Sweetness/malt and not much else

Taste: Sweetness, some tartness, not much (hints) grainy toasty (none) notes I look for in an alt. Will be interested to see what other reviewers stateside think of this. dryness and some bitterenss in the finish. Reminds me of a golden ale. Not a slave to style but gotta knock it down some for straying this far IMHO. I'd rate this much higher as a golden ale, probably at least .5 more on the overall. I've tryed about 5 German & 3 American alts and this just seems out of whack for the style

MF: Slight prickly but otherwise balanced

Actually quite drinkable, just not in the style box. If you want that, find some Diebels!!

This Alt Beer poured into a mug was golden amber with a white head and slight lace. The smell is fruity with citrus and malt overtones. Nicely carbonated with a medium-weight mouth feel. The taste is a mixture of earthy grains and banana with a tart finish. This was my first beer from this brewery and it was pretty good. About to follow it up with their Pils.

16.9 oz bottle.

Pours incredibly light..nearly colorless. Wasn't quite what I was expecting there.. Decent head retention despite the somewhat fizzy head. Very grassy/herbal aroma of light hops and a strong wheat character. The taste is very wheaty and almost corrosive on the palate...very grainy mouthfeel. A somewhat refreshing light alt from Germany, but overall, nothing too spectacular..and I couldn't care less about the whole "organic" thing.

My first alt brew, so I gonna review with a grain of salt. I read the style characteristics, so here we go:

Hazy lemon yellow pour, foamy white head, some lacing.
Aroma: lemons and grass, both weak
Taste: Hmmm. Again, lemon and grass to start, very subtle and unremarkable. This style seems awfully thin – almost like lemon soda water. Would make a decent summer brew, but deep in Nov. it lacks backbone and character. The Pinky may be a good rep. of the alt, but this is something I’m not going to go after.

A different alt is needed for comparison.

Poured from a 16.9 oz dark brown bottle, small label on neck proclaims "Organic".

Pours a very light (almost whitish) pale, cloudy yellow, with a lasting, sticky, foamy white head.

Aroma is a reminiscent of a healthy breakfrast cereal, grains, oats, some sourish citrus notes in there as well.

taste is fairly mild, malty and slightly sour and sweet at the same time. very slight hops become noticeable on finish as it warms up.

Not bad, not bad at all.

Though it is a good beer, I don't think that it fits the style. I expected a deep copper - amber color. Instead, I got a hazy golden - copper hue. Has good head retention and lacing. Aromas are beady and citrusy. Thought I expect mild fruit aromas, I don't expect the tart citrus notes. Flavors are the same. the lemon-ey character over-rides the medium malt profile. The hops add a spiciness the the beer that is not expected. Though I like hop bittering in an Alt, I don't go for the spices here. The yeasty flavors take on a Belgian 'twang' , leaving the beer less clean than in most alts. The body is medim and a tad bit astringent. Finishes far too dry for an Alt, but crisp and fairly clean. Again, good beer, but not an Alt.

Served from .5 liter bottle without freshness date.

Poured a somewhat hazy golden amber with big, peaky white head and slight lace. Smells rather grainy and fruity; citrus and banana on a lightly toasted and wheaty malt base. Flavor is a continuing interplay of earthy grains with banana sweetness, finishing very pleasingly dry and tart. Nicely carbonated medium-weight body.

An unusual, but satisfying beer. The initial flavors are what you'd expect from an Alt, while the finish is saison-like; surprisingly tart and full of citrus.

This is another organic brew from the folks from the Pinkus Brewery, and it happens to be an altbier. I don't have that much experience with the alt style, but if this one is any indication of how the rest of the style is, I'll be looking forward to trying more.

Pinkus Alt pours an "organic" hazy copper color, with some golden hints to it. A finger of foam forms and retains for about 30 seconds. The aroma also hinted at the "organic" qualities of this beer, as it had a somewhat distinct but not overpowering mustiness to it. Nice grassy notes, along with the citric/herbal hoppiness add to the aroma, and later on the sweet malts become more pronounced as well. The initial sip struck me with a very sweet, caramel-like maltiness. A rather prominent bitterness hit me within those first few sips as well, although it seemed to mellow out as I drank on. The citric/herbal qualities of the hops here balance out the sweetness of the brew nicely. The aftertaste had some lingering maltiness, nuttiness, grassiness, and a slight touch of bitterness. The brew finishes out with no alcoholic warmth.

I thought that this was an interesting brew, and it was quite easy to drink as well. I hope to track down more more alts to see how they comapare with this one.

500 ml bottle. No date. Pours golden with a larg head the rapidly disapates. More kolsch aromas than what I would expect from an alt. Apples and flowers. The kolsch come though in the flavor also. Very crisp apple notes. Tangy. Slightly bitter. Medium body and high carbonation make this beer prickly over the tounge. Flavor leaves quickly. This is not what I expected. Not really an alt that I’m familiar with.

This Pinkus comes in an unattractive old school style bottle. As it pours out it's a yellow tinted color with a very white head. The head goes away in about 2 mins after pouring it into the glass. The whole while the beer bubbles away like mad.

It smells kind of like sour milk and wheat. Not the most appetizing smell.

Slightly sweet wheaty flavor. Reminds me of baking. Not a big fan. The bubbles are a little much too.

