750 ml bottle (1 pint 9.4 fl oz.), with no apparent bottled on date present. The local beer store just got these in stock, so I'm going to assume it's fresh. Snagged the second to last bottle. They also tell me that this beer is named after the brewer's daughter. My first beer from 18th Street Brewery, brewed and bottled at Pipeworks Brewing, out of Chicago. Expectations are decently high based on this knowledge.
Poured into a clear balloon snifter glass.
A - Pours two fingers of sudsy white head on top of a nice dark burnt orange colored body with some brownish highlights when held to the light. Head dies down to a thin white ring around the edges of the glass.
S - Smell is nice: sour bread dough, Belgian yeast, fruity pineapple presence from the yeast, some floral hibiscus, and spicy cloves. Reminds me of that cheesy burned tortilla type smell, but it's probably from the yeast also.
T - Taste brings more of the same, but I feel as if it falls a bit short on the finish. Belgian yeast, hint of funk, fruity pineapple, and cloves. Not really pulling out any distinct 'blood orange' flavor but citrus fruit is apparent. Definitely a subtle sour "cheesy" taste in the finish; I feel like this beer would pair well with some cheese and I wish I had some.
M - Feel is good, although it feels a bit too moist to be a saison. A bit too smooth and creamy, and not as dry or heavily carbonated as your typical saison / farmhouse ale. Either way, it suits me just fine.
Overall, I am quite enjoying this. It reminds me more of a stronger Belgian ale than it does a typical saison, but I like what they did here. Smooth & creamy, 7.00% abv is well hidden, medium bodied with ideal carbonation. Recommended even if you aren't the biggest fan of the style.
