22oz, 3/5/13
Batch #10
Riedel tulip

A: Hazy slightly burnt orange color. Off white full finger of soapy head. Leaving sticky lacing immediately. Dissipates quickly.

S: Definitely getting those tropical fruits as described. Mango and pineapple and papaya. There is just an overall sweetness from the hops and the malts behind it.

T: Intense bitterness on the tip of the tongue. Pulling those piney and floral flavors from the hops. Definitely some malt body here, it's certainly a DIPA. Finish is dry with lingering bitterness.

M: Medium bodied.

Bomber split with a friend in shaker pints

Deep golden color with plenty of white/cream head without forcing it.

The smell is pretty basic IPA. These hops don't produce a great pungency.

This drank like a west coast style DIPA. You get the heaviness. It was fairly bitter. The pineapple notes came through for a few sips in the middle. The alcohol definitely came through at 9%.

This was decent, but it doesn't hold up at $9/bomber in the Chicago market. I respect utilizing a couple different hops, but you can find many DIPAs more desirable.

(Served in a teku)
A- This beer has a crystal clear orange body with a slow carbonation of microbubbles and a creamy beige head that last or a good bit.

S- The pungent earthy hops have a nice citrus pith to them with some cat pee aromas growing in the finish.

T- The pungent dandelion green hops has some pineapple weed taste in to follow that turns into more of a canned tropical fruit and apricots hop flavor as it opens. Also some caramel sweetness starts to bleed through the mountain of hops as it opens. The pungent hop bit lingers and grows until it stains the tongue.

M- This beer has a medium-light mouthfeel and a slightly slippery texture with a gentle fizz and no real alcohol heat until it warms a bit.

O- this beer has a wonderful depth of hops and good malt support but all flavors are pretty soft compared to the punishing bitterness of the hops. That bitterness really dominates and grows as it opens until the tongue is done for the night.

Bottle from West Lakeview Liquors. Served in a tulip at at Marie and Stella's Steampunk extravaganza.

A - A finger of white foam settle to a thin ring, and minimal lace. Transparent golden body.

S - Lots of orange rind, dank herbs, earth and pine here, with perhaps a touch of tropical sweetness melding with the balancing malt, and lightly burnt sugars. Perhaps a hint of alcohol amid the sharp pine.

T - An 'old-school' DIPA, with lots of pine and grapefruit zest, with mild melon sweetness. More bready and less sweet than the aroma, with mild burnt sugar in the periphery. Moderate bitterness and better hidden alcohol.

M - Medium body, moderate carbonation. Dry in the finish, with residual hop oils and resins. A bit of warmth after a glass, but nothing excessive.

D - A well-made DIPA that bodes well for 18th Street. It's not my preferred flavor combination, but it's spot-on for the style and will be a big winner with some. Had no problem killing the bomber with a few friends. I'm going to have to check out their Black IPA I guess.

Bottle poured into a FFF Teku

A - Dark copper color that is dark and slightly reflective like copper. Nice frothy white head that settled down to foam on the sides with lacing 4

S- Tropical nose with loads of mango, passion fruit and pineapple. There is also a slight hint of bitterness but not much

T - This is a tropical fruit loaded sweet beer as up front you get loads of mango, pineapple, passion fruit, and strawberry. There is a light pine bitterness that comes through on the backend to cut the sweetness. Light pine lingers in the finish. This is one of the most tropical IIPAs I've had.

MF - Medium body with light carbonation that gives it a nice overall softness. Slight pine resin remains on the tongue in the finish

O - This is a stellar IIPA loaded with tropical fruit. Flavors that give it a nice mango and passion fruit sweetness. This has just enough bitterness to cut the sweetness and give it a nice edge.

22oz bomber poured into a snifter. No bottled on date listed.

A- Pours a nice and clear amber color with a half fingers worth of off white head that quickly fades. Some lacing is apparent along the sides of the glass.

S- The hop aroma shines through in the smell as expected. Smells fruity overall with hints of grapefruit and mango.

T- Nice and hoppy with grapefruit, orange and mango flavors dominating the taste. I also get some resiny pine too. Very nice DIPA.

M- Hoppy, bitter, dry finish, easy drinker for 9%ABV.

My first offering from 18th Street. A job well done, nice DIPA.

Served in a Lagunitas mason jar.

What better beer to follow a bourbon barrel-aged hard root beer than a DIPA, eh? This stuff pours a clear brass topped by a finger of lightly off-cream-white foam. The nose comprises peach, watermelon chewing gum, orange zest, light pine sap, passion fruit, perfume-y flowers, and a strong backbone of alternating honey and caramel. The taste holds notes of orange zest, grapefruit zest, lemon peel, pine resin, sweet caramel, and a touch of apricot skin. The body is a lithe medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a dry finish. Overall, a solid DIPA, one with a smell that I wish I could recreate in my own homebrews. Definitely an auspicious debut for these guys.
