Richie Imperial Porter is powerful and complex. Made with roasted barley and chocolate malts, it balances sharper flavors with a clean, semi-sweet finish.

This beer has an opaque black body with a thin ring of tan foam that last a bit. The smell is a mellow char but pronounced and some chocolate malt notes in the finish. The taste brings on much more character. Rich chocolate malt flavor has a light earthiness to it with a toasted malt note underneath and a soft chalk flavor in the finish. There is a roasted note that lingers nicely after each sip. The creamy carbonation enhances the finish of the beer nicely.

This is mellow but rich and is a classic porter with great chocolate malt flavors with some good depth but still very drinkable.

Nice dark pour with decent texture. Aroma smelled of a nice chocolate and fruity mix. Very pleasant taste, with decent carbonation and a nice kick to it. Very good strong beer and I look forward to this offering in the future.

Pours a slightly diluted chestnut color with a thin cap of coarse khaki bubbles that soon dissippates. Bold aroma smells of molasses, dark fruit, cherry cough syrup, and baking chocolate, with perhaps a faint trace of grassy hops. If this tastes anywhere near as good as it smells, I’m in for a real treat.

The taste features big roasted coffee up front with molasses and the cough syrup alluded to by the nose, courtesy of some herbal hops. Hints of peat and dark chocolate lurk beneath the surface as well. The mouthfeel is palpably thin, creating a distracting contrast with the robust flavor profile. The alcohol is not especially well-concealed either, leaving a perpetual sting on the tongue while drinking. Carbonation is on the high end of moderate, which reinforces the light mouthfeel that doesn’t really belong.

I picked this up on a whim not expecting much, and while I was encouraged by the aroma, the overall experience falls short of what I would have liked. I’ll give it credit for full flavor, but the thin body and unwieldy alcohol don’t justify its more positive aspects.
