From a brewery who skillfully named themselves "Mad Tree", their barrel-aged stout should come at no surprise. With the label fable in mind, the obsession with oak and the whimsical stories that it tells, the beer that slumbered inside those barrels have a tall task in standing up to those lofty ideology.

But black to its core, Axis Mundi pours with a lavish creaminess that soon enough separates its heady mocha-whipped froth from its ominously dark body beneath. Above it all swirls a savory and robust scent that charmingly strikes with nose with walnut brownie, heavy cream, chocohlate and Kahlua. That booze soaked latte aroma translates to an initial taste that's soaked with burnt caramel, molasses and char.

Espresso-rich in taste, the overtone of coffee is strong through the middle while bitter baker's chocolate, burnt toast, roasting walnut, and a light campfire tinge decorate the periphery of taste. As the strong boubony warmth builds, it brings about the warm esters of cherry and licorice before a heavy booze dosing of whisky-soaked oak, vanilla, caramel and char.

Certainly full, but far from chewy- the beer's lavish roasty sweetness resonates somewhat drinkable and less weighted which makes it quite a dangerous option. As it finishes with a strong coffee-like bitterness yet chalky, its aftertaste is awash with bitter chocolate and obvious bourbon.
