Served in a Lagunitas mason jar.

Man, I need to get back to a casino to lose my money ASAP... Anyway, this stuff pours a rather dark black-sienna topped by over a finger of sandy khaki foam. The nose comprises molasses, pine sap, light roasted malts, mixed greens, and flowers. The hops and the roast alternate fluidly, each allowing the other to govern the next moment, thus allowing for pure marital bliss with no major power trips to fuck things up. The taste brings in more of the same, along with a thick vein of grapefruit that throws the former balance into a bit of an upheaval, only to have things somehow adjust to the new circumstances, even to the point of finishing with a touch of toasted toffee. The body is a light-leaning medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a drying finish. Overall, a very nice black IPA, one that clearly knows the value of balance, even with the scale of flavors being fairly high on both sides.

Bottled poured into FFF Teku,

A - Dark black with an off white head comprised of small bubbles. Leaves some good lacing while going down

S - Pine hops make up the main nose with hints of roasted coffee and slight chocolate,. I get some hints of beef jerky as well

T - Roasted malt, slight burnt caramel / tootsie roll up front. Then in the middle you get the slight bittering hop presence that gives it a slight grapefruit aspect. The finish is light roasty and smoke

M - Medium slightly thick body for the style. Roasted and light astringency in the finish. Leaves a slight residue on the finish

O - Decent black IPA that leaves a bit too much on the smoke for my taste. Reminds me a bit of a hopped up porter with the presence of the smoky / chocolate malt. Curious to see what else 18th has up their sleeve.

Batch 121
(Served in a globe glass)
A- This beer pours a jet black body with a sticky thick tan head that is bubbly on top. There is a few microbubbles that pop out of the abyss.

S- The green herbal aroma is full of hops that blend with some graham malt notes and a slight sweetness in the finish enhances the freshness.

T- The pine woody and dank but bright hops have a slight wintergreen quality to them with a bright green hop flavor lingering without bitterness.

M- The medium mouthfeel has a gentle fizz and no alcohol heat noticed.

O- This beer has a nice dark but bright hop flavor that is not pungent or bittern and some good malt support underneath. Very tasty brew.

Americo's bottle. Great hoppy aroma. Very dark brown with a creamy head. Very roasty, with chocolate malt, and citrus hop finish. A touch of smoke. A story in roast, perhaps too much. All the elements of a good beer, but missing something to make it more drinkable.

Jet black body, coating tan foam in the glass leaving behind sheets of lacing.
Creamy surface texture and lasting retention.

Roasted malt and dark bakers chocolate in the aroma.

Dark chocolate, roasty bitterness, hints of pine and orange peel.
Creamy smooth feel, fairly light bodied with a moderate lingering hop bitterness.
Overall a great ABA, one i'll definitely seek out again. Well rounded and tasty with a nice hoppy punch.

Appearance: Pitch black in the glass. Heavy lacing on the glass as this beer was enjoyed. Thin layer of lacing remained throughout drinking this brew.

Smell: A wonderful balance of hops and dark accents which make this a wonderfully aromatic black IPA. Black licorice, smokey malt, bright hops really make this a stand out aroma. Fuckin A man, this beer smells good.

Taste: The front is a smokey malt darkness. A burnt oak taste lingers for a very long time with the hop presence. The darkness of the hops and the sticky malt is heavy on the palette. heavy, heavy for sure.

Mouthfeel: Balanced, darkness of the malt with a sticky hop presence.

Overall: Chicago seems to be a hot spot for breweries right now. This beer can go toe to toe with any other black IPA on the market.

Thanks to GRG1313 for sharing this one at his tasting.

Batch # 3.

Pours a clear dark brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, citrus zest, and tropical fruit aromas. Taste is much the same with citrus and tropical fruit flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is more focused on the hop aspects versus the roasty malt.
