The Pour: Jet black, not much light penetrating this beer. Head is dark brown/tan and thick and creamy. Retention is excellent and lacing is decent.

The Nose: Lots of dark fruit and heavily roasted malt. A bit astringent. A little salty. Old coffee, toffee, smoke and dark chocolate. A bit of brown sugar and cocoa powder. Smells like an IRS.

The Taste: A bit thin bodywise. At 8.50% the alcohol is not noticeable at all. Definitely dominated by the roasty smoky malts. Flavour is a little bittersweet, a little salty, a hint of sweet toffee. A bit bready as well. A little spice in there. It's quite light on the palate, and the carbonation is low. As it warms the alcohol becomes more noticeable and I can detect some warming on the back of my throat. Finish is a lingering roasted bitterness.

The Verdict: Quite impressed actually. Finding something other than a light-bodied dark lager has proven difficult but it seems there is an underground culture of beer geeks in existence in Prague. The flavours in this beer were spot on for the style and was surprisingly easy to drink. Hopefully this is a small preview of things to come here in a beer culture dominated by light beers, cheers!

Got this from a friend who lives in Prague. Thick, pitch black pour with a two finger crazy dark caramel-colored head with great retention and lacing. The nose is big and roasty with a good amount of smoke along with hints of dark chocolate, toffee, caramel, cocoa, and subtle dark fruits. The taste rich and roasty with big dark chocolate notes, espresso, cocoa, vanilla, molasses, and subtle smoke. The mouthfeel is super thick and creamy with light carbonation and a dry, mouth-coating finish. Overall, this was a solid, tasty RIS with great drinkability. Thanks Micah!

From a 330ml into a snifter.

A: Pours black, with thin a dark tan, creamy, head. OKhead retention. Nott much lacing. No visible activity.
S: Dark chocolate and roasty malt up front, followed by dark fruits (plums) and coffee. There is a deep smokiness towards the end. The smoke is quite heavy and lingers.
T: Roasty and malty; coffee notes and smokiness. The smokiness lingers, like in the nose. Heavy on the bitterness towards the end, for the style imo.
M: Full bodied, thick, but not as thick as it could be. Drinks smooth. Leaves a bit of chew. Carbonation is light. Slightly warming.

Overall: Very nice; I very much liked the approach of this beer. Was not expecting it to be so smoky, which was a very pleasant surprise. Nice complexity going on, while checking all the boxes for the style. I wasn't sure what to expect and very much enjoyed what it proved to be.
