Poured from a waxed 750 ml bottle into a Surly Darkness chalice.

Appearance: Pours a deep dark brownish black with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid three fingers of light tan head that recede into a thin creamy layer. Leaves a lot of creamy lacing around the glass.

Smell: A dark and fairly sweet yeast driven aroma with hints of spice and lots of chocolate. Upfront hefeweizen yeast along with wheat and hints of grains and biscuit. Spice hints of clove and pepper. Big scent of bananas along with hints of bubblegum, dried apple, and pear. Dark roast hints with some chocolate cacao nibs and slight coffee. Hops are very laid back. A pretty interesting and nice aroma.

Taste: Like the aroma hints at, a yeast driven taste with lots of banana and dark chocolate notes. Lots of hefeweizen yeast upfront with some notes of wheat, biscuit, and grains. Spicy notes of clove and pepper. Lots of banana taste along with some notes of dried apple, pear, and bubblegum. Dark roast notes with a nice dose of cacao nibs along with a slight taste of coffee. Not many hops to speak of. A pretty nice yeasty taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy, yeasty, and pretty smooth.

Overall: A pretty interesting and decent spin on a Dunkel. Good yeast and clove presence. Chocolate isn't as strong as expected but it does add a nice little kick.

Bad Weather Schoko-Weizen Dunkelweizen with cocoa nibs. Storm cellar series #1. Brewed and bottled by Bad Weather Brewing Company, Minnetonka, MN. ABV 7.0% ABV.

Total blackness, under a full, 1/2 inch creamy tan, looking good from where I sit.

Aroma: chocolate and dark fruit notes come through first, spices, banana a little bit. Creamy, milky-ness, too…lactose in this? there's more than the straightforward dunkel weisse aromatics here. Something different is going on, an unusual yeast strain, maybe?

Taste: Chocolate hits the palate first, followed quickly by the weizen yeast character. There's banana, and spice, clove. Medium-bodied, full-flavored, and fairly unique. Plays rich on the tongue for a while, and ends on the dry side, with a lingering chocolate-y finish.

I'd like to see what they tell us on the label: "Schoko-weizen kicks off our limited edition Storm Cellar Series. We use classic Hefeweizen yeast to give this brew rich banana and clove flavors, with notes of toasted bread from the dark wheat. Schokolade is the German word for chocolate, so cacao nibs are added to give SCHOLO-WEIZEN it's rich, chocolately finish. A fitting style of beer to launch this limited series, Dunkelweizen was the first style of beer co-founder Joe ever brewed. Enjoy this one of a kind beer while it lasts…Prost!"

If this wasn't supposed to be so la-de-da, if it wasn't wax-dipped, in a big bottle, with a price tag of $9 or so, maybe I wouldn't be disappointed. It just doesn't deliver enough. Nothing wrong with it, nothing bad, just not good enough.

Appearance: Dark brown, huge head.

Smell: Big banana aroma, yum!

Taste: Bananas, dark chocolate, and a hint of coffee. Good stuff.

Overall: I've had Bad Weather at the bar, so was glad to see them in bottles--and a dunkelweizen to boot! It's tasty, with a good mix of chocolate and banana flavors. I'd rate this just a little lower than El Hefe Negro from Surly--I haven't rated that one due to it being tap only.

I was excited to see this come through the store I work at, hadn't heard about this one before I cracked the case open, I really like the other bad weather beers I've tried though.

A: very dark brown, almost black with a thick khaki colored head, that dissipates at a medium rate.
S: I get quite a bit of clove, mild ripe banana as the beer warms the banana aroma comes to the front more with some other ripened fruit esters. I also get that odd metallic/ aluminum aroma that weizen beers and some yeasty belguim beers have. Not getting much of any cocoa or chocolate aromas.
T: The clove is pretty strong in this beer which is unfortunate for me because i'm not a fan. The banana and chocolate are very faint and that metallic taste is definitely there in the aftertaste. Pretty disappointed with this one, I probably over-hyped it up in my head.
M: Low/high to medium/low carbonation, pretty light body.
overall: i'm gonna try hard to finish this glass, unfortunately my wife doesn't like it either which leaves a whole glass for the drain... sorry bad weather :(

Storm Cellar Series #1 comes in a 750ml wax dipped bottle. Fancy packaging for a dunkelweizen. Good thing it was waxed because the bottle cap was loose. So if you bought a bottle think about opening it soon. Dunkelweizen with cacao nibs. They also spelled it Celler instead of Cellar on the bottle.

Pours a very dark brown with a massive head that had good retention. No loss of carbonation due to the bottling issue. The head settles to a thick cap with some spotty lacing being left down the glass. Does not appear to have any lees in the bottle. Is this filtered?

Pleasant yeast and wheat aroma. I get more cloves but banana is also there. Mild chocolate aroma that really compliments the yeast smell. Smells very inviting.

Surprised by how mild the flavor was. Get a lot more chocolate in the flavor than what the aroma led me to believe. It overpowers the dunkel flavor in fact. Notes of banana and cloves but I miss the wheat flavor. A little bit of metallic flavor in the finish. Overall it has good flavor.

The body is where this beer suffers. Feels very under carbonated as it seems to have lost most of its life during the pour. As a result this beer feels much thinner than a 7% ABV beer.

Not an entirely successful beer. Interesting mix of aromas and flavors, but could be executed better. Also some QC issues would make purchasing a bottle in the future questionable especially at the asking price.
