Pours with an enormous tan head and little body. Reddish amber body, but I've seen IPA's this color.
NIce aroma. Fresh hops. NIce mix of citrus west coast, but also a blending of something a little more earthy - maybe it's a bit of grain with a toasty quality. Soft malt in background.
Flavor is more blended in approach with a solid hop presence but also holding a well heeled malt character. Strong, firm and tasty bitterness on the finish.
Soft and fully moderate body.
Solid. Very solid.
thanks Chuck

Brilliant garnet, hoppy nose balanced by rich malts. Citrus and pine. Big malt support.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tall pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a deep and fairly hazy amber red with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid three fingers of off white head with decent retention. Leaves a lot of creamy lacing around the glass.

Smell: A toasty and earthy hoppy red ale aroma with good hints of caramel and citrus. Earthy and floral hops upfront with hints of grass and spicy pine resin. Citrus hop hints of orange peel, grapefruit, and lemon. Toasted malts with bready hints of biscuit, sweet caramel, toffee, toasted bread, grains, and yeast. A nicely wet and earthy red aroma with good balance.

Taste: Like it smells, a nicely sharp mix of earthy hop notes with a good balance of toasty malts. Earthy, floral, and herbal hop notes with some wet grass and dank spicy pine resin. Juicy citrus hop notes of orange peel, lemon zest, and grapefruit. Bready toasted malt presence with notes of sweet caramel, toffee, biscuit, grains, toasted bread, yeast, and cracker. A pretty solid taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Nicely sharp and juicy. Somewhat oily. Finishes pretty dry.

Overall: A pretty impressive Red Ale from this new brewery. Good sharp and juicy hop presence with a solid caramel malt backing.

Picked up a single at Princeton's Liquor. I also tried the FireFly rye ale and it was nice, but this is a treat. It's damn hard to find—and, I assume, brew—a beer that's not too thick, has a good kick of crisp hops and flavorful (and interesting!) malt backbone. Oh, and unlike so many big red ales, this isn't too thick or sweet. The aroma has a thick spicy dough with orange rind and grapefruit. That citrus builds in the taste, along with toffee and toasted barley notes. This is a really well built beer. I typically find red ales to be one of the most boring styles brewed, but this is drinkable, a little different, and complex. I'd buy a 6er.

Had this on-tap and was really impressed. Now will review from a bottled example. Pours a dark reddish amber color with just over one finger of head that had good retention before settling to a thick cap. Moderate amount of sticky lacing is left down the glass.

This is a hoppy red ale and is displayed in the aroma. Citrus and tropical fruit and maybe a little pine. Despite the strong hop aroma, the malt is also showcased. Caramel and toffee undertones and I detect a slight hint of cocoa.

This is one of the best red ales out there right now. Strong flavors of citrus and resinous hop qualities. Plenty of malt to compliment the hops. Not too much caramel thankfully but notes of toffee and rye bread. Adds some nice sweetness but this is high on the bitterness scale. FInishes with a bitter flavor.

Medium body and perfectly carbonated. Not harsh but enough action in the carbonation to give life and spirit to the palate. Been impressed with this attribute in this beer compared to their Firefly.

Just as impressive from the bottle as it was the first time I had it on-tap. A truly impressive Minnesota beer.

On tap into pint glass.

A. Dark amber. Little transparency. One finger of white head that dissipates quickly.

S. Heavy malt aroma. Carmel. Hint of wet grass.

T. Roasted malt initially gives way to sweetness. Slight hoppy flavor, but bitter aftertaste that lingers.

M. Medium. Fizzy. Clean smooth finish, but that aftertaste...

O. Quality brew. Well put together. Usually I find red ales to be either too sweet or too bitter, but Windvane has a good balance between sweet/bitter and/or malt/hops. Very impressed. Good brew from a newer brewery.

Amber red beer with a heavy creamy khaki head leaving thick lace. Smell is pine and rye, dark caramel, and a hint of earth. Taste is lightly pine resin hop light bitterness with earthy rye spice character. Some caramel and biscuit malt build in later. Medium light mouthfeel is a bit watery. Slightly hop forward no sweetness easy enough to tip back and drain.
