A: The beer is hazy dark yellowish amber in color—too hazy to see if there is any visible carbonation. It poured with a short white head that quickly died down, leaving some lacing on the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of piney and herbal hops are present in the nose along with underlying notes of caramel malts.
T: The taste is similar to the smell, except the underlying flavors of caramel malts are bit stronger, particularly as the beer warms up.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a little crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This is an average IPA—it reminds me a lot like the early IPAs of the mid-2000s at the beginning of the craft beer movement as there is nothing overly special about the smell or taste of the hops.

St. Florian's Flashover IPA

22oz Bottle with my FW Snifter glass
Noted on 06/19/2014

A: Dark caramel amber color with some considerable hop haze. Thick finger width of ecru cream holds thick and soapy up top. Nice cascade of sticky lace coating the glass all the way down. Looks pleasant and inviting.

S: Bready malt nose filled with gobs of warm toasty malts. Grassy hops with pine and citrus coming together underneath. A touch of stingy booze emits as the other aromas fade. Some florals there but definitely not shy on the malts.

T: Tastes brings forth a robust maltiness with lots of warm bready biscuit flavors and some dark caramel sweetness to it. Citrus and pine hops mingle with a bit of herbal spice. Still manages a very light and frothy experience with a modest bitterness and a good drying finish. Its malt forward yet delicately balanced in that way. Alcohol is better disguised here. Not bad but nothing too spectacular either.

M: Moderate to lighter feel on account of the frothy carbonation. Medium levels of bitterness midway leading up to a nice drying finish. Slightly resinous but mostly clean on the palate.

D: Not your typical West Coast as this one sets out to be more of a PNW style IPA if you will. Forward with lots of toasty malt and biscuit complimented by some common American hops. Not my usual preference but what is nice here is the balance and drinkability. Cool to try this up and comer but probably not something I would go out for again.
