The brewery describes this one as a Baltic Porter aged in Chambourcin barrels from Alto Vineyards (a local Southern Illinois winery).
Formidable in appearance, Scratch's Baltic Porter is a dark "black" coffee, high SRM, brown (with just minor hints of dark reds/maroons in the sunlight). A decent 1/2" khaki-colored head adorns my goblet but quickly settles to a persistent skimming of tan bubbles. Served a bit warm, the nose is muted but malty sweetness is soon followed by light toasted oak and cherry-esque fruitiness.
Personal preference dictates that this beer should be a bit more full-bodied and complex. At 6.0% the mouthfeel is a bit watery for the style and a lack of complexities such as dark fruits melded with nuttiness, toffee, etc is a small letdown. The clean and smooth nature of this brew make it very drinkable and the flavor that is going on, simple as it may be, is quite nice: malt, muted cherries, light oak, light toast, dash of hoppy spice, good dryness... Not bad... But I want a ballsy Baltic Porter!
Overall, a decent beer from a fledgling local brewery that consistently puts out good beers. Definitely keep your eye out on Scratch. Only good can come from these offerings.
