Collaboration with Samuel Adams
Oats McGoats is our collaboration brew with Samuel Adams! It’s our Rye Stout with the addition of oat malt and Golden Naked Oats, which lends a smokey earthy quality to this brew. We also used a new hop (#7270) that still awaits naming. This hop lends a subtle wintergreen aroma over the roasty malt bill.

Poured from 12-ounce bottle into a stemless wine glass. Lovely appearance, with a deep blackish-brown body and a thick, light tan head that left a sheet of lacing as it settled to a thin cap. At cellar temperature, this one really hits its stride. Aromas and flavors of dark roasted malt and dried fruit, with hints of coffee and dark chocolate, a little smoky char, and a bit of peppery spice. Creamy, silky mouthfeel, with some good carbonation and a dry and astringent finish. The lingering bitterness (45 IBU) adds a pleasant dimension. This is a very good and complex beer, and I say "Well done, chaps!"

A: Pours a pitch black color with 2 fingers of head that fades down to a thin cap that leaves good lacing
S: Roasted malt, dark chocolate, and some coffee. Not much else
T: Follows the nose. Starts off with the roasted malt and dark chocolate and then goes into some very light coffee and dark fruit notes. Bitterness from the roast come through to balance any sweetness. Finishes with lingering roast
M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. On the smoother side thanks to the oats
O: A solid oatmeal stout that is very easy to drink. Nothing too special, as it is definitely just a straight-up stout, but good nonetheless

This was a pretty good oatmeal stout, but not the best I've had. I bet that it made a good base for some of their experimental beers and in fact I was able to try one of those as well (with vanilla added in that case). A bit light for my liking, not too much of a strong stout flavor, but you can tell it's in there. I wonder how much the rye changed this beer compared to whatever stouts they have made before, though I'm certainly not against it.