Overall I'm not a big fan of this beer. This is the second time that I've tried it and both times now I've not been a fan. Maybe it's my dislike for the Alt style of beer.

Beautiful label designed by Charlie Finkel.

The Pinkus Muller Munster Alt is certainly different than the altbiers common to Dusseldorf. It's yellow-gold in color; with a frothy head of bright-white foam that holds quite well, slowly drops to a creamy cap, and leaves wide rings of sticky lace about the glass with each sip.

The nose offers fresh, sweet, and grainy malt.

In the mouth its gently effervescent carbonation bristles the tongue before it warms to become somewhat creamy, displaying its medium body.

The flavor is much as the nose suggests, with its lightly sweetish and very subtly tart malt dominating. Some hops and a bit of very low key yeasty fruitiness come into play; and it's grassy, slightly doughy, and very mildly bitter with an underlying acidity that also helps to balance it.

This is a great, easy drinking, refreshing, and mildly complex beer that would be perfect in a wide variety of situations; and one that would pair easily with an even greater selection of foods. Quite nice!

This beer poured a very light pale color, very light. Nice size head which is rather foamy and fluffy. Aroma is really nice. Slightly sweet, slightly floral. A bit of yeast in there as well. Flavor is just nice and clean. Light grains hold the base along with a noticeable yeasty breadiness. A bit of hop spice is there and fits in well. More of a floral and lightly acidic finish. Very clean in the end. Well made, I enjoyed this bottle and drank it rather easily. Went very well to cleanse the palate with my corned beef sandwich during lunch. Oh, and the organic thing is really cool.

Poured a huge thick, white head atop a very light golden brew. The color is almost as light as budweiser which really surprised me as the last alt I had was Zum Uerige and it looked nothing like this. Aroma reminds me of hallertauer hops and it is blended with a dry toasty malt flavor and a weird ester I am not familiar with. The flavor is hoppy at first then it segues into an isipid watery flavor that finished very clean except for a touch of misplaced hop flavor. Very weird beer and I find it hard to call it an alt as it is sort of a mix between pilsner, alt, and kolsh. I would not buy this beer again.

Clear, and the color of polished brass. A bright and fine head, but a short-lived one.

Tart lemon nose, piney, sweet malt aroma and a hint of the vegetable.

A kick of hops starts it, bitter, earthy, and herbal. A mineral citric flash, then round maltiness, a bit less pronounced then expected for an altbier. The finish is stark and mildly bitter.

Medium bodied, yet creamy and with a decent carbonation. Yet it does lack the assertive bitterness and maltiness I like in an alt.

Pours much lighter than expected for a Dusseldorf Alt, but this is from Munster. Very light head, and the color is a hazy orange-yellow. The smell from the yeast in the bottle is evident along with malty aromas. The taste is mostly from the malt with an almost astringent hop flavor on the tounge. This could also be from the yeast I guess. The body seems very thin yet there is still a good malt base. I would definitly choose a Dusseldorf Alt over this, but still an interesting beer.

I was told this would be a little different than the Dusseldorf Alt style I am familiar with and it was. I found the flavor to be a little more acidic and the flavor and aroma to have a slight citrusy note. Of course there is plenty of malt and a very smooth finish on this. I did enjoy it and hope to again soon. Quaff away.

Organic Munster Alt

Appearance- piss yellow with no head at all.
Smell- yeasty, pilsner. Sweet.
Taste- sweet and yeasty. Flat.
Mouthfeel- watery and disappointing. Went down smooth though!?

Overall- what is this?! Too watery, too cheap tasting. Maybe I have a bad bottle but this was a total waste.

This was pretty disapointing. The beer poured well, although I was wondering about the color. The head came out rocky and well formed, but the brew itself was too pale.
The aroma was nice and fruity (tangerine and apricot) but not enough malt. As I remind myself that this is not an American alt, I suppose that this is not entirely inappropriate, but it was a little offputting.
The taste was well-balanced as such, but fairly insubstantial and fairly watery, as was the mouthfeel.
The self-same attributes lend well too a high drinkability, as does the minimal carbonation.
I was hoping for an earthier, maltier alt, but you live, you drink, you learn.

Appearance – gold body; erupting white head settles to moderate level; lace was average

Smell – wheat and yeast; German pilsner with less metallic/acid tone; low tone of spice

Taste – slightly hoppy but bigger grainy malts that run to the close; follows the nose rather closely

Mouthfeel & Drinkability – lightly crisp; clean; moderate body; ‘afterfeel’ was pleasant

The Munster Alt isn't a standout beer, but to gain a sense of the altbier, go for it.

0.5L brown bottle, capped, no date.

This altbier poured a very slightly hazy, golden amber color with creamy, white foam that settled flat. A somewhat unexpected color for an altbier. The smell was very lightly sweet and malty with a bit of biscuit and an aroma somewhat grain-like. The taste was lightly sweet and tangy with an almost corn sweetness. A light hoppiness came through in the finish. There was a hint of floral hops in with the bitter. The mouthfeel was smooth and creamy with medium-light body and low carbonation. Not much of an aftertaste. This was a bit of an odd altbier, unlike the typical Düsseldorf style altbiers that I am familiar with.
