April 5th, 2016 - The nose on this beautifully capped Milk Stout is nice, with a smoothness that is inviting, and a rich chocolate taste like chocolate sprinkles busting on your teeth, with a slight root vegetable mellowness (think of a roasted sweet potato.) The flavor is far more interesting though, with both a slight sweet and slight tang, and a dryness that I would not have expected from the nose. The palate is smooth from that nitro treatment, and let's some S'mores flavors appear at the aftertaste before evaporating.

On nitro tap at the brewery in Solano Beach.
Pours opaque black with a creamy, durable tan head that leaves decent lacing.
Aroma: excellent aroma mixes dark roasted grains, coffee and dark chocolate.
Flavor: good, but not up with the aroma or their fine coffee stout. Lingering dark roasted grain taste with light smoke and faint burnt elements. Rather bitter and dry for "milk stout" style.
Feel: Smooth, medium body; medium carbonation.

This is not a milk stout. This is an Irish dry stout. It is very bitter and heavy on roasted flavor; not sweet at all.
Here is a description of the style:
Milk / Sweet Stouts are basically stouts that have a larger amount of residual dextrins and unfermented sugars that give the brew more body and a sweetness that counters the roasted character. Milk Stouts are very similar to Sweet Stouts, but brewers add unfermentable sugars, usually lactose, to the brew kettle to add body and some sweetness.
If you aren't going to make it sweet, don't call it "milk stout."

Black brew in the tall tulip. Lovely creamy head and a smooth mouthfeel. Less sweet than most milk stouts. It's just the right balance of grainy and creamy, malty and scorched. Not very bitter, yet perfectly beery. IBUs rated at 32. Hops are Perle and Saaz.
This just seems like the way a milk stout should be. Less sugar and more cream. Dark malt taste with a chocolatey hint and a chalky texture. A hint of fruity red wine. Stupendous quaff. On tap at the brewpub in Solana Beach.
